Compact and simple in design, the $50 Follow Focus from Hondo Garage lets you achieve smooth focus pulls with any lens that sports a cinema standard 0.8 MOD gear. Secure the follow focus to a standard 15mm rod and position it so the gear interlocks with your lens; all that's left to do is move the lever to control focus. Photography lenses without integrated gears can use separately available lens gears to take advantage of the smoothness of the follow focus. The unified design of the unit precludes the need for a gear box, eliminating the rotational play found in many traditional follow focuses. Teflon thrust washers ensure that the focusing action is damped, and the friction is user-adjustable. Repeatable focus pulls can be easily achieved by marking your focus end-points using a separately available white grease pencil.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for small diameter lenses with loose focus rings only I bought one of these direct from the manufacturer shortly after the kickstarter campaign given it seemed a genius design. My unit arrived fast, and I was happy to see it was well built, but a few quick tests showed it was really only meant for a handful of lenses in my kit, namely smaller diameter lenses and those with pretty loose focus rings. It's worked at treat with old takumar lenses etc, but my larger Sigma primes give too much resistance and it just dislodges from the 15mm rods. No amount of tension was enough to keep it locked in place when trying to focus anything with a bit of resistance in its focus throw. The 15mm mount needs to be gnurled on the inside for added grip. But, if you're using small M4/3 lenses, this might be a great solution for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great with the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8G ED I use this $50 follow focus not as a proper follow focus but to increase the throw of my NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens zoom lens. The device does three things for me. 1) By increasing the focus throw it enables me to manually focus with greater precision. 2) Because my hands touch the follow focus rather than the lens barrel, I don’t shake the camera. 3) I no longer confuse the zoom ring with the focus ring. A bonus is that the gears are a perfect fit for my lens, no installation of specialized gears is necessary. There is no backlash/play between the follow focus gear and the focus ring. For $50 I couldn’t ask for more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very well built, but a little stiff This product is very well made, and I only have two bad things about it, one of which is just personal preference. The first is that I feel it is a bit stiff, requiring quite a bit of force to move it. This does not mean it isn't smooth, however, as it is very, very smooth, I'd just prefer for it to be less "tight". The only complaint about use is that to "lock" and "unlock" the focus gear so you can move the handle freely, you have to unscrew it and this can cause it to shake the camera platform. It is also fairly squeaky so doing so without external mics will show up in the audio. Other than that, for the price this product is superb. It works well and feels like quality. I definitely recommend it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would by this for every camera I use. You can't beat it for a well built, simple follow focus. No fumbling - the lever is easy to find. Meshes with all of my lenses without issue. For one-man-bands this is an essential.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great alternative to the common follow focus Still waiting on cage and rails to put it to use but for built quality only this gets an A+. It's a solid piece of gear, completely made out of metal... will last forever. Tension can be adjusted to taste. Will probably buy a second one for aperture or ND filter control. Impressed!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Big flaw You have to stretch the belt to have some tension to work it, but you just use it once and the tension loosens and the product stops working. You have to readjust every time it is used, besides the movement is not smooth at all.
