    G-Technology G1 reviews

    8TB G-DRIVE USB G1 USB 3.0 Hard Drive is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Storage Drive for the price, but... I was in need of a quality back-up drive for my endless photography files. B&H actually offered me a lower price than listed in the catalog. Once it arrived I found out why. This drive is advertised with an 8TB storage capacity, but don't be fooled, as I was. The capacity of this drive is only 7.38TB, fully formatted with no software loaded. G Tech is a quality company and they produce excellent products and I expected more from them. Unfortunately, I was disappointed at the drive's actual capacity. I expected it to be much closer to the 8TB as advertised, 7.89TB would have been more like it. I gave it only 4 stars for that reason alone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great editing drive for smaller projects. I run a small documentary studio and we generally work off of RAIDs via Thunderbolt. Sometimes, we have small projects that can easily be cut on a MacBook Pro via USB 3, and this 8TB drive fits the bill. We use these drives for their large capacity and edit in FCPX at up to 2K resolution in ProRes without a hiccup. At 7200rpm, we are getting write speeds of around 190 mb/sec. We then use a less expensive 8TB drive (from another brand) to backup our G-DRIVE every evening using Carbon Copy Cloner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I always use G-Drives As a professional photographer, I need huge amounts of storage space, and I've always used and trusted G-Drives. I've got more than a dozen and they've never failed me. Fast, reliable storage at a very good price. The 6TB drive is actually cheaper per TB, so I'd recommend buying that one (it's more than enough space for most anything), but the project I was on was enormous, so I went with the 8, and love it. (PS, don't forget to buy back-ups! You've gotta have all your work on at least two separate drives!)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not reliable This drive would disconnect from my PC intermittently while transferring files. Sometimes it would reconnect after a few seconds. Sometimes I have to power off/on the drive to reconnect. Tried switching to other USB ports and USB cable. But does not fix problem. The less expensive drive that I brought as a backup for this drive was rock solid. Very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesom If you use a Mac, I wouldn't recommend any other external hard drive. G drives have always been the best for Apple, while others have to be formatted specifically for your computer, and may not read on other macs after that format. Plus others fail with no rhyme or reason (like Seagate), while G drive have yet to disappoint.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lifespan 14 months Failed after just over a year from putting it in service. This was my primary work drive holding all my photo library. Thank the Lord for backups. All hard drives fail eventually but I expect more than a year of service. G-Tech came highly recommended. Live and learn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must buy! I purchased this for storing large amounts of footage as well as working off of it for editing and color grading. Excellent drive, small and sleek in size. I have many TB sizes in this style and they are work horses. For the price, you can't beat it.
