G-Technology 0G05012 overview

  • 1Description

Add the speed and storage capabilities of RAID, Thunderbolt 2, and USB 3.0 to your Mac and Windows systems using the G-RAID 20TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array from G-Technology. This array features two SATA III 6 Gb/s drive bays, each of which holds one removable 10TB enterprise-class hard drive, for a total capacity of 20TB. The drives have a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and are configured in a RAID 0 array. Moreover, this G-RAID is outfitted with one USB 3.0 port along with two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which deliver daisy-chaining capabilities.

This G-RAID features an internal RAID controller which supports hardware RAID 0 (optimized for performance), RAID 1 (optimized for 1:1 data redundancy), or JBOD, with data transfer rates of up to 480 MB/s. This will allow users to access, browse, edit, and backup their digital library. It is well suited for demanding creative projects, such as those involving HD, 2K, and compressed 4K workflows. In addition, it may also be used for storage-intensive applications, such as audio editing, digital photography, music libraries, data backup, and more. This array uses a smart cooling fan to help ensure quiet operation, a long life, and data reliability, as well as an all-aluminum enclosure to help increase its durability.

While this G-RAID is compatible with both Mac and Windows, it comes pre-formatted HFS+ with Journaling for Mac OS 10.9 and later. It may also be reformatted for Windows and is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Included with this storage array are two Thunderbolt cables, a USB 3.0 cable, a power cable, and an AC power adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

    G-RAID 20TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (2 x 10TB) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Expensive but worth having RAID1 Using this as a file server disk and it was easy to switch the drive to RAID1 so the information is on both disks (though that lowers the capacity to 10TB). Really the only negative is that the drive has some vibration so if you put it on certain surfaces, it willl rattle. I also had two old G-drive 4 and 5TB FW800 drives and was able to daisy chain one of them to this drive. I used a Thunderbolt to FW800 connector. That drive is slow with FW800 but it is functional. Tried to do time machine backups of the 10TB drive on the 4 and 5TB externals and though it does work, it takes a couple of days to do a backup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As fast as SSD's I purchased this raid to serve as a working edit drive with projects that are above 1TB. I have other backup strategies, but I wanted something similar in speeds to my 1TB SSD's that I use for working edits. This thing read/writes at or around 500MB/s! Since this raid is made up of helium drives, they are a little louder than normal drives in the other enclosures. It just has a sound like it's writing data every few seconds, but it's not as loud as raids with loud fans.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High capacity and fast I've been using $T and 8 T G-Raids for a few years, one as a primary disk for photo work and one as back ip. Have worked well, but I need more storage. I also wanted something that while not usable in portable mode, was easy to transport. This to have two backup disks that I rotate offsite. This was the only one I could find that met all those needs and was 20T. So far all working very well.
