  • 1Description

The DiskStation DS416play 4-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is a high-performance 4-bay NAS storage and application server built for home users and creative professionals who want to store large collections of photos and videos in one place. It is equipped with four drive bays that are capable of supporting 3.5" SATA III (6 Gb/s) and SATA II (3 Gb/s) hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA III (6 Gb/s) and SATA II (3 Gb/s) hard drives and SSDs. Using its four drive bays, this NAS will allow you to store and share a large number of files, including videos, music, photos, and documents with up to 2,048 user accounts and 256 maximum concurrent connections.

The DS416play runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron N3060 Dual-Core (64-bit) with a burst speed of up to 2.48 GHz and its 1GB of DDR3 RAM allows frequently-used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving read speeds of over 225 MB/s and write speeds of over 186 MB/s, as well as encrypted read speeds of 224 MB/s and encrypted write speeds of 142 MB/s. It features three USB 3.0 ports which allows it to be connected to your Windows, Mac, or Linux system. Network connectivity is achieved via its two integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports, which are equipped with link aggregation and failover support. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications.

For those who require RAID support, the DS416play supports RAID 0 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

    Synology DS416play reviews

DiskStation DS416play 4-Bay NAS Enclosure is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Thought-Out OS, Excellent Manufacturer Support I bought this mainly to house large archives of image files, but also appreciate the ability to stream video and audio files wherever I am, as well as give friends access to my media library. Physical installation of the drives and connections took about five minutes, there is an easy setup wizard that guides you through the process of setting up the OS, and Synology support has been fabulous with virtually zero hold time when I need to ask questions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Synology NAS DS416play meets my needs Using for storage of; data exceeding computers internal capacity, periodic backups, files accessed across computers via network and videos accessed by smart tv. Like knowing storage system has tolerance for single drive failure. Currently have 2 WD Red 4TB installed using Synology SHR. Have 2 more 4TB on order and will change to SHR-2 scheme to accommodate 2 drive failure. Will use WD 8TB USB drive to backup NAS. While hurricane Harvey was a wake up call, I live in FL and Irma reinforced the need for convenient means to store and backup that storage. Had no prior experience with NAS. Setup was very easy. NAS interfaces with UPS. Still learning about additional capabilities. Synology website has excellent documentation and useful community forum.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME! I purchased the Synology 416Play to replace my aging Synology 411j. The performance improvement is nigh and day difference. Files transfer to/from the 416Play are only limited in speed by my gigabit network speed. All of the apps load very quickly and work great. I use the Synology system as a video server at home, but also for a web and photo repository that I share with family and friends. It works great both when at home on the local network, but also when away from home. The mobile apps make it easy to move photos and videos from my phone to the 416Play anywhere I am. The 416Play also looks great compared and a front USB port making it easy to copy files to/from thumb drives and my LaCie rugged drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Setting up a NAS could not be easier! I purchased the Synology DS416play because I wanted to setup a Plex server in my home. I figured a 4-bay would give me enough room to expand, without being too big. The box is pretty slick looking and the design is geared towards ease of use and overall simplicity. I ordered two 4Tb Western Digital Red drives and the installation was a dream. I have installed more hard drives than I care to remember over the last 20 years and it has never been so simple. Setup of the software took a few minutes to download updates, etc. but Synology's software was very clear and relatively intuitive. Getting my drives mirrored and accessible was straight forward. Hooking it up with Plex was also really easy. I haven't used the Synology media server software, but have no doubt it will be a solid user experience. I am really happy with my purchase and would highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Synology is the best. I've used a 2-bay model (DS212j) for 4 years now. I'm still amazed how much it can do. From syslog server to OpenVPN sevrer, from an email server to RADIUS. It is simply amazing what you get in one neat package. It is one of the very few things that I bought and liked more after using for a while than before I bought it. It was getting a bit slow and low on space, so I decided to get another Synology NAS (is there any other kind :). This one is much faster, I have more space for another two drives, but overall, it is still one amazing machine!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first NAS needed to be a good choice I have had many Mac and PC computers over the last 35 years. Often I was left wanting to have some services available 24/7. Network Accessible Storage (NAS) was the answer. After much research and speaking to friends who had more experience in this area, I settled on the Synology DS416play. It's not the most basic model the offer, nor is it the top of the line. However, for the price, it's a great entry point for price/functionality to learn from going forward. I suspect at some point this unit will become a backup for a larger Synology NAS in the future. The web based interface & apps work pretty much the same on Mac or PC, and most have a gently sloped learning curve. The unit is very quiet with WD RED 5400rpm NAS drives (4x4TB), and in my home's hall closet it usually runs about 35??C. All of my computers can now use it for TimeMachine backups, and all of our music and video are stored on it. Rebuilding a drive after removal takes about 40 hours in my experience with 3.5TB of data (I successively upgraded 2 older, smaller ones after my initial setup). Overall, I am very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would purchase this product again. In fact I am. Synology is technology you can LOVE. For something that could be very complex, it was a dream to set up. I use mine for video and photo storage. It is fast. It is quiet. It is efficient. Should any one of the 4 discs fail, I can hot swap replace and continue to access my stored files while the new drive is introduced to the 'pack'. Just buy it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would be this again. So far so good. I upgraded from the 410j to the 416play because the older NAS was to old. The newer ds416play with the beefier processor and memory has been great. I have not seen the indexing that the older one had. The CPU seldom goes above 70% when working hard. Has been always accessible. The old one at times would not be accessible for days.
