Metabones 0.71x overview

  • 1Description

The Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Contax/Yashica-Mount Lens to Micro Four Thirds-Mount Camera from Metabones allows a Contax/Yashica-mount lens to be mounted onto a Micro Four Thirds-mount camera. While doing so, the adapter's optics help to maximize the connected lens's apparent angle of view while providing a 1-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range.

If a lens intended for 35mm film or similarly-sized full-frame camera sensors is connected to a camera with a Micro Four Thirds-sized sensor, it would project an image larger than the Micro Four Thirds sensor was built to accept. Able to capture only the center portion of the projected image, the effective angle of view of the lens would be narrowed, creating an in-camera "crop factor." The Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Contax/Yashica-Mount Lens to Micro Four Thirds-Mount Camera condenses the light from a lens designed for 35mm film or "full frame" camera sensors and projects it onto a Micro Four Thirds sensor. This allows a Micro Four Thirds sensor to utilize more of the light gathered by a connected lens, which effectively reduces the crop factor while making available to the sensor an additional 1 stop of light for each of the lens's f/stop settings.

This adapter is constructed from aluminum alloy for durability while minimizing weight and its mounting rings are made with brass to further prevent wear-and-tear. Inside are five lens elements in four groups that are designed to provide optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and a detachable tripod foot is included that features 1/4"-20 threads as well as compatibility with Arca-Swiss tripod heads.

The Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Contax/Yashica-Mount Lens to Micro Four Thirds-Mount Camera does not support electronic communication between an attached camera and lens. To help determine the amount of light that enters a Micro Four Thirds-mount camera when using this adapter and a Contax/Yashica-mount lens, users should use the aperture ring found on the lens.

  • Allows a full-frame Contax-Yashica-mount lens to be used with a Micro Four Thirds-mount camera
  • Maximizes apparent angle of view of combined camera and lens
  • Provides a 1-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range
  • Five lens elements in four groups for optical clarity as well as color fidelity
  • Internal coating minimizes reflections within the adapter barrel
  • Detachable, Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot with 3/8" threads
  • Aluminum alloy components for weight reduction
  • Brass mounting rings prevent wear-and-tear
  • Locking mechanism for secure attachment of lens with push-button release

    Metabones 0.71x reviews

Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Contax/Yashica-Mount Lens to Micro Four Thirds-Mount Camera is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Option for C/Y Glass (with explanation of other option) I have been using this in combination with a GH4 and vintage Contax Zeiss lenses. I tried a couple other adapters from fotodiox, but felt they were too bulky. Plus I wanted the better crop factor the MB offers. Everything works exactly as advertised I really feel like new life was breathed into my GH4, being able to easily use these fantastic old lenses, while taking advantage of most of their full frame format, along with a slight boost of low-light capabilities. The one thing I find disappointing is that the fit is not as tight on the lens side as I'd expect. Lenses fit on my EF to M4/3 Metabones Speedbooster nice and snug, but on this speedbooster the C/Y side wiggles a tiny bit when adjusting the focus and aperture rings. I think it's something most people can deal with but it's something to be mindful of if you're a perfectionist or simply love the tactile feel of absolute smoothness when turning the rings on your lenses.... because this will certainly interrupt that joy. If you are of the latter ilk, this hack is something to consider: Leitax adapters will convert your Contax Zeiss lenses into EF mounts (you'll have to find them outside of BHPhoto).I have a few and they are solid, well-machined objects of beauty. The adapter ring is secured to the lens using existing screw holes, so there is absolutely no wiggle. Now, the connection to an EF metabones speedbooster is extremely solid, however, the metal of the Leitax mount will touch the electronic sensor on the speedbooster, causing the body to think the lens is improperly attached (since there is nothing electronic to recognize in these old vintage lenses), resulting in a blank screen and error message. To get around this, put a piece of clear tape on the adapter ring where the chip would normally touch the metal. It sounds primitive, but it works. This leaves one issue, which is the lever that sticks out of the Contax Zeiss lenses. These are not needed when using the lenses on digital cameras, and if you are willing to, you can file them down (I have not done this, but was advised a fraction of a millimeter or so would do the trick). This will prevent the lever from making contact with the glass on the speedbooster. Now, I tried the Leitax to EF Speedbooster route, minus the filing down of the lenses, and the 50mm fit just fine on the EF speedbooster without the lever making any contact on the speedbooster's glass. However, I have heard other lenses with more protruding levers (like the 28mm) will possibly hit and scratch the speedbooster, so do consider filing down if you go this route. I decided to play it safe and did not end up filing my lenses. One, I hope to shoot with them on an old manual 35mm camera one day... so I need to keep them in their intended form. Two, I'd also be concerned about resale value if I altered the lens in any way (or worse, got filed bits into the glass somehow). This is all the more reason I went with this particular product I am reviewing. I only provide the alternate route in this review for those who are researching their options, and why I am ultimately vouching for this product. Despite the slight wiggle, I'm happy with my choice and glad I don't have to file down my lenses!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The usual Metabones high quality but not all C/Y lenses work Works great with most of my Contax Zeiss lenses, but I think since the mounts changed subtly over the years, certain lenses like the 100-300mm don't fit. Otherwise it works great and it's nice having the extra speed especially for some of the slower Contax lenses.
