Pentax 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Versatile and long reaching the HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens from Pentax is an 84.5-460mm equivalent telephoto zoom designed for APS-C-format K-mount DSLRs. Ranging from portrait-length to super telephoto, this lens employs extra-low dispersion glass in its optical design in order to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the expansive zoom range. An HD coating has also been applied to lens elements to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Furthermore, an SP (Super Protect) coating has been applied to the front and rear surfaces of the lens, too, to guard against fingerprints, smudging, and cleaning marks.

Complementing the optical design is a quick performing PLM (Pulse Motor), which delivers smooth, quiet, and exacting autofocus operation to benefit both stills shooting and video recording. A compact and lightweight form factor, along with a retractable design, also caters to intuitive handling and use while traveling, while a weather-resistant construction benefits working in trying weather conditions.

Telephoto zoom 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 lens is designed for APS-C-format Pentax K-mount DSLRs, where it provides an 84.5-460mm equivalent focal length range.
Extra-low dispersion glass is used in the lens construction in order to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for increased image clarity.
An HD coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality when working in harsh, backlit lighting conditions.
The PLM affords quick autofocusing performance, and couples with an electromagnetic diaphragm to provide smooth and quiet operation that is especially well-suited to video recording applications. Use of this feature may require you to update your camera with the latest firmware in order to ensure accurate exposure results.
Weather-resistant construction features 11 distinct seals about the lens' body to prevent the intrusion of water and dust when working in harsh environments.
An SP coating is featured on the front and rear elements, and works to protect the glass from fingerprints, smudging, and other marks.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality when working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Retractable design maintains a sleek form factor, which is ideal for travel shooting.

    Pentax 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition for the K-70 I ordered. I ordered the K-70 with the 18-135 lens, as well as this lens, and I received both today. I like going to zoos, so I knew I'd need one with this range. I was going to get the older model with the screw drive autofocus, but I was concerned about the complaints regarding how loud and slow it was. I'm glad Pentax developed this one. I went to a nature park nearby and used it exclusively. I love it. It's got plenty of range, of course, autofocus is fast and quiet, it produces nice bokeh, I like the manual override in autofocus mode, and pictures are very sharp, to my very amateur eyes. Strongly recommended if you need the range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant! I still have the old version, which is very good, but is a bit slow to focus and, at times, is not very clear to the extreme focal. I bought by B & H (excellent quality of service and ultra fast delivery) this new lens for use with the new K-70 Pentax camera and I can say with confidence that this new lens is best at everything: sharpness at all focal lengths, precision, focus speed and good bokeh. Furthermore, together with the K-70, allows the variation of aperture during video recording, very effective. Excellent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Super Lens At An Excellent Price ! Everything good can be said about this lens. It is compact and great for hiking and the outdoors. The focus ( Pulse Motor ) is very fast and completely silent...and can be used for video also. The lens has the latest Pentax Coatings. The lens covers a very wide range and is excellent for wildlife and bird photography . And the price is very low also as compared to other long telephoto lenses. And after all of that the lens is sealed so you can take it outdoors and not be worried. You can't go wrong with this lens !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should be in your bag. I waited to see if the price would come down. Well I couldn't wait any longer so I bought it. Wow what a great lens. I have used the older version and this one is far superior to it. Quiet, quick and clear. I have shot with my Pentax K-5 and Pentax K-50. I was considering a 300 mm prime but was drawn to the flexibility of the 55-300 mm. So far I'm very happy with this lens and would highly recommend it. Great lens for the price. Shot these two photos right out of the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Met my expectations I like to do nature but mostly bird photography. You know they are not very cooperative and my old DA 55-300mm lens with the screw drive motor was just too slow. The photos I got were nice and clear when I didn't miss the shot. So as soon it was available I grabbed this lens hoping for a big difference. Oh , I am super happy. It focus' super quick(compared to the old 55-300 mm) My photos are crisp and clear just like its predecessor, . And I am not missing shots any more. I have only had it less than two weeks. First practice photos attached. And I am really happy to have a weather sealed lens again so I can use it like my other Pentax lenses. I use it with a K-3 just needs a firmware update and they pair up nicely

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens Upgrading from an old screw-drive motor lens this is a welcome addition to my camera bag. The pulse motor focuses much faster (aside from a few max focal range changes) and is entirely silent compared to the screw-drive. Primarily taking wildlife photos, this lens has been a savior for capturing those easy to miss shots that a longer focus time would fail to capture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Lens I bought this lens reluctantly. The reviews available indicated it might not be as good as I thought I needed, but the better choice was four times the price. Now that I have it, I know that this lens is well suited to my needs. Birds in flight were beyond my old lens because of slow auto focus. This lens captures BIF very well. AF is instantaneous. This is important when old eyes do not work well for manual focus. Closeup shots pop. The zoom range is really good. I shot 473 photos in two hours mostly of Ospreys and half of them in flight. 80% of them were technically very good to excellent. I am well pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Constructed primarily of unicorns and magic Every shot is razor sharp (except a few due to operator error), autofocus is super fast and rarely hunts, color rendition is gorgeous, and bokeh is great. I shot a good chunk of a (outdoor) wedding and the entirety of a (outdoor) portrait session with this lens, and I'm very pleased with the results.
