Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Overview

Versatile and long reaching the HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens from Pentax is an 84.5-460mm equivalent telephoto zoom designed for APS-C-format K-mount DSLRs. Ranging from portrait-length to super telephoto, this lens employs extra-low dispersion glass in its optical design in order to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the expansive zoom range. An HD coating has also been applied to lens elements to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Furthermore, an SP (Super Protect) coating has been applied to the front and rear surfaces of the lens, too, to guard against fingerprints, smudging, and cleaning marks.

Complementing the optical design is a quick performing PLM (Pulse Motor), which delivers smooth, quiet, and exacting autofocus operation to benefit both stills shooting and video recording. A compact and lightweight form factor, along with a retractable design, also caters to intuitive handling and use while traveling, while a weather-resistant construction benefits working in trying weather conditions.

Telephoto zoom 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 lens is designed for APS-C-format Pentax K-mount DSLRs, where it provides an 84.5-460mm equivalent focal length range.
Extra-low dispersion glass is used in the lens construction in order to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for increased image clarity.
An HD coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality when working in harsh, backlit lighting conditions.
The PLM affords quick autofocusing performance, and couples with an electromagnetic diaphragm to provide smooth and quiet operation that is especially well-suited to video recording applications. Use of this feature may require you to update your camera with the latest firmware in order to ensure accurate exposure results.
Weather-resistant construction features 11 distinct seals about the lens' body to prevent the intrusion of water and dust when working in harsh environments.
An SP coating is featured on the front and rear elements, and works to protect the glass from fingerprints, smudging, and other marks.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality when working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Retractable design maintains a sleek form factor, which is ideal for travel shooting.

Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Reviews

Best $400 I've spent in photography

Bottom line... I'm thrilled with the sharpness and color with this lens. I'm an amateur and always will be but this lens has opened up a great deal of new vista for me. Even from a 1/2 mile away, the detail is impressive. I'm a happy camper to say the least

Is it broken?

The silent focusing of the lens threw me at first. Made me think I got a broken lens. Have come to love it. Great price for a very good lens.

Used on the K3 MKIII I received from B&H at the same time. Haven't had time to work it out fully. I like, in review, pushing the center button on the K3 MKIII it shows the focus point. With 300mm, I may ask for a bird feeder for the holidays.

Quick and silent

The lens is a compact joy to use. Matched to K3iii, near-instant and silent autofocusing. Very compact with a locking button. Excellent sharpness to 250mm and stopped down to F8+ and pretty good wide open at 300m.

I was hesitant, I wish I bought this sooner.

I've been hesitant to buy it for over a year because I already had the 50-200. Is it really worth the cost for 55-300? Simply put, yes it is.

Pentax lens

I have been a Pentax person for many years, my first camera was a K1000 and later added the ME super to my bag. Loved them both but with the passage of time they got out dated. This new lens is awesome and can't tell you how pleased I am.

Great Lens

I didn't realize this when I ordered it, but the lens retracts when not in use. In the picture there is a dot and then the number 55. You can't actually take pictures between the dot and 55, but that area retracts the lens which for me means it fits in my regular camera bag. I don't have to remove the lens to fit it in my bag. That's awesome. I took about 250 pictures with it this past weekend. I was amazed by how sharp the images were. I zoomed on the computer, and there is a lot of detail in the images. I think they are very sharp especially considering I was hand holding it and following a lot of action (my daughter and her friends were horseback riding). I am very pleased with my purchase.c

" Mr. James B. (Staff)" says this lens will work in a K5 IIs, but in Pentax Forums and Ricoh website, they say it will not operate the diaphragm at all (always wide open), My question is: who is right?. (at least right now, june/2019)
Asked by: ROBERTO
If you upgrade your firmware on your camera to Version IV (4), then the lens will work and you shouldn't have any issues.
