Savage LED-SB overview

  • 1Description

The LED Portrait Kit from Savage is a great starter lighting kit for portraiture products or E-commerce. The kit comes with 2 dimmable LED lights each with a 20 x 20" softbox, 6' light stand and a protective pouch. A padded carry case is included to store and transport it all.

The dimmable LED lights are an extremely photography-friendly light source. Although together they output a similar amount of light to a 600W tungsten light, they only use 70W of power and run cool to the touch so there's no risk of discomfort. And they're 5600K daylight balance so their color matches window light or the outdoors. The 20 x 20" softboxes are ideal for portraiture, rendering diffuse flattering light with open shadows that you can fine-tune with each light's onboard dimmer.

  • Two chip on board LED video lights produce 5600K daylight balanced light
  • Combined output of the two lights is the equivalent of 600W incandescent light while only using 70W of electricity
  • LED chips generate virtually no heat
  • CRI: 90
  • Easy open softboxes measure 20" wide
  • Stepless dimmer allows for maximum light control
  • XL padded carry bag allows for easy transport & convenient storage

    Savage LED-SB reviews

LED Portrait Kit is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall good product for the price TL:DR - This is a good light kit for the price. I wanted an LED light kit for a project where the heat from incandescent lights would be troublesome. After exploring various options, I settled on this kit. The kit arrived well packaged, each item in the kit was individually packed. There was no documentation/manual provided. There is a large light duty padded case to store/carry the kit, with extra room for a few extension cords and other odds-and-ends. The lights are decently made, but there are exposed solder connections on the face of the light that could short out if you were creative enough (12 VDC). There is a dimmer on the light that indicates dimming from 100-10%, actual dimming seems to be from 100 to maybe 50-40%. There is a slight delay between adjusting the dimmer and the light dimming, also happens when you turn it on (wait a second for the light). Color temperature is close to daylight. The lights never get more than warm, and are silent (no hum/buzz). The mount is all plastic, and head tilt is adjusted by a screw knob and a ratchet in the mount. The mount seems a bit flimsy. There is a padded bag for each light. The reflectors store in a pouch with a warning tag about unfolding them - believe the tag. The reflector just slips over the front of the light, and a few of the outer LEDs are covered when the reflector is in place. One diffuser mounts inside the reflector with clips, the other velcros over the front. The tripods extend 6 feet. The vertical sections move smoothly enough, and have spring cushions if you let a sections drop. The tripod legs are stiff and take some effort to extend and collapse. The locks are low quality. These are definitely light duty tripods, and you should use a weight on the base if you extend them to their full height, especially when the reflectors are on the lights. Overall, everything seems reasonably well made for what it is. Treat this kit with care, it should last, but it wont take much abuse to destroy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent working set for this money I bought this set for about year ago for my home studio (I do headshot photography) and I was never disappointed with this one. Light is flat and consistent and size of softboxes is good enough to fill all over the face. Of course they are often in a frame, but just one button in Photoshop makes them go away. This set would be perfect for people who want to start shooting on professional level, but not ready to invest a lot of money into the light, so as to buy something cheap and waiting for success is knocking on the door. I really impressed that the price for this set is even lower than just for one speedlite I also use. Great job, Savage people!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No support for product We purchased this product 7 years ago. At the time it had 3 lights and stands. It was priced right and is a valuable tool, especially for one-on-one interviews. It takes awhile to set up since you have to build each light. (I understand the company has made this slightly easier with their new kit.) My problem is that one of the lights failed. The on/off switch fried. I contacted the company and they told me the product was out of warranty (which I assumed) and that they could not provide me with the switch - even if I paid for it. They suggested getting in touch with B&H. The lamp alone is not available and neither is the part. I do NOT consider this good product support from Savage. I would not buy a product from them again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from They're ok. I'm realizing they're limitations These LED lights are lightweight and very easy to set up. With the soft box installed they really don't throw as much light as you'd expect from a tungsten 650. Don't expect to light a room with these, they're really for a sit-down interview/portrait situation only. So, if you are able to walk them in close to your subject you'll be please with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent video lights I absolutely love this kit. Everything is very sturdy. I love how the soft boxes pop open and fold down. The bag is great. I love, love, love it. I used them in tandem with a ring light for a video shoot (see pics).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Avoid these, there are much better for this price Disappointed with these. They are quite loud, so if you are using these lights for video the noise will be in the audio. The dim feature only reduces to about 50%, so the percentage indicator is misleading. Worse is my units produce a small amount of smoke, so the lights can only be used for small time periods. Then the windows need to be opened. The stands for the lights are sturdy at least.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good light for the money This is a very good light kit for the beginner of the person that needs lights but not all of the time. For my use the lights will be perfect. I'll use them a couple of times a month. These most likely won't stand up to run and gun shooting or lots of putting up and taking down. The biggest negative to me is the case is so big just to accommodate the barn doors. If there was a way to make it more compact would be a huge positive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Lights for the Price I checked out a lot of light sets including wanting to compile my own and ultimately decided on this one. Well built set up. The black/reflective piece of the soft box is a little chipped away despite them having individual cases. There's a lag on adjusting the dial. And the carrying case is HUGE considering the needed spaces, but I'm just using it for other equipment so I don't hate that last part. Other than that, great set.
