WD WD8001FFWX overview

  • 1Description

Designed with SMB customers in mind, the 8TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD from WD is well-suited for medium to large-scale NAS environments with up to sixteen 3.5" drive bays. Engineered to handle increased workloads, this 8TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 128MB cache, and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, which all help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a sustained rate of up to 205 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 600,000 load/unload cycles, <10 in 1015 non-recoverable read errors per bits read, dual-plane balance control technology, and 1,000,000 hours MTBF for 8-16 bay NAS systems. Shock protection is provided by a multi-axis shock sensor and WD's NASware 3.0 helps increase system compatibility, allowing Red Pro drives to be more easily integrated with your existing network infrastructure.

General Features

NAS for Big Business
Increase the efficiency and productivity of your business with WD Red Pro hard drives for up to 16-bay NAS systems. The WD Red Pro comes equipped with NASware 3.0, which increases system compatibility allowing for integration with your existing network infrastructure. Add value to your business by enabling your employees to quickly share their files and back up folders reliably with WD Red Pro NAS hard drives in your NAS solution
NASware 3.0 Technology
WD's advanced firmware technology, NASware 3.0, enables integration, robust data protection, and improved performance for NAS systems operating under heavy demand
Built for NAS Compatibility
Desktop drives aren't purpose-built for NAS, but WD Red Pro drives with NASware are. WD's technology helps takes the guesswork out of selecting a drive and balances performance and reliability in NAS and RAID environments. Simply put, WD Red Pro is compatible with medium to large NAS enclosures
Larger NAS Bay Shock Protection
WD Red Pro is equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events and dynamic fly height technology which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. This combination of technology further protects the drives in larger 1 to 16 bay NAS environments and helps increase hard drive reliability
3D Active Balance Plus
WD's enhanced dual-plane balance control technology helps improve the overall drive performance and reliability. Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the hard drive life span, and degrade the performance over time
Error Recovery Prevention
Built specifically for RAID and NAS environments, WD Red Pro drives come equipped with error recovery controls as part of NASware 3.0, which prevents the drive from fallout in RAID applications.
Extended Drive Testing
A NAS environment that has up to 16 bays is very demanding on a hard drive with added vibration, heat, and other factors. This is why every WD Red Pro drive is shipped with extended thermal cycle burn-in testing which helps certify each drive for extended reliable operation

    WD WD8001FFWX reviews

8TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from 1 DOA, 1 fails to initialize, 1 failure predicted Ordered four for use in an OWC ThunderBay 4 / TB2 enclosure. Intent was to use all 4 in a SoftRAID-based RAID 5 setup. Attempted to mount all four drives: One arrived DOA, would not mount. One would mount, but not initialize in SoftRAID or Disk Utility. Of the two that successfully mounted and initialized, one failed certification in SoftRAID after a few minutes. I've had nothing but good results in the past with WD drives and with OWC enclosures - all ordered from other vendors. I suspect B&H's usual damage-prone shipping methods are to blame. Sending these all back and ordering from a more reliable vendor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed! We recently moved and, during that move, my Drobo case, which contained 18TB of hard drives took a nose dive and stopped working...this was all my photos for the entire 21st Century! Luckily, I had everything backed up to Carbonite, but needed to get it back, so I went to B&H's website, purchased a new Drobo and 3 8TB Drives. I needed the fastest drives I could get, so I ordered these. Since my Drobo is always on, I decided to get the NAS versions. I'm glad I did. My photos have been restoring for less than 2 weeks--I still have a long way to go--but I'm more than happy with this choice and will purchase more as the need arises.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding performance I've tested the standard red against the PRO- worth the added cost if performance is critical to your requirements

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great performance and quality I have eight of these drives in a Synology DS3617xs with room for more. I have trusted Western Digital drives to store my data for years and never had a problem. These Pro series drives are designed for larger NAS systems and have been performing perfectly without any issue since they were installed. Expensive, yes, but I wouldn't trust my data to anything else in a large array.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HDD works Purchased 6 for my new qnap TS-653B. Installation was very simple. Turned unit on and all 6 drives were recognized. Set up raid and done. I got the Pro versions for the extra mtbf rating and extended warranty over the normal reds. Simply my personal choice. System is very quite with 6 drives in a QNAP TS-653B and the system is installed on a shelf in bedroom.
