MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X overview

  • 1Description

With an overclocked core, slightly overclocked memory, customizable LED lights, and based on NVIDIA's Pascal architecture, the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G Graphics Card provides major improvements in performance, memory bandwidth, and power efficiency over its predecessor, the high-performance Maxwell architecture. It also introduces innovative graphics features and technologies that redefine the computer as the platform for playing AAA games and taking full advantage of virtual reality via NVIDIA VRWorks.

The front panel of the card features a variety of outputs. There are three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs in addition to an HDMI 2.0b output and a DVI-D Dual-Link output. The GTX 1080 is not just about high-resolution gaming. Computationally intensive programs can utilize the GPU's 1920 cores to accelerate tasks using CUDA or other APIs.

To keep cool, even when overclocked, MSI implemented their Twin Frozr VI cooler on this card. The Twin Frozr VI cooler uses two large fans to force air through the heatsink and dissipate heat and lower the GPU's internal temperature. Because this kind of cooler recirculates air back into the case, this card works best in cases that have unrestricted airflow. There are several LED lights on the GPU, which can be controlled individually by choosing any of the animation effects available in the MSI Gaming App. You can have choose to have the LED lights respond to game sounds or music. You can pick a static color or have it breathing and flashing. Of course, you can just turn them off if you don't need them.

VRWorks
VRWorks Graphics includes a simultaneous multi-projection capability that renders natively to the unique dimensions of VR displays instead of traditional 2D monitors. It also renders geometry for the left and right eyes simultaneously in a single pass.

VRWorks Audio uses the NVIDIA OptiX ray-tracing engine to trace the path of sounds across an environment in real-time, fully reflecting the size, shape, and material of the virtual world.

NVIDIA PhysX for VR detects when a hand controller interacts with a virtual object, and enables the game engine to provide a physically accurate visual and haptic response. It also models the physical behavior of the virtual world around the user so that all interactions -- whether an explosion or a hand splashing through water -- behave as if in the real world.
NVIDIA Ansel
With Ansel, gamers can compose the gameplay shots they want, pointing the camera in any direction and from any vantage point within a gaming world. They can capture screenshots at up to 32 times the screen resolution, and then zoom in where they choose without losing fidelity. With photo-filters, they can add effects in real-time before taking the shot. And they can capture 360-degree stereo photospheres for viewing in a VR headset or Google Cardboard.
SLI Ready
With a compatible motherboard and a connecting bracket, two or more NVIDIA GPUs of the same model can combine processing power using NVIDIA's Scalable Link Interface (SLI). How the cards work together can be customized to suit your preferences. Alternate frame rendering has each alternating card prepare the next frame, essentially multiplying the capabilities of a single card's maximum capable frame rate output. Each card in the configuration can also be used to improve anti-aliasing by being able to process an image in parallel with the other cards before filtering out jagged edges.

NVIDIA's SLI HB bridge doubles the available transfer bandwidth compared to the NVIDIA Maxwell architecture. Delivering smooth gameplay, it's an effective way to enjoy surround gaming and it's only compatible with the GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 graphics cards.

Note: The benefits of SLI will vary based on component configuration.
CUDA
With CUDA, NVIDIA allows applications to hand off CPU-intensive tasks to the GPU. Your GPU is no longer just used for rendering graphics, but it can provide teraflops of floating point performance and accelerate application tasks, from real-time video rendering to fluid dynamics simulation. CUDA is used in many applications and games.
G-SYNC Ready
When used with a monitor that has G-SYNC hardware installed, the monitor's refresh rate will sync and lock with the graphics card's output frame rate. Establishing this sync removes tearing and stuttering which can result from conventional fixed screen refresh rates, especially important for gaming in stereoscopic 3D. An additional benefit of G-SYNC is reduced lag so gamers will benefit from the improved command response time as well.
NVIDIA GPU Boost 3.0
Boosts the card's clock speed in real-time based on the target temperature. If the card is running below the set target temperature, GPU Boost 3.0 will increase the clock speed to improve performance. The target temperature can be reset depending on your preference so you can have the card run more quietly for everyday tasks and older games, and run at full tilt during intense high-resolution gaming sequences.

MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X reviews

GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G Graphics Card is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from MSI GTX1080 Goodness Nice graphics power for 4K resolution. The MSI cooling works great and is very quiet. Under low usage it spins down and when it spins up the sound is minimal. The MSI gaming app works but I did have some issues with it on a different MSI card. I like the Gaming and OC settings that can be selected quickly on the desktop. I've been pleased with MSI products last two years and their build quality. B&H Photo pricing, purchasing and shipping has been excellent but I'm in NJ and now have to pay sales taxes. It was nice while it lasted on the tax savings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding The MSI 1080 Gaming X, be sure that no game will hold-you to play with Ultra setting, especially if you are in 1080P! BF1/Destiny 2/ARK: Survival Evolved/PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS/Grand Theft Auto V/Warframe with a 100 FPS stable. The card does not heat masses; It goes up to 75C Max in gaming and fans not always running; you should also know that the fans turn once the card passes 60C,but you can control it via MSI Afterburner software.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome!!! Hitting 2050 MHz with the card. I cant recommend the card enough. Will be buying a second card soon for my gaming rig. Running with a 6,700K I7 and only 8G of ram at the moment and hitting up to 180+ FPS in GTA5 at 1080P with all max settings. Average is about 130 FPS. Fans can get a little loud under load but any card will. I like that fans turn off when card is cool. Card never gets over low 70C. Right now I have the FPS capped at 60FPS with Vsync and if the fans are coming on I don't here them. Going to upgrade to a 100 FPS, 1440P monitor with Vsync as the card is overkill for my current monitor. I would highly recommend the card to any one looking for a killer card to game on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zero regrets buying this video card. I bought this card as an upgrade from sli gtx 660ti. I must say this is an awesome GPU. I can put shadows back into my gaming. The performance is great and the card doesn't even break a sweat. I highly recommend this card to anyone looking to improve their gaming quality. You will not be disappointed. As for B&H, I am very pleased with the quickness they handled my order. Free 2 day shipping is very appealing for me. I received exactly what I ordered (a new gtx 1080) not a return or refurbished card. TL;DR Overall I am happy with the product and service I received from this site.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would buy again for SLI I cant describe what type of awesomeness this card is. This card is amazing, I upgraded from a 960 to this and the fps, no stuttering(I had a problem where my card would stutter if it got above 100 fps), it keeps itself cool without needing the fans, power consumption is fantastic, it looks stunning, I could go on. This card is well worth the price. 11/10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As it good as it ought to be at these prices! I had a little hiccup when I forgot to uninstall my previous card's drivers before installing this card, but once that was done, everything worked fine. So far, gaming with this on a 1440p monitor has been fantastic! I've been maxing out video settings with no issues so far, although I am usually a little bit behind the curve in terms of when I buy games - I'm not paying $60 per title! (says the guy who just paid almost $700 for a vid card) Ran benchmarks, stress tests, overclocking, and so far everything is peachy. I had wanted to wait for the AMD card that could challenge this one and the rumor was that it might come Q4 '16. But when it was finally stated that it wouldn't come until 1st half of '17, I couldn't wait any longer as my old card fried itself. Anyway, I'd get this again, for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is likely the best available. This product has been absolutely erfect. I havent yet tested with vr but i know it wil be amazing. The sound flare on the card itself looks amazing in mycase, ad even with the red theme the multicoor sound flare still looks beautiful. I would definitely buy two of these for sli later on.
