MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X overview

  • 1Description

Featuring an overclocked core, slightly overclocked memory, customizable LED lights, and based on NVIDIA's Pascal architecture, the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G Graphics Card provides major improvements in performance, memory bandwidth, and power efficiency over its predecessor, the high-performance Maxwell architecture. It also introduces innovative graphics features and technologies that redefine the computer as the platform for playing AAA games and taking full advantage of virtual reality via NVIDIA VRWorks.

The front panel of the card features a variety of outputs. There are three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs in addition to an HDMI 2.0b output and a DVI-D Dual-Link output. The GTX 1070 is not just about high-resolution gaming. Computationally intensive programs can utilize the GPU's 1920 cores to accelerate tasks using CUDA or other APIs.

To keep cool, even when overclocked, MSI implemented their Twin Frozr VI cooler on this card. The Twin Frozr VI cooler uses two large fans to force air through the heatsink and dissipate heat and lower the GPU's internal temperature. Because this kind of cooler recirculates air back into the case, this card works best in cases that have unrestricted airflow. There are several LED lights on the GPU, which can be controlled individually by choosing any of the animation effects available in the MSI Gaming App. You can have choose to have the LED lights respond to game sounds or music. You can pick a static color or have it breathing and flashing. Of course, you can just turn them off if you don't need them.

VRWorks
VRWorks Graphics includes a simultaneous multi-projection capability that renders natively to the unique dimensions of VR displays instead of traditional 2D monitors. It also renders geometry for the left and right eyes simultaneously in a single pass.

VRWorks Audio uses the NVIDIA OptiX ray-tracing engine to trace the path of sounds across an environment in real-time, fully reflecting the size, shape, and material of the virtual world.

NVIDIA PhysX for VR detects when a hand controller interacts with a virtual object, and enables the game engine to provide a physically accurate visual and haptic response. It also models the physical behavior of the virtual world around the user so that all interactions -- whether an explosion or a hand splashing through water -- behave as if in the real world.
NVIDIA Ansel
With Ansel, gamers can compose the gameplay shots they want, pointing the camera in any direction and from any vantage point within a gaming world. They can capture screenshots at up to 32 times the screen resolution, and then zoom in where they choose without losing fidelity. With photo-filters, they can add effects in real-time before taking the shot. And they can capture 360-degree stereo photospheres for viewing in a VR headset or Google Cardboard.
SLI Ready
With a compatible motherboard and a connecting bracket, two or more NVIDIA GPUs of the same model can combine processing power using NVIDIA's Scalable Link Interface (SLI). How the cards work together can be customized to suit your preferences. Alternate frame rendering has each alternating card prepare the next frame, essentially multiplying the capabilities of a single card's maximum capable frame rate output. Each card in the configuration can also be used to improve anti-aliasing by being able to process an image in parallel with the other cards before filtering out jagged edges.

NVIDIA's SLI HB bridge doubles the available transfer bandwidth compared to the NVIDIA Maxwell architecture. Delivering smooth gameplay, it's an effective way to enjoy surround gaming and it's only compatible with the GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 graphics cards.

Note: The benefits of SLI will vary based on component configuration.
CUDA
With CUDA, NVIDIA allows applications to hand off CPU-intensive tasks to the GPU. Your GPU is no longer just used for rendering graphics, but it can provide teraflops of floating point performance and accelerate application tasks, from real-time video rendering to fluid dynamics simulation. CUDA is used in many applications and games.
G-SYNC Ready
When used with a monitor that has G-SYNC hardware installed, the monitor's refresh rate will sync and lock with the graphics card's output frame rate. Establishing this sync removes tearing and stuttering which can result from conventional fixed screen refresh rates, especially important for gaming in stereoscopic 3D. An additional benefit of G-SYNC is reduced lag so gamers will benefit from the improved command response time as well.
NVIDIA GPU Boost 3.0
Boosts the card's clock speed in real-time based on the target temperature. If the card is running below the set target temperature, GPU Boost 3.0 will increase the clock speed to improve performance. The target temperature can be reset depending on your preference so you can have the card run more quietly for everyday tasks and older games, and run at full tilt during intense high-resolution gaming sequences.

MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X reviews

GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G Graphics Card is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Card, Great Price Great graphics card, aesthetics are really nice and sleek, the red LEDs show nice on the bottom and the MSI logo is bright. Good display options, runs really fast, is overclockable, and fits well in my case. Beware, it is both wider and longer than other cards. These things are beasts, and have the size to go with it. The backplate is really smooth, with angles cut into it and a cool gray MSI dragon. The thing performs really well, and is definitely an improvement on last gen cards. It comes with a lot of bloatware, I'd rather just use my BIOS to OC my CPU and MSI Afterburner to OC my 1070, but other than that 4 stars would recommend, especially for 200 bucks less than the 1080.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Expensive, but powerful, and quiet... This GTX 1070 version comes equipped with a large price tag, but fortunately includes powerful graphics and a cooler which is up to the task of not blowing out your eardrums. While the price premium over what nVidia claims these things should cost ($380 for baseline models) is pretty high, I can't complain about a card that pushes 4k resolution in games and doesn't make a racket doing it. If you're looking for something that will handle your high resolution gaming needs, this card is great at 1440, and adequate at 4k. If you like to not wake the dead with your fan noise, this card is for you. Literally the only gripe I have is the price, which was $70 more than nVidia claimed these cards would cost as a base. (Typically you'd expect a markup on the better cards like this one, but not that much of one.) If the price comes down to around $400, this card becomes five stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from MSI GTX 1070 Gaming 8G This is probably one of the best cards Ive ever owned. However I would either advise spending more and getting a GTX 1080 or saving and getting a 1060. There are two versions of this card one with Micron and one with Samsung VRAM the micron is not as good if you plan on over clocking passed the Factory OC. This is the version I received and was fairly disappointed. However it is still a solid card.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Tier Gpu. Graphics cards have evolved an incredible amount over time. This GPU reveals what an above par card looks and preforms. My experiences with this card is The cooling on the card is phenomenal. Not only is it effective, it is almost silent. Msi's fan curve allows for the fan to spin win needed at certain percentages. No more listening to the fans spin while idling. The card's build quality is great. it has a thick back plate and a strong design with amazing heat-pipes and cooling. Msi is also a great company, their rma experience is amazing (if you even need it). Fast quick and elegant. They have promotions and customer support like no other. I would recommend this card (gaming x twin frost series) and this 1070 for anyone who wants to buy a new gpu

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great graphics card! I originally purchased the Founders Edition 1070. The performance was amazing on a 1440p experience. But the problem was the heat. I mean it got hot in the room. On top of that, the fan was pretty loud. Therefore, I knew I had to find a different card. The MSI 1070 GTX Gaming X solved both my problems. The fan only turns on when the card reaches about 60 celcius and it's really quiet even when it's on. As far as the cooling goes, it idles at about 38c and 69-72c while gaming at 1440p. It's a great card. Highly recommend it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great performance, ease of install, and beautiful! I am not a professional PC builder. This is probably my 4th and over the years, I find that the normal hardware/software hurtles become less and less. Installing this video card in my son's new PC build was the easiest thus far! Win 10 recognized the card enough and got my up and running with basic features until I was able to install the Nvidia and MSI drivers, then WOW! Be prepared to be amazed. Considering the PC this build is replacing is over 5 years old. It was really plug/play. PROS: easy install. High performance out of the box. Fan noise is zero to low depending on your GPU/system load. Good looking GPU board case. Slightly thinner than some other offerings out there. 8GB memory should be plenty for everything that will be thrown at it. CONS: Shame to hide (but all other designs are similar) the great looking GPU board case on the bottom! Is it that difficult to reverse the board architecture and put the fans/LEDs on the TOP? No VGA, but since this is supposed to be a step up from analog monitors, it is understandable why include VGA? RGB controllable LEDs is cool but the ones surrounding the fans are covered (???) in red clear plastic. So kinds of defeats the purpose as any color other than red is muted out. Cost is about a 3rd of the entire build, even though this was an older previous year release. OVERALL: recommended buy if you want one of the best GPU cards. However, the difference between this GPU and others for slightly less cost may not be apparent in actual day to day use, unless you are planning to play high stress games in max detail modes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Graphics Card Above Easy installation. The card's fans do not rotate unless the temperature exceeds the maximum temperature around 150 degrees F. Running at a temperature of 75 - 95F with no fan cooling. Editing large videos is a breeze.
