You can track as many as 20 dogs wearing compatible collars up to nine miles away with the Astro 430 GPS Dog Tracking System by Garmin. It allows you to record the details of your hunt, and comes with pre-loaded topo maps of the entire United States and a year's satellite imagery subscription.
The handheld Astro 430 features a 2.5 second update rate, so you'll always know where your dogs are. It receives both GPS and GLONASS for more precise and accurate positioning than with GPS alone. The maximum line-of-sight range is nine miles for Garmin T 5 collar devices and four miles for T 5 Mini collar devices.
The TOPO U.S. 100K mapping package consists of topographic maps comparable to 1:100,000 scale U.S. Geological Survey maps of the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. It includes terrain contours, topo elevations, summits, parks, coastlines, rivers, lakes, and geographical points. The Astro 430 also comes with a one-year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, with detailed color images for a real-life view of roads, buildings and terrain that can be integrated with your maps. There's a microSD slot you can use to add additional mapping packages. You can view maps and satellite imagery on BaseCamp, the included trip-planning software with many uses for outdoors enthusiasts.
You can share the position of your dogs during the hunt with a number of other Garmin devices, such as the DriveTrack 70 GPS navigator. And you can record metrics of your hunts – dogs' times, distances traveled, overall scores, number of times when an "on point" or "treed" event was indicated – for more effective training. There's even a special waypoint feature called the Covey Counter that shows the exact location, time of day and elevation where you found your prey as well as the number of birds you flushed and took from that location. You can also set waypoints to find your way back to your camp or vehicle.
The Astro 430 handheld unit is water-resistant to IPX7, suitable for use in rain or snow. It runs on 2 AA alkaline batteries or Garmin's separately-sold NiMH battery pack.
