ikan DH5E overview

  • 1Description

With more cameras supporting 4K HDMI output, having a monitor like the Ikan DH5e, which can handle 4K video, is important. Any video input over HDMI is passed through without modification. Whether in-line with a recorder or just for monitoring purposes, the advantage of 4K support does not end there. Focusing aids benefit greatly from the added image fidelity. Legacy workflows are still supported, with NTSC and PAL signals supported over HDMI. The LCD panel of the DH5e is LED backlit and features a resolution of 1920 x 1080. This resolution can display Full HD video without scaling, ensuring tack-sharp critical focus representation for HD productions. 4K video benefits from the 1:1 pixel mapping function for added assurance.

This monitor includes various accessories so you can use it right out of the box. For working in bright conditions, use the sun hood to block glare and reflections. Use the included ball mount to secure the monitor to a standard accessory shoe. Keep your screen in optimal condition with the included screen protector and cleaning cloth. If you have Canon LP-E6 or Sony L-Series type batteries, use one of the included swappable plates. An AC adapter is included for powering from a wall outlet. Other features may be added in the future, and the firmware can be updated by downloading from the Ikan website to the included USB flash drive.

Peaking
Peaking highlights the sharpest (most in focus) areas of the image with a color outline. The VXF7 features two modes: monochrome and color. The monochrome mode shows the image in black and white with the red peaking outline, and the color peaking mode shows the image in color with a red peaking outline. Both the peaking color and sensitivity can be adjusted in the monitor's menu system
Movable Pixel-to-Pixel Mapping
1:1 pixel-to-pixel mapping allows you to look at parts of your image without any scaling, so you can see the actual detail and not be fooled by scaling artifacts. Using the navigation keys, the non-scaled area can be moved to analyze other portions of the image.
DSLR Scaling
The DSLR Scaling function enables you to extend your DSLR's HDMI output to any option of four display options: Normal, 3:2, 16:9, or Full Screen.

    ikan DH5E reviews

    DH5e 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would definitely recommend this product. I have the ikan DH7 monitor & love it but was too big & heavy to use with my Ronin-m. So I decided to give ikan's 5 version instead and love it just as much. Great sharp picture, has 4 user function buttons, has false color, pixel to pixel, histogram & much more. Pixel sharpness is 240 per square inch while the smallhd 5 is 241. So basically same resolution but $600 cheaper. Yes the smallhd has lut's ( a little better than function buttons ) , but I'm not willing to spend $899 Versus $299 just for that. If you want a great 1920x1080p - which also accepts 4K signal - monitor go with the ikan DH5e. You won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super sharp, super lightweight package! Fantastic monitor. Extremely sharp (don't even need peaking to tell when it's in focus). Don't listen to people's small complaints about this monitor on here... battery adapter plates fit snug (has a small lock tab you slide down to secure)... Battery life indicator now flashes at the bottom left of the screen to warn when battery is low. False color is also a great feature for checking exposure on skin tone for interviews *For most accurate color, I would suggest setting the color temperature in the menus to Red 125 Green 125 Blue 125.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The price is right but has one MAJOR flaw I use this on my ronin M gimbal and its just the right size and is very light HOWEVER, if you plan on shutting it off between shots you're screwed because this monitor sucks battery power even when you switch the power off. you leave the battery on over night... dead by morning. Serious pain especially for longer shoots. You have to be conscious to take off the battery in between and remember to hook it back on before you start up again. I was hoping this could be change with a firmware update but this monitor hasn't had any updates since it launched even though it comes with a usb specifically for future updates i wonder if the guys at ikan are even working on one. Kind of regretting my purchase but i have hopes that we will finally get this resolved. The monitor works great otherwise, but buyer beware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and Bright I decided to purchase this monitor after comparing it to the SmallHD Focus. Both were excellent, but I could not justify the additional $200 for the SmallHD. While the SmallHD resolves at 720p and the ikan resolves at 1080p, I could honestly not tell the difference. Colors were comparable, as well. I think the SmallHD is built a bit more solid, but again, really not a major difference. One major selling point is the full-sized HDMI ports. Much more solid. After using this monitor on a few occasions for event work, have no issues. Very happy with purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So confused ... So moved from a 7" Ikan Monitor to this 5" 4K monitor in case i ever wanted to upgrade my camera in the near future. I read the leaflet, spent some time going thru the internet and watching a lot of reviews on line. One feature i noticed was the low battery warning - i thought that was awesome and sold me on it . Unfortunately, there is no documentation to support this function - i did not know if it is audio or on screen - well it died a few times - never received an warning. I e mailed Ikan Support - NEVER got a response . Besides that it's a monitor - sorry i'm not impressed - the one function i hoped it had, doesn't seem to work - ?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Color is a bit off, but a good full HD monitor for the price I found out about this monitor about a month ago and was pretty intrigued. I was looking to pick up a good full HD monitor for my Ronin M. I have been using my Atomos Shogun, but the weight was a pain and the battery life was horrible. At this time, the only other monitor in this price range that is full 1920 HD is the Blackmagic Video Assist. I will also be purchasing one of these soon but I have heard that it has a ways to go in terms of being worth the extra $$. Anyway, back to the DH5.When the DH5 arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of accessories included:3 x screen protectors2 x cleaning cloths2 x battery plates (Sony NP-F L series & Canon E6)Wall ChargerSunhoodUSB drive (for firmware updates)Just as a reminder, no batteries are included. It would be nice to see some sort of case included, but at this price point I can come to terms with that. Out of the box I did have one small issue. The battery plates took some massive forcing to fit on initially. There's two tabs in the battery compartment that weren't property cut on mine, but exuding force on them removed the extra bits of plastic left behind and all worked fine after that.First impressions: Feels very cheap. SUPER light. I mean it weighs nothing. Unlike my Shogun, I wouldn't worry about damaging this too much if I dropped it. Even though it feels very plasticky, it seems decently well made. It is absolutely perfect for a gimbal even with a heavier NP-F770.Screen: Very sharp. I would say just as good as the panel on the Shogun. Brightness is very good too. Not the best in direct sunlight but not many are. The sunshade is a great help.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great unit with one small drawback We're not experiencing power problems at all as reported by another review. We find theresolution, sharpness and color to be excellent. Being lightweight, the DH5e feels most sensible and logical on a DSLR, but the unit certainly doesn't appear to be designed or built rugged enough for long term usage in a very rigorous work environment. We discovered the DH5e to be very power efficient, getting better than an hour on a single Canon battery. The downsides for us is that there are NO adjustment to the peaking or zebras at all. We'd like to see that ability to change the color or intensity of the peaking, as well as have control of over-exposure levels. Another consideration is that with the exception of audio metering, there is no way to use multiple tools simultaneously, such as zebras and peaking.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DON'T PUT ON THE SCREEN PROTECTOR It's a trap! If you're going to buy this professional 4k field monitor its probably not a bad piece of gear for the price. What I found out the hard way was when I first took it out of the box and decided to use the provided screen protector to obviously protect my screen from fingerprints. Boy was I wrong as the screen protector did the exact opposite. After applying the oversized screen protector with no instructions and no warnings of how frail the screen really is, I applied the protector as you would with a phone. First laying the protector in place and using a credit card to smooth out the air bubbles everything seemed okay, but once I turned the screen back on it was completely destroyed and unusable for my shoot the same day. Really its probably a good screen but right out of the box mine is useless. Be weary when applying your screen protector cause it just might do the opposite.
