Platypod Pro Max Overview

The Platypod Pro Max Camera Support is a wide, stable, and ultra low-profile platform that allows you to set up a large tripod head, camera, and lens on both horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Measuring 5.3 x 7.8" and only 0.2" thick, the Pro Max Camera Support allows you to photograph or record with a camera that is elevated only slightly higher than the tripod head it is used with. Four reversible, spiked feet that each feature rubber tips on one end can be distributed among five strategically placed, 1/4"-20 threaded holes. Once installed, they can be adjusted to level the platform on uneven surfaces, both indoors and out. For placement on unconventional surfaces and angles, two 2" belt slots allow the Pro Max Camera Support to be secured to a cylindrical object or to be taped onto angled floors. Two nail holes are included for permanent or semi-permanent mounting to walls, boards or ceilings; and for quick placement and removal from conventional tripods or quick release devices, 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded holes are on the underside of the platform.

When the spike feet and their locking nuts are not in use, a magnetized storage box holds them against the top of the Platypod Pro Max Camera Support. Able to hold up to 300 lb, the Platypod Pro Max Camera Support accepts tripod heads with 3/8"-16 mounts, and is constructed from anodized, aluminum-alloy for durability and corrosion resistance.

This will get you out of the box; pictures at ground level are more interesting than those taken 6ft(2m) off the ground.

I have just unboxed this product and my first impression is a very positive one. Very sturdy. I wanted to point out a previous review where he mentions the tightening knobs on the manfrotto ball head does not clear the pod as they extend further down. The manfrotto heads you are able to pull out the lever and ratchet it back so this is not an issue.

Have PlatypodMax, will travel

I'm using the Manfrotto MHXPRO-BHQ2 ball head because I love the 200PL quick release plate. However, I ran into a snag when I first used it on the Platypod, the fact that the locking lever does not clear the base (see picture) because the knob extends past the bottom of the ball head. So, it is not a simple matter of snapping a ball head onto the Platypod, and off you go. However, with some tweaking one can around the problem by first tightening the locking lever as much as possible before screwing the ball head onto the Platypod. Then, use the =/- tightening knob to secure the ball head firmly. Make fine adjustment if needed. So far, I have only used the Platypod for low angle shots (without involving spikes) and I simply LOVE it, despite the prep. The device handles my 5-lb Sigma long lens (150-600mm) with ease and tenacity. Don't let the sharp ends of the spikes discourage you. I learned from the inventor that the stainless-steel acorn nuts (1/4 inch - 20) that one can get from a hardware store will screw on just fine. I have bought four such nuts and am keeping them in the nice red pouch in case I need them. I am sure this Platypod Max will go places where a conventional tripod fears to tread. I would have given this device a five star had it not been the shortcoming described above.

some tweeking had to be done to support my red komodo, removed the middle screw, made two new threded holes to add a smallrig manfrotto compatible plate and it worked! something that anybody with tools can do.

This is a very useful accessory for getting low camera angles. It also easily placed in awkward locations and with its accessory kit can be strapped securely to things like rails, trees, and post. It is a very well made piece of kit

I haven't used my platypod in the field yet, but I've practiced, and I love it. From the minute I opened the box, I knew I would be happy with this item. First, it is an elegant, inspired design. It is sturdy, clear in its features, and, honestly, quite beautiful. Second, I now have two tripods without the inconvenience of all those legs and height. It slips right into the pocket of my camera bag. I am so eager to put it to the test.

The name says it all, MAX. This is made from the stuff they used to make cars out of. Solid, strong and dependable! Strap it, screw it, nail it, or let it stand on it own, the possibilities are endless. For going LOW, you can't get any lower.
