SLR Magic SLRA40-1.33X Overview

The SLR Magic Anamorphot-40 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter allows you to expand your creative horizons, enabling you to capture footage with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio on your camera with a 16:9 sensor. This results with an image that out of the camera will look distorted, as if your subjects were stretched tall and thin. This is easily corrected with virtually any modern NLE, creating an image suitable for widescreen viewing.

The Anamorphot-40 features adjustable focus marked normal and near. The near adjustment allows you to focus on subjects as close as 4' away; setting the adapter to normal enables you to focus on subjects from 4' to infinity. It mounts to lenses with a non-rotating front and a front thread diameter of 52mm; it incorporates an 82mm front filter thread. SLR Magic recommends that the Anamorphot-40 1.33x be used with lenses that have a front element that is physically no larger than 40mm in diameter.

A 16:9 sensor records an image with an aspect ratio of approximately 1.78:1, and if you want to convert that to a more cinematic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1, you could crop your image in post. However, this leads to a loss in resolution and image degradation. The Anamorphot-40 1.33x squeezes the image horizontally, which creates the classic tall / thin image that must be de-squeezed in post. The anamorphic process allows you to capture your image using your entire sensor, so there is no loss in resolution when compared with cropping your image.
Testing before use is highly recommended, especially when choosing which lenses may be compatible with the Anamorphot-40. When using a taking lens with a Sony E-Mount, SLR Magic recommends using either the SLR Magic CINE II 35mm T1.4 @2.8 or higher or the SLR Magic CINE 50mm f/1.1 also at 2.8 or higher. When using the Anamorphot-40 on a taking lens for an MFT mount/sensor, SLR Magic recommends either the SLR Magic HyperPrime 25mm T0.95 @2.8 or higher or the HyperPrime 35mm T1.4 @2.8 or higher.

Please note that SLR Magic cautions that for full frame work a 75mm taking lens is required, a 50mm taking lens may only cover when your camera is in APS-C or S35/APS-C sensor mode. When using this adapter on a 25mm , the image will cover a Four Thirds sensor.
The Anamorphot-40 1.33x screws onto your lens's front, providing the classic anamorphic effect. Once screwed onto your lens, rotate the anamorphot-40 so that the white witness mark is at the 12 o'clock position and the anamorphic effect is horizontal. Then rotate the locking ring counter clockwise to tighten it against the front of your lens and lock the rotation so it doesn't move.
The Normal/Near adjustments ring allows you to fine-tune the focus of your lens for shooting subjects as close as 4' from the lens.
It features an 82mm filter thread so you can attach optional filters or diopters. Please note that SLR Magic indicates that use with diopters may cause vignetting.

question

I have a Panasonic GH5S, and I understand it has a multi-aspect sensor that works slightly differently than the sensors on the GH4 or GH5. I also have 3 lenses: the SLR Magic Cine 35mm T1.4 Mark II, the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 HyperPrime Cine III, and the Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f/0.95 (all are M43 mounts). Will the SLR Magic Anamorphot-40 1.33x work with all three lenses on the GH5S, or just (or at least the best with) the SLR Magic 25mm? Thanks!
Asked by: Nate H.
This adapter will work with both the 25 and 35mm lenses you have, which were designed with this adapter in mind. However it will not work with the 17.5mm, which is too wide to work with the Anamorphot.

question

Hi, I got some MFT lenses with 58mm Front Thread, Can I use this adapter with them by attaching a 58-52mm step down ring?
Asked by: James Z.
It is possible to mount the lens that way. However, first measure the front (glass) element of your lens. If it is larger than 40mm in diameter, SLR Magic does not recommend their adapters use.

There is no information stating that the SLR Magic Anamorphot-40 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter can work with a Super16 size sensor. The smallest sensor they speak of is MFT.

What len's focal length work with this version? 28, 40, or 50mm?
Asked by: Jason
The focal length that works best depends on your camera and the sensor size being used. Here is what SLR Magic says: When using a taking lens with a Sony E-Mount, SLR Magic recommends using either the SLR Magic CINE II 35mm T1.4 @2.8 or higher or the SLR Magic CINE 50mm f/1.1 also at 2.8 or higher.
