Marantz Professional SG-5BC Overview

  • 1Description

The Marantz Professional Audio Scope SG-5BC is a battery-powered short shotgun microphone offering variable directivity and low visibility for sound recordists, filmmakers, and content creators in ENG, EFP, and various audio-for-video productions. Its lightweight body is compact and durable, making it ideal for mounting on a camera or boompole—it even includes multiple mic clips to accommodate such scenarios.

Powered via a AA battery (available separately), the electret condenser element yields a frequency response of 70 Hz to 16 kHz, naturally attenuating extreme low and high frequencies for a clear, intelligible tone. The selectable cardioid or supercardioid polar pattern provides customizable rejection of off-axis sounds such as room ambience or environmental noise.

Reduce wind noise and plosives by fitting the supplied windscreen to the SG-5BC. The microphone's attached cable is terminated with a 3.5mm TS connector to ensure compatibility with mic inputs on a variety of cameras, portable recorders, and wireless transmitters.

    Marantz Professional SG-5BC Reviews

Audio Scope SG-5BC Battery-Powered Short Shotgun Microphone with 3.5mm Plug is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Shotgun Mic This microphone has a good build quality feel.  I like having both a cardioid and super cardioid setting and tried it out with my DSLR Sony A6500.  The super cardioid setting had a lot of noise.  I found that under seven feet, the cardioid setting had a lot better sound quality but wasnt as loud.  After about 7 feet from the mic to the sound source, it was better to switch to the super cardioid and just deal with the noise because boosting the sound with the cardioid setting produced just as much noise.  Overall, I wasnt expecting much but this was decent.  I would purchase it again.  If you are looking for a shotgun mic for your DSLR and want something better than the built in mic, this will do.  If you are making a professional video, look for something better.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from If you are decent at audio, it is ok. So I know how to do noise reduction and de-hissing in post, so it isnt a super big deal for me, and therefore it is ok for the super cheap price (if you pay any more than $20 you are ripped off), but it is EXTREMELY hissy and nowhere near the quality of my other 2 supercardiod shotgun mics (a Mova and another one I got off BH, I think SB or something like that).  As of right now I think I am keeping it and not returning it, but that may change as the return window closes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for speech recognition I bought this to use with Dragon speech recognition, not for distance use.  It works fine, every bit as well as much more expensive microphones.  It filters out the noise behind it, which is why I use this type of microphone.  I have compared it with two more expensive shotgun microphones and it sounds just as good and my recognition is just as accurate.
