Oberwerth Kate Reviews
The bag you have been looking for
The reality is that I need variously sized bags for different jobs/excursions. If it's just to go on a trip, I can slip my little mirrorless in any handbag. If it's for a job where I need a flash, 2 - 3 lenses and a laptop, I have a big camera bag. If I'm traveling or need two flashes or to cart around my 70 - 200, then I'll use my rolling camera bag. If I'm hiking, I'll use a knapsack. But I was missing something to carry a body, a lens, a wallet, a phone, a flash and an iPad in a purse that doesn't scream camera bag. And to be honest, I probably need that at least half the time. This is a gorgeous back, beautifully designed. If it were just a purse, I would love it. I love the thick strap, it's easy on the shoulder. I love the way you can leave the purse open, and the insert lid is attached to the side with velcro so it's heard open too, which means I can reach into the purse with out fumbling around with a flap, which is extremely annoying. It's just a very well thought out, high quality, useful and good looking bag. Five stars. It's not cheap, but it's less expensive than keeping on buying a series of quality bags that you don't feel like using because they are not quite what you wanted. I used to be guilty of that. Now, I just buy the best I can afford, because quality is a pleasure to use and it lasts.
My rave, rave, rave review
I have coveted an Oberwerth Kate bag since I first discovered them. But the price—oh the price—was more than I could come at until B&H’s recent reduction and then I swooped. Yes, the Kate is expensive, but I haven’t a single regret. This is one stylish, understated, beautifully made, leather bag that works brilliantly as a camera bag that doesn’t look like a camera bag, and just as well as a shoulder bag for the office or every day. Everything on the uTube review—check it out on the Oberwerth website—stacks up and some. Fully loaded, I comfortably carry an Apple 10.5-inch iPad Pro with a smart keyboard attached in the outside padded, zippered pocket. A newer MacBook Air 13” won’t fit here, but it will in the main body of the bag between the camera insert and the wall of the bag. In the camera insert I carry a Fuji XT3 with an XF35mm 1.4 attached. Next to that an XF56 1.2 stacked back to back (via two rear lens caps I super-glued together) with an XF23 1.4. Together these two do make zipping the insert closed tricky, so I don’t. With the camera insert lid open, there is room for the Fuji EF X500 speedlight or a Godox AD200 pocket flash unit. If I want the security of closing the line, and dont need a flash, I can fit in this space extra batteries, a remote or a wireless trigger, my cleaning kit, and sometimes a tiny, tabletop tripod. Alternatively, I can slip in a Fuji X100F if I want a second camera on board. I can’t believe what fits in this bag and am constantly tempted to overload it! The open internal pockets are generous and the smallest easily fits an iPhone from the 6S to the newer X models. The pen slot takes two pens and the zippered pocket is large enough for a passport. The Kate is sold with two additional leather pouches. Both can be tethered to the inside of the bag for security (or just so they can be easily found) and the smallest works as well for keys as for credit card sized transport passes. The silver hardware adds just enough ‘bling’ for me, but the thing I like the most is the short, soft, contoured, padded leather strap. It’s comfortable, it fits my form and it stays put, which makes a 3kg load a breeze to carry. I chose the Bordeaux Red, but whatever colour catches your eye, the Kate ticks all the boxes. Full marks Oberwerth! Thank you B&H.
