Sachtler 1001B overview

  • 1Description

The Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader is a full tripod system for videographers who use HDSLR cameras and smaller camcorders. Whether you're doing documentaries, ENG, weddings, corporate videos, or any other type of projects with a smaller camera, the Ace M system matches your needs, enabling broadcast-style performance with lightweight components. With its light weight, compact size, and mid-level spreader, this system is perfect for projects that involve multiple setup changes on unpredictable surfaces.

With a payload up to 8.8 lb, the Ace M fluid head features five steps of counterbalance as well as a plate that features a 4.1" range of adjustment, so you can balance your small camera to a very precise degree. Designed by Sachtler engineers for the Ace fluid head system, the SA drag system enables smooth, precise panning and tilting via the head's pan bar, with three grades of drag in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions, plus the option of zero drag. The head's tilt range is +90° to -75°.

The tripod mounts the head via its 75mm bowl. With the Ace M head attached, the two-stage aluminum model reaches a maximum height of 66.5" for a comfortable working height for almost all users. Also included is a mid-level which adds to the stability of the system on any surface, indoors or out.

SA Drag for Perfect Performance
For the Ace fluid head system, Sachtler engineers developed a patented drag, SA (synchronized actuated) drag, which guarantees accuracy and repeatability at a remarkable price. With three vertical and three horizontal grades of drag, SA drag enables fine adjustments for precise panning and tilting. Damping can also be completely deactivated
Lightweight Material
Weighing just 3.7 lb on its own, the Ace M head is composed of a glass fiber-reinforced composite material, which keeps the head especially light and offers a comfortable, non-slip surface feel. The head enables camera operators to work extremely intuitively and professionally – and with the system's light weight and compact size, operators will want to take Ace on the go
Familiar Sachtler Features
The Ace M head reflects Sachtler's 50 years of developing camera support products, which is evident in such practical features as the Ace M camera plate's parking position for spare camera screws and the long 4.1" sliding range. The plate comes with a 1/4"-20 screw and a video pin
Broadcast Feel for Smaller Cameras
With its payload range of 0-8.8 lb, the Ace M fluid head and legs are ideal for smaller HD & HDV camcorders as well as HDSLR cameras. The five-step counterbalance makes it easy to achieve proper balance quickly

Sachtler 1001B reviews

Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 120.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great head, legs however are not durable We bought 7 of these earlier this year after digging around and seeing good reviews on them. The head is fantastic, and we've had zero issues with them. The legs however are simply not durable, where the metal leg sections fit into the plastic, after repeated use they start coming apart. I'm not sure if they were just pressure fit or if they used an adhesive that was too weak but they don't stay together. Of the 7 sets, 4 of them have had sections separate. I'm sending them in for warranty repair.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great head - Sticks OK A great head. I've used the more expensive Satchler heads for years with larger cameras. This with some plastic so maybe not as robust as something three times the cost but has that great Satchler action. As I carry my cameras and support myself for nature work and this is the intended use for this tripod and head, I wasn't as crazy about the sticks. They work fine but for me they were heavy. They also have only two extensions so fold much longer than others I've carried. It would be better if I could have bought just the head or had the choice of carbon fiber. All standard connections though, so conversion switching the head to my old legs was no trouble.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ace tripod - a good tripod? yes and no. I had done some research on this tripod before purchasing it and saw only raves about it being the best tripod for the money. After using it on 4 shoots I can only say the other tripods in this price range must be really bad. The head itself is quite nice and smooth, so I can agree with the reviews I've read. My real complaints are with the tripod, feet and spreader. I have found it to be unsteady at times, the feet are substandard and the spreader has to be unlocked to spread the legs to a wider and steadier stance and even then I have found it difficult to open the spreaders evenly. There are no markings to indicate when each of the 3 sides are even. The sticks ultimately are awkward and not designed for ease of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Tripod for the money! I own and have use many different tripods, for this price range you can't beat the Sachtler Ace M. If you are a professional or know tripods, this is the BEST choice in it's price range, look no further! It has the smoothest head of any tripod in it's price class that I've used, and it is a true fluid head. The drag on both the pan and tilt are a little tight, but then it's not fair to compare it to a multi thousand dollar Sachtler 18 II head which I own, or even their thousand dollar heads, and expect it to be as fluid. If you can afford it, the Sachtler Ace L is better, lighter, has more and smoother drag control, and holds heavier cameras.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid pair of sticks. Great investment. This is ideal for a DSLR shooter that doesn't have their camera in a bigger, heavier rig with lots of accoutrements. (Basicallly, don't overload it or you'll notice.) Really nice pan and tilt action. Much more solid than the Manfrotto H2 or H4 we also own. Has that pro Sachtler feel. It's lighter and doesn't have as 'heavy' or as 'pro' a feeling as our Sachtler Cine DSLR tripod, but it's ideal for many of our shoots. And fairly lightweight. I did put the Canon 305 camera on it to test it out, and it performed fine but not as nimbly as with the DSLR. I would not have bought the Manfrotto H2 if this had come out a few months earlier.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stay away from Sachtler At this point I've had this tripod for about 16 months, and used it on a fair number of jobs, but have always taken care of it. About 6-8 months after purchase one of the glue joints failed. Sachtler's response was to send the tripod back to them to have it repaired, which leaves me without a tripod. At this point it seems like EVERY joint is starting to fail. I'm going to buy a second tripod, because I have to have one, and hopefully Sachtler will repair this piece of junk that they sent me. I really highly cannot stress how poorly I feel as a customer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Broken Leg I used the tripod heavily for just over a year and loved it. Great size and weight. Traveled all over and mostly shooting on a C100. I have both this and the CF Ace L. The fluid head is truly great but I the lower section of the leg fall out. It's a hard piece to repair yourself and customer service was so-so. It's currently being sent in for repair but just thought I'd write a review to let people know. The carbon fiber version is worth the money if you can spare it. much lighter and more durable. super flexible and can be used in many scenarios. nice bag too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great pan, springy tilt I hope I just got a bad unit, but the head has quite a bit of spring back when using the #2 tilt adjustment. I noticed it during a football game and was unable to get rid of it. I also own a Sachtler tripod with the FSB-4 head and it does not have this problem. The pan movement works great, but you can not tilt the camera and then let go of the handle without the head springing up. Another problem I noticed which might be related is that the tilt drag ring is extremely hard to adjust. I am returning this unit for RMA and hope to be able to change my review to match the others on this site.
