ikan VL35 Overview

The VL35 3.5" 4K HDMI On-Camera LCD Monitor from Ikan is a compact field monitor with a native resolution of 800 x 480. This 3.5" display accepts DCI or Ultra HD 4K images and scales them down to the native resolution, producing sharp images. It includes standard features like histogram, false color, peaking, pixel-to-pixel, and frame guides. The pixel-to-pixel feature provides a 1:1-pixel representation of the 4K image captured by the camera.

The VL35's small size makes it suitable for gimbals and lightweight camera systems, especially those without a built-in display screen such as certain sports and action camera models. It features an HDMI input and output as well as a composite input via a 3.5mm connector. It also features a headphone output for audio monitoring and a USB port for firmware updates.

Does this monitor work OK with the BMPCC4k or GH5 ...

Does this monitor work OK with the BMPCC4k or GH5 at 4k 50P or does down res to HD get around this limitation in the specs?

The native resolution of the monitor is 800x480 so it definitely does down-res a 4K signal to show on the display but I have no issues outputting a DCI 4K signal from my GH5s to view on this ikan monitor. I wouldn't rely on it for critical focusing - use your camera's peaking or focus assist functions for that - but it does provide a decent view for framing up shots and monitoring the video signal. I use it with my stabilizers so I have a better view of what I'm shooting than what the screen on the back of the camera is showing, which is often obscured. Very light, quite reliable after about 3 months of use and pretty long-lasting on one battery.

I want to use this with an iPad - when the iPad ...

I want to use this with an iPad - when the iPad is held vertical the images rotates on the iPad. Will this also rotate on the monitor???

That actually depends on the iPad and its capabilities, not the monitor itself. However iPads in general will send out the video through HDMI in the orientation it is currently showing on the screen.

The Kinotehnik loupe that you can find on B&H is a superior loupe and the magnetic bracket it comes with fits the VL35 perfectly.

According to ikan, The VL35 is equipped with Monochrome Peaking features which highlight the desired focus area in a bright, red outline. So monochrome only, on this model.
