Ewa-Marine EM U-A100 Reviews

Poorly Designed

I have been a professional photographer for 30 years and have not had such a terrible product until this one. In the past I used Ikelite hard cases on a Canon system. They were bulky and expensive but...they worked without fail and I never had to worry about the system preventing me from getting the shot. I decided to try this because it folds flat and is light so much easier for the international travel and shoots I do. What a big mistake. The system I used for this is a Sony a7R V with an FE 16-35mm GM lens. On the positive side, getting the camera into this takes fewer steps than an Ikelite and it was waterproof without fail. I used this in several Mexican cenotes as well as pools to test it out. On the negative side: The accordion part that holds the lens is so tight that it literally pushes on the front end of the lens. As I wanted to shoot at 16mm and the lens needs to be fully extended, the case pushed the lens back to about 28mm consistently and sometimes even to 35. As it is virtually impossible to turn the zoom ring while the camera is in the case, it was also difficult to get the lens back to anything close to 16mm by turning the zoom ring. I had to do that by trying to push the front of the lens forward to decompress the accordion. Well, one can't do that successfully with one hand while trying to shoot with the other. Even after returning to the surface, taking the camera out, zooming to 16mm and replacing it into the case, the case once again simply pushed the lens back to at least 28mm. It was highly consistent and incredibly frustrating. It is also a pain to break up a shoot to do this and takes too much time. Later, I swapped the 16-35mm lens with a short pancake 20mm f/2.0 lens. Now the problem was reversed. That lens is so short that I had to compress the accordion so the lens front was near the lens window. So again I had to use one hand to do that while trying to shoot with the other. Next, unlike Ikelite, getting a clear picture by looking at the LCD screen is not easy. With hard cases you don't have to be right behind the LCD screen to see what your picture is in Live View. You can see it clearly even at off angles. But with this case, you have to be squarely behind the camera. I am not sure why this is but in the end I had to estimate framing by simply pointing the camera where I thought it needed to be thus missing several shots. Only pushbuttons work. Jog dials and front/back dials do not work easily if at all. With a lot of work I could sometimes turn the front dial to change aperture but the jog wheel and rear dial were no goes. Even when the dial could be man handled, it was with great difficulty. You finger simply slips on the case and the dial will not turn. The workaround is to use pushbuttons and the 4 buttons on the jog wheel but then you have to know where in the menu the features are you need to change. Even though this glorified bag has a place to insert your finger to hit the shutter button, getting your finger to the right place consistently is harder than it should be. The fit of the case is too tight in certain places on my setup and buoyancy is a definite problem even after squeezing as much air out of it. If one dives deeper this resolves itself; however, at 10' the air floats the rig. So one must compensate with weights or pushing the case down into the water with force. If you are a professional who wants a tool to allow you to easily manipulate controls and focus on getting the shot, then pay the piper and get a hard case. If you are an amateur who just needs a water tight case, can set everything (shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc.) before you go underwater, has a short enough lens so the accordion does not push the lens back, and are not worried about missing shots, then this may be for you. But at that point, the price is ridiculously high for what you are getting and you'd be better off using a GoPro or some other waterproof camera. I know I am being really critical but have used literally hundreds of thousands of dollars of professional gear through the years and this is the worst I've ever come across. It is so bad that I am not even going to try to sell it to some unsuspecting customer on eBay. I had bought this used from eBay but it was evaluated as near new. Now I suspect the former customer tried it, realized his/her error and returned it. I will not take advantage of others. Therefore, I am tossing this $269 item in the garbage where it belongs!

Decent inexpensive housing but with issues

First of all, the package appeared to be missing parts. The instructions describe brackets and the inclusion of rings to fit the end of the lens into the housing. These were not included - there was just one lens ring. So you have to buy your own step up/down rings for your lenses. Good: The wrist attachment works great and its very buoyant. Even with a A7RII and large metal lens, no way this sinks if for some reason it comes off your wrist. The glass cover is crystal clear so it did not add anything to the image. The 'snap-in' attachment holds the lens at the end of the housing well. Not so good: The added layer of plastic interfered with the camera's finder/monitor so the monitor would not stay on. Couldn't change the setting while mid dive as using menu and fn keys and dial was next to impossible. So had to preset exposure settings and hope for the best. I could reliably adjust on/off and aperture/shutter wheels, but not much else - no way to get to the aperture ring on the lens. Bad: It leaked a small amount. It seemed air tight when testing it in the sink/bathtub as suggested by the guide. I was snorkeling with this and the first outting I didnt do any dives with it. Seemed fine. On 2nd outting, I dove down with it to around 15-20 feet. Thats when the pressure forced a small amount of water - a few drops that on the A7RII amounted to rain on a sealed body. So no biggie. However, the issues began when it seemed like the camera was overheating or the sealed nature of the bag pressed to the camera made it so there was no place for the heat to dissipate. This was in 75 degree water in Hawaii... This in turn caused the housing over the lens to start fogging up. There was no way to fix this without taking the camera out, ensuring the interior was completely dry and then adding defogger to the glass like it was goggles. Because its already pretty humid, it was impossible to get it completely clear so I really only got good images on the first snorkel.

It works as advertised

I took it snorkeling with the Sony FX3 just for fun. I didn't have a prime with me so I used the GM16-35. I had to shoot between 20-35mm because the housing just wasn't long enough to support the lens at 16mm with the FX3. I went back out with the A7rIII and it worked fine at 16mm. Cool thing was I was able to mount a small Aputure LED on the top, I used the lens ring that came with it to seal it to the front glass on the housing and there was no glare. Too bad I figured that one out at the end of the day. I'll trust this on a job now. Easy to set up and the little finger indent allowed me to access all my controls. Touch screen did not work. but I don't rule out operator error on that. Also on the FX3 shooting internal 4k, that sucker did get warm but did not over heat after an hour of shooting.

The Ewa-Marine U-A100 is too small for the Nikon D850. The Ewa-Marine U-B 100 is prefect as long as the camera body and lens is not longer than 7.28". The filter thread on the lens has to be 82mm or smaller.

The Nikon D3300 will fit in the Ewa-Marine U-A100 Underwater Housing for DSLRs and Mirrorless Cameras. Make sure the lens on the camera has a 82mm or smaller filter thread. The lens and camera cannot be longer than 6.7". The housing includes the CA82 Adapter and the RA77-82 Step-Up Ring. If your lens has a different size filter thread you will need a different step-up ring. For more help please email [email protected].
