Sony Z9D overview

  • 1Description

View content at four times the resolution of 1080p with the Sony XBR-Z9D-Series 65"-Class 4K Smart LED TV. Lower resolution video sources can be upscaled to near-4K quality and non-HDR content can also be enhanced to near-HDR quality with HDR Remaster technology. This TV has a 64.5" LED-backlit LCD display and incorporates Motionflow 1440 technology to digitally enhance the native 120 Hz panel to reduce the blur commonly associated with fast-moving objects.

The XBR-Z9D has built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity to allow access to your favorite apps and Internet-based content with its Android TV operating system plus content sharing and screen mirroring with your other smart devices such as your smartphone or tablet. With one component video and four HDMI inputs, there are multiple options for connecting high-definition video sources. Three USB ports are also onboard for connecting multimedia peripherals like flash drives.

Discrete LED Control and a Calibrated Beam Design
The Backlight Master Drive can display High Dynamic Range with enhanced black levels and brightness with Discrete LED Control, which uses an algorithm to control the TV's LED structure. Aiding this is its Calibrated Beam Design, which sends light only where it is needed. Each LED emits a straight beam for greater brightness and more accurate contrast.
4K HDR with Near-4K HDR Upscaling
Sony's 4K HDR Processor, the X1 Extreme, is designed to take everything you watch and improve it to near-4K HDR quality. Object-based HDR Remaster technology enhances color and contrast for a more natural and realistic picture. Combined with 4K Ultra HD resolution, HDR video content delivers augmented detail, color, and contrast, with a wider range of brightness than other video formats.
Super Bit Mapping
Super bit mapping, a feature of the X1 Extreme, is designed to reveal thousands of shades and gradations of light to create a smooth, natural picture as you watch, without the "banding" that can occur on non-HDR TVs. 14-bit signal processing recognizes subtle color transitions and effectively smooths out the gradation between shades, to show 64 times the color levels of a non-HDR display.
TRILUMINOS Display Technology
TRILUMINOS Display technology is designed to provide more shades of red, green, and blue to produce vibrant images in every scene.
4K X-Reality PRO Upscales to Near-4K Resolution
Two image improvement databases work together to improve images in real time. 4K X-Reality PRO upscales images to near-4K clarity while a second database cleans the picture and reduces on-screen noise.
Motionflow Digitally Enhances On-Screen Motion
Sony's Motionflow XR 1440 refresh rate technology builds upon the native 120 Hz panel to allow fast-moving action sequences in sports and movies to be seen with enhanced clarity.

    Sony Z9D reviews

    XBR-Z9D-Series 65"-Class 4K Smart LED TV is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice TV I've only had this for a week. I was a bit disappointed with the picture quality at first. After spending some time playing with the advanced settings, it is much better but still nothing like in the store. It seems to struggle with background and moving images. Must have really good quality coming in or it just magnifies the flaws. Once I get used to the transition from plasma to ultra high def. 4K, I may change rating to 5*.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just not worth it I've had this set since the beginning of September and I'm constantly having problems with it. The TV will often become unresponsive and the only solution is to unplug it, wait and replug it in. I've spoken at length with Sony support and they instructed me to update the software but that didn't resolve the issue which keeps coming up every couple of days. If you can deal with the hassle - get this set. If you want something better, get the OLED.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best LED with near OLED blacks 4k and HDR on this TV is something else and no LED comes close to it. I have the oppo 203 with it and UHD movies is so wonderful. I have the Xbox one s and PS4 pro and Gaming on this TV is flawless. SD content looks okay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Last remaining 3D TV you can find - and Dolby Vision too! While this TV doesnt lack a little blooming like an OLED, it does have the deep blacks from the FALD, and you cant find the 2016 OLEDs for 3D any more (except the few used on ebay for $4-6K). If thats important to you, like it is for me, youll be very happy with the 65Z9D, especially with last months $1000 drop (for clearance and Black Friday pricing). Sonys flagship for more than 2 years, and is still regarded as the best TV theyve ever made

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best TV with 3D Support in 2018 I was in the market for a new TV, but all of the newer models do not support 3D. I have a large 3D Blu-ray collection, and I did not want to abandon it. After doing some research, I settled on the Sony XBR-Z9D and I'm really glad that I did. This TV is awesome. I am pretty familiar with the Android TV interface because I am an Nvidia Shield TV owner. Sony's implementation is pretty good. There is some bloatware, but with a quick Google search it's pretty easy to figure out how to disable. The menus are pretty snappy, not as quick at the Shield TV, but still better than most Smart TVs. I'm hoping there is an Oreo (Android 8.0) update sometime in the future. However, this TV is a two-year old model, so I'm not going to hold my breath. The picture quality is fantastic, much better than the LG I had previously (that is now in the bedroom). The blacks are much deeper and the color is much more vibrant than what I am used to. HDR and DolbyVision support on Netflix and Amazon Prime is great. I was a bit concerned about the active 3D glasses because I am used to LG's passive 3D, but they were easy to sync with the TV. The active 3D quality is also much better than passive 3D. It does not have that blur that sometimes occurs when looking at the screen from an angle. The TV only comes with two pairs of active 3D glasses, but I was able to pickup two more on eBay for a reasonable price. I use a receiver for audio, so I don't really have any comments one way or the other on sound quality. Overall, for being a 2016 model in 2018, this is still a great TV. If you are in the market for a new TV, but do not want to sacrifice 3D support, this is your best bet.
