Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Overview

Entering a new realm within the short telephoto lens market, the AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens from Nikon is an incredibly bright portrait-length lens designed for FX-format F-mount DSLRs. The f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over focus for shallow depth of field imagery. Maintaining clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range, the optical design utilizes extra-low dispersion glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, and a Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting in strong lighting. Availing a range of unique possibilities for a telephoto lens, the combination of the 105mm focal length and fast maximum aperture greatly benefit portrait photographers as well as event shooters.

Balancing the optical attributes, the lens is also characterized by a Silent Wave Motor that produces fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus capabilities, along with the ability to manually override focus at any time for more selective control. An electromagnetic diaphragm is also featured for greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Short telephoto prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used on DX models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.
Awesomely fast f/1.4 maximum aperture enables precise control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques, and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are used in the optical construction to reduce a variety of chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Fluorine coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

The most fabulous lens I have ever had. Very tasty and soft bokeh, super-realistic portraits, quite sharp even at 1.6. Just be prepared to run a lot with your legs for amazing shots :))

King of all lenses for bokeh lovers. Sharp even wide open and beautiful colors. Probably the heaviest lens I've ever owned

My new favorite prime lens!

This was my first professional-quality lens, and I love it. This lens gives images a lyrical character, with a soft, gently blurred background. It is extremely sharp wide open, with creamy bokeh and bright colors. So far, I've used it to photograph portraits, landscapes, plants, and even perched birds. It performs well in any conditions - drizzle, low light, scorching hot days. Although it is heavy and a bit slow to focus (even on my D500), it is much smaller, lighter, and more unobtrusive than a 70-200 f/2.8. This is one of the magic lenses you buy for their rendering abilities - it makes you feel that every shot should be deliberate.

VERY NICE

It has the most beautiful bokeh. If you are in the portrait business, this is the best one. I like the compression, it is not too much and your customers will be happy.

I bought this because of the positive reviews, and the speed. I'm not a professional, but I have been taking photographs for over 50 years, starting with a Kodak rangefinder, followed by a Mamiya Sekor 35mm SLR, and etc. I enjoy producing expressive portraits and am currently using a D850, I'm attaching a photo, not to show its considerable sharpness, since it was taken in ambient light at 1/13 second, f1/1.4 and ISO 64. with a tripod on carpeted floor with no weight, not using a remote release, and a breathing cat as a subject. Still pretty sharp, though. I do feel that the photo demonstrates the smooth bokeh, and short depth of field inherent in this lens. Anyway, I like it a lot and am glad I bought it.

Love It!

I love it. Have used the 85mm1.4 for years and decided to pull the trigger on this bad boy. I absolutely love it; my only regret is not having this sooner.

Beautifully. I've used my 105 f1.4 with my Z7 and an adapter extensively for professional portraits and personal use, and I've been really impressed with the level of detail captured.

Does that lens fully work (all apertures) with a SLR Nikon F6?
Asked by: Mathieu
Unfortunately, as the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens uses a new electromagnetic aperture design, you would not be able to adjust the aperture of the lens when connected to the older Nikon F6 35mm Film SLR Camera. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens' aperture can only be controlled when used on the following cameras: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, J5 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

I have read the specs on this and it is not clear what cameras are not compatible with the electromagnetic component. Is a D780 compatible to this lens?
Asked by: Pamela
I can't specifically speak to the D780. It works well on my D750, Df and worked on my D3s. It should be fine on the D780, since the camera came out after the lens.

I have read the compatibility of the lens to the various cameras and the list of cameras that are not compatible to the electromagnetic mechanism is nearly all of the cameras Nikon makes, so is it compatible with a Nikon D780? That isn't even listed!
Asked by: Pamela
Definitely YES! Even with the D750 too! Hope that helps. Noel

question

Will this lens work with a teleconverter?
Asked by: Anonymous
The 105mm f/1.4 will work with a Kenco t/c because the Kenco t/cs have a different construction. ( As with all t/cs ), for best results, you need to stop down a bit. At f/2.0, the 105 f/1.4 plus 1.4 Kenco produces nice images.
