teenage engineering OD-11 overview

  • 1Description

Specifically intended for cloud-based music listening, the red Teenage Engineering OD-11 Wireless Cloud Speaker is a Wi-Fi-enabled wireless speaker that supports streaming from most computers and portable devices. The speaker features a two-way omni-directional design that allows the sound to be dispersed evenly throughout your acoustic space. It features one long-throw 6.5" woofer, one tweeter, and a flow-optimized bass-reflex duct for improved low frequency response. The drivers are powered by an integrated 100-watt Class-D amplifier, and two OD-11s can be linked together wirelessly.

The OD-11 has been built for seamless interaction with your computer or portable device via Wi-Fi, allowing you to to stream music directly to the speaker or to control streaming from a different source, such as a cloud-based service like Spotify Connect. This is made possible using the Orthoplay companion app that is available as a free download from your Apple or Android app stores; it's also available as a browser-based interface for Mac and Windows computers.

Made for AirPlay and Spotify
Thanks to its built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, the OD-11 works out of the box with AirPlay on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. It will also work Windows computers with iTunes installed. When playing music from Spotify on a mobile device, a digital token is sent to OD-11 telling it to handle the streaming so you can turn your mobile device off and enjoy the music. AirPlay allows your device to send a signal via Wi-Fi to your OD-11; the audio stream from your device goes to your home router and then to the OD-11. For Spotify Connect, the OD-11 receives signal directly from the cloud after accessing the music through your smart device.
Apple TV
You can use the OD-11 with Apple TV and all content therein. For the audio, the OD-11 receives the signal wirelessly from the Apple TV, which sends video to your TV via an HDMI cable.
Orthoplay
Orthoplay is the software remote control for OD-11, available both as a dedicated app for iOS and Android and as a universal web application for any platform.
Ortho Engine
Inside OD-11, you'll find the Ortho engine, a custom-designed computer, processing the crossover filtering and all wireless communication.
Analog Class-D Amplifier
Mounted on the side of the bass-reflex duct is the 100-Watt integrated amplifier. By mounting the amplifier on the side of the duct, it's kept cool with the passing airflow.
Ortho-Directional
OD-11 stands for ortho-directional 1+1, meaning it has one tweeter and one woofer. In other words, it's a two-way, ortho-directional loudspeaker.
Wired Connectivity
For devices that can't be set up to play wirelessly, the OD-11 has both line-in and optical-in as options. If you have a stereo pair, no cable is needed between the two OD-11s.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic wireless speaker Usually not a fan of 5-star reviews: something could always be improved, right? In this case, 5 stars is completely justified. Packaging, unboxing, product, experience all exceptional. Lots of AirPlay speakers have spotty performance, but this box is rock solid. Construction and appearance exceeded expectation. Just buy one. Or two. Only point I'd make: the otherwise helpful LED indicator can't be switched off without unplugging the unit, which only matters in a dark bedroom when you're trying to sleep.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic Speaker This speaker both sounds amazing and looks beautiful. It really is flawlessly designed. It boasts incredible bass and clarity while still maintaining a warmth that others have mentioned. You can enjoy this at moderate volumes as well as cranked up. It definitely fills the room with this design, to which the company claims rightfully. AirPlay works perfectly on mobile devices with the Orthoplay app, however, not so much on a MacBook which is why I'll have to give this 4/5 stars. You have to utilize the line in or create a cloud playlist if you want to stream from your MacBook; hence the name: Wireless CLOUD Speaker. I will say that it is extremely cool that you can throw in a mixture of mp3 links for your cloud playlist. Though, if AirPlay works on mobile, shouldn't it work on a laptop? That bit gets me. But hopefully this will be resolved with a later OS update. Regardless, I also have this hooked up to my television through optical in which sounds amazing. I currently have a mono setup, but I personally intend to and would highly recommend buying two of these speakers for a truer stereo setup. Initial setup was tricky as the speaker didn't have the latest update installed causing issues to connect with my Netgear router. I had to setup with an AirPort Express (which Teenage Engineering had told me this speaker was made for intended use with either the Express or AirPort Extreme routers), then update the speaker (which was very easy actually, once connected), and reconfigure the speaker with my Netgear router. A little bit of a hassle, but for me, it was worth it. The only other small gripe I have is that they recommend you turning off the speaker when not in use, but there isn't an on/off switch, so you have to unplug it to do so. Overall, a fantastic speaker that, for the most part, is worth the price tag.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not good with Sonos speakers What I like about these speakers is that you can put them on the floor and point them up. You can put them behind the couch or other furniture and still fill the room with sound. Everyone raves about the sound of these speakers, but when I installed them in my living room, I was a bit disappointed. The sound was not as warm as I remembered from hearing them in a store. It's great that you only have to plug the speakers into a power outlet. You don't need a separate amplifier and you can connect them to the Internet to play music. I was hoping to use them with my existing Sonos speakers by hooking up a Sonos Connect to them, but there was some latency, which created a half second delay. That may not sound like much, but that rendered the speakers useless for my situation.
