Back-Bone Gear MOD3X overview

  • 1Description

This Ribcage 360° Mount from Back-Bone Gear offers multiple ways to mount three separately available GoPro HERO4 cameras for spherical video coverage. The mount supports Ribcage-modified HERO4s in both horizontal and vertical modes and also works with stock HERO4s (vertical mode only). When used vertically, the cameras' output can be stitched together in post to produce near-6K or full-4K video, depending on settings (separate editing system required). Fisheye lenses with at least a 185° field of view are required for 360° coverage with stock HERO4s (vertical mode).

The mount can also be used with the Ribcage Modulus Sensor Housing and sensor extension ribbon to create custom rigs (recommended for advanced users only). Additional features include cable channels to help align the cameras' USB cables and standard 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounting options.

Note: This mount requires user assembly and works only with GoPro HERO4 cameras; lenses and cameras are not included.

    Back-Bone Gear MOD3X reviews

Spherical Mount for Three Ribcage-Modified GoPro HERO4 Cameras is rated 2.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from functional, but awkward design and poor material choices TLDR;Horizontal mode is clunky. Vertical mode doesn't inspire confidence. Next. Horizontal Layout: To remove SD cards, you need to remove cameras from the rig. I do not want to be faffing around doing this on client dime. Vertical Layout: Operationally ports, cards and buttons are not blocked so in *theory* a better design... But... the mounting system is no longer CNC metal but instead two pieces of very pliable (3D printed?) blue plastic holding onto the GoPro with tiny bendy latches. I would not trust mounting this to anything other than a stationary tripod. Car rigs, anywhere shaky ... forget it. The weight of the lens + GoPro easily pops the camera off the rig. Finally, a warning: I also had an issue where I cross-threaded one Ribcage Air faceplate screw hole during my first attempt at mounting a GoPro with a large Entapano 250 lens (the lens partially obscures the screw holes and you need to tilt the hex key at an angle). I should have taken the lens off before putting the mounting bracket on (but as anyone who has tried this knows, getting the Entapano 250 securely onto a GoPro is a bit of pain in the neck and you don't wanna be doing it often).
