Manfrotto BeFree Live Reviews

Works well for my (unusual) use

I only use this head to mount a Snapzoom binocular holder. I like it for holding and aiming my binoculars. Works great for aiming and fixing a binocular in a particular direction. This head's apparent deficiencies that I've read about in the other reviews haven't affected me. The only thing I really don't like about it is that the base is hard to lock on most of tripods I own because the base rotates internally on its fluid bearing. The little tensioning knob at the base seems a little too delicate to really crank on and lock the inner base so as to torque the head onto a tripod. Therefore, while the head pans like is should when rotating the assembly clockwise, the head tents to start unscrewing from the tripod when I try to pan in the counter-clockwise direction. It's a little annoying for me, but it would probably drive a videographer nuts. Maybe I'm using it on the wrong kinds of tripods (one Slik, one Manfrotto).

pretty well made

A Glorified Tripod Head. Nothing more.

I'll be brief. This head is a joke. It's nothing more that a glorified tripod head. No matter what tripod you use, don't expect to achieve any smooth tilt's or pans because it won't happen. It's not worth the $120 I paid for it. I'm sure there are other more solid product out there at the same price point.

Poorly manufactured

The base is shaky, can't hold top firmly, the nob is oddly designed, need to find it to loose or tie it.

It's what I was looking for...

It's small. It's light. It's what I was looking for. I knew it wasn't going to be extremely fluid when it came to tilts and pans, but that's ok. I wanted an ultra-lightweight head for hiking, biking, and shoots when I can get away with the most minimal gear.

DO NOT BUY. GARBAGE.

i brought the first befree live that came with this head. It seemed like the perfect light/travel tripod for my run and gun needs. After just a few months of light use, the tilt knob broke...the metal screw itself broke and is still stuck inside. I was using a 5d mark iv with 24 105 lens. Before that the drag was underwhelming but it seemed like a decent compromise for a small fluid head that fit perfectly in the travel tripod. But it obviously has terrible materials and construction. I kept the legs and bought a MVH 500AH head instead.

Great choice for podcasting

The Manfrotto Befree Live Video Head was a great choice for filming my weekly podcast. I use a Canon SL2 and a Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Aluminum Tripod (which I also purchased from B&H). The Befree Live Video Head moves smoothly and keeps the camera in the exact spot without shifting. Everything works together to give me a great video shoot. Well worth the money

Will either Manfrotto's 200 PL or 200LT PL work on this head? I really want something smaller on my Lumix GH5. Thanks in advance!
Asked by: Martha
They will not, this head uses the 501PL system. Instead you can look at the Manfrotto MHXPRO which is a Pan and Tilt head that uses a 200PL-14 Quick Release plate. https://bhpho.to/2badq6r

Can any other quick release plates work with this head? I would prefer smaller light weight ones for spotting scope and binoculars. Thank you

The Manfrotto 501PL Sliding Quick-Release Plate with 1/4 -20 Screw B&H # MA501PL is the plate that comes with this and is the smallest possible one.

question

does this come with the leveler that you attach between the head and the extension rod?
Asked by: Erick F.
The Pan Bar on the Befree Live Video Head is removable and there is a Bubble Level on the bottom of the head to assist you with balancing the head. However there is no leveling mechanism on the head. You could put this product on top of a Manfrotto 438 Compact Leveling Head before connecting it to a tripod for a ball base leveling system. You could also pair the Befree Live Video Head with the 755XB MDeVe Tripod which has an integrated Half-Ball Leveling System included already.
