Breakthrough Photography X4 overview

  • 1Description

The Breakthrough Photography 67mm X4 UV Filter is a general-use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created, and adjustments to exposure are not required while using this filter. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing 99.4% light transmission, each glass surface includes eight layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with X4 UV filters provides an additional ninth layer over the front MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

This Breakthrough Photography UV filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity and features a thin brass ring that is durable and features knurled sides for easy attachment and removal. It is also weather sealed and useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

    Breakthrough Photography X4 reviews

67mm X4 Brass UV Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great on my Canon 5Ds R I shoot on the coast a lot and I recently noticed a loss in sharpness with my B+W UV filter when compared before/after shots on my new Canon 5Ds R. This company said the X3 UV was the sharpest, so I bought it to see if it was true knowing that I could return it if the claim was untrue, and actually I see sharper results on corner sharpness at 16mm when compared vs. my B+W. I tested the sharpness on my Canon 5D Mark III and didn't see a difference. I think this UV filter may be overkill if you have a lower resolution camera, but if you have a higher MP camera you'll see a discernable difference on corner sharpness if you shoot with UWA lenses. The brass ring on this one is great too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality and sharpness I posted a much longer review for the X2 (77mm) already so here's the short version: These guys are great and so is their product. And the X4 with the extra ribs around the outside makes taking it off and putting it on a breeze. When you're out in the rain or snow (thats why you're buying this right? Weather sealing!) and need to get this on or off it's simple. It's such a stupid little thing that I can't believe no one else seems to do or do well. The X2 has them but not to the extent of the X4. So if you know your hands will be moving slow from the elements or just have issues such as arthritis, the X4 is for you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breakthrough Photography's O filters. Breakthrough Photography and their line of filters are so incredible that I am swapping out all of my B+W filters. The X3 UV really seals my lenses better than UV filter I have ever had in 50 years of photography and their new design doesn't get stuck. They are thinner and have more Nano coatings. Their polarizer beat out my best B+W XS-PRO HTC KSM CPOL NAN. Their ND's are truly neutral in color and the best you will find on earth. They all come with a 25 year warranty. Wish the rest of my gear was made that well :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best ND filter you can buy....period. I'm glad I found this company. Normally I would just purchase a ND filter from one of the old big names in filters, but luckily I discovered Breakthrough Photography. This is simply the best ND filter you can buy. No color cast to the image. No degrading the image quality. Maybe one once, overlooked feature is how the metal ring is constructed. The deep grooves makes it very easy to put on and remove from your lens. in the past, I would often get my ND stuck on top of my protection filter and it would take a great deal of time trying to separate the two. These filters go on and off very smoothly. I can't say enough good things about these ND filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic and worth every penny I've used all sorts of UV filters for my lenses including Tiffen, Hoya, and B+W. The Breakthrough Photography filters are, by far, my favorite of the bunch. They are super well built and the nano coating makes them very easy to clean small smudges. One of my favorite features is the raised/textured sides that make gripping them much easier, should you decide to take them off. Filter has zero issues on sharpness and color shift to your images. I have been so pleased with this filter that they have replaced all the UV's on all of my lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb filter This filter is superbly coated and presents absolutely no flare or reflections, even with bright lights in the background. Colors are true and accurate and I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best just keeps getting better! I have been using UV filters to protect my lenses since my photography teacher told me about them in high school. After ordering a new quality lens (Sony 70-200 f2.8gm) I decided to mate it with quality protection. I must say Breakthrough really made something astounding here, and I'm never turning back. from the moment I put it on my lens, when I went to brush it to make sure it was clean for mounting it felt like the brush hit some sort of invulnerable force field (due to the nano coating). It was like nothing was there but the filter ring. the clarity was beautiful and the anti reflective coating seemed good (both expected here by me). Also this filter is weather sealed and comes with a 25 year guarantee (never heard of either for a lens filter before). After some light use I can tell already this filer is truly top notch. it cleans easier than any filter ive ever cleaned before. Normally only needing a light brushing and no microfiber. I have had no noticeable loss of image quality (though I may take it off for indoor use or night photography). It offers great protection for my lens and i am one very satisfied customer. No I was not paid for this review in any way, and yes I have and will buy more products from Breakthrough in the future.2

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not all UV filters are created equal! I finally decided to take the plunge and pay up for a real UV filter. I spent much less on Hoya filters, and even Breakthrough's X1, but was very disappointed in the quality of the glass. The expression that you get what you pay for is certainly true in this case. Both the Hoya and the X1 appeared cloudy in an uneven way, that was not repairable by cleaning. Both filters were multi-coated and the Breakthrough even claimed Nano. Still, they degraded the transmission of light to the extent that my outdoor pictures taken on a clear "Kodachrome" day appear to be shot in a mildly misty morning. Both the Breakthrough X4 and the similar B+W filter use Shott B270 glass, but the Breakthrough's metal mount has a better grip surface while the thread machining is on par with the best. I've had the opportunity to use Breakthrough's customer service department, and while not terribly quick to return emails, still does what is best for the customer. Save up and purchase Breakthrough Photography's X4 filter. Investing in quality always pays you back.
