Pilotfly Action-1 overview

  • 1Description

Whether handheld or mounted to adventuring equipment, the Pilotfly Action-1 motorized gimbal stabilizer will yield sharper, smoother footage from your Sony Action Camera. Three brushless motors with built-in encoders compensate for sudden vibrations and movement that would cause unpleasant artifacting in your video. The chassis itself is made from CNC-machined aluminum and has a 2-prong joint which is compatible with GoPro standard mounts. This connection enables the gimbal to stabilize vehicle shots, bike shots, and other shots in high-movement scenarios. Standard 1/4"-20 threaded equipment like extension poles can be attached to the base of the handle for expanded composition options.

    Pilotfly Action-1 reviews

    Action-1 is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product so far, will see how it holds up over time. I got this over the Chinese version as I hoped that German quality would show over time. I also liked the ability to take it apart and to use the gimbal on a gopro mount. I've only had it for a short amount of time and have done some basic capture and it works as expected so far. The biggest weakness is that the gimbal was designed to work just for the camera so there are limited balancing capabilities. In order to get center balance, you have to shift the camera all the way to the back of the platform. There is a little room left, but you are at pretty much back 85%. If you want to put the lens protector on, there is no way to balance it as you can't move the camera far enough back. Also, with the camera all the way back, there is very little room to hook up an external mic without interfering with the gimbal. Right now, I will have to tape the door completely open to get it to come close. The nice thing is that the motors seem strong enough to compensate for both the mic and the lens protector, but I question the longevity of the device. I've ordered some 1/8th oz weights to try and fix. I will move the camera forward and place weights on the back to give more room. I will also have to stick weights the outside of the vertical gimbal as well to compensate the weight needed to adjust for and aft. My removal of 1 star so far has to do with Pilotfly not thinking that people will want to use their gimbal with any accessories. It was built to run with the native camera alone, nothing else. I would have appreciated a larger operating envelope. Allow us the ability to put on an accessory and give us the ability to balance natively on the device.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Gimbal. Not So Good Batteries. This gimbal works well. Shots are razor sharp and tripod steady no matter how much my hand jostles the rig and it does so quietly creating little to no noise on the recorded footage. The included case is a good bonus; it's well made and it holds the camera and a few extra batteries. My only complaint is that the batteries don't last as long as I would expect them to. I seem to only get about 25 - to minutes of use when used in periods of 5 to 6 minute intervals. And when the batteries begin to fail the gimbal acts as if it's broken. It bobs, weaves, and makes awful grinding noises until it is shut off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best POV gimbal on the market Normally, I don't write reviews but feel this company needs some credit. I have spent 10's of thousands of $'s on professional brushless gimbal technology and bought this one for fun. I was surprised the level of control. Also, having a Mac, I was able to easily tweak the parameters using the SimpleBG software so that when doing 60mph clips with up to 3G's of force, I could speed each 3 axis (not just roll and pan) of the follow mode. This is critical for going up and down hills because the gimbal resets normal to the vehicles plane not the gravity level, thus you don't have to adjust it for steep inclines or downhill changes that are long. I have had it on a motocross tracks, a Yamaha YXZ side by side at close to 100mph in Moab, flown it on a DJI inspire drone, KTM road racing bike, and the fact that it is detachable... So NICE!! Now add a bluetooth remote control that does time lapse, it is just amazing. Be sure to order the bluetooth remote and well worth $70! I did machine a longer 1/4-20 slot/groove so I could add/balance the protective lens cap Sony sells, and I also run a remote stereo ($19) Sony MIC hidden someplace so I don't get wind noise. BTW, SOOOOOO nice the Sony supports external stereo sound!!! I drilled a hole thru my camera back door for the mic but no big deal. Hands down the Sony X3000 makes the best GoPro look like 5 year old technology, but combined with this gimbal it's really amazing. I really think it's nice that a company supports the Sony X3000 because when you just want some fun clips or in tight spots nothing is worse dealing with low bit rate data, and terrible glass optics as well as NOT having optical stabilized data; all thanks to GoPro Clips. It's also nice they use a interface that if you are an advanced user, you can set up custom parameters, and do it on Mac, not some lame Windows device that crashes all the time. Now, all my non-camera friends think I'm good at what I do, and it's really just a great tool that lets you use a superior (Sony) action cam. For those that really do care about some level of quality in POV action cameras, thanks Pilotfly!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not Work as Advertised, Look at Zhiyun Crane-M Instead Bought this Gimbal to support my Sony AS300 Action Camera with Lens Protector installed. After balancing and setting up many times, I found the PilotFly Action-1 unreliable. Just when you think it's working OK, It would roll the camera to one side or tilt incorrectly. It just does not reliably hold the camera level. The joystick control was not smooth in operation, it just felt like poor quality. Many of these units eventually fail and there is little product support. In fact one of my units does not power on after only 1 hour use. I would certainly give this a miss and go straight to the Zhiyun-Tech Crane-M which supports many different cameras including Sony Action Cameras (with accessories attached). To Add, I feel that the size of this Gimbal is too big considering it is only supporting a small action camera.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Customer and Technical service I had major issues with it right out of the gate. Completely not worth the time, money, headache, and anger this gimbal causes. This review isn't a bad review on the B&H website, it only for the gimbal

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Gimbal Stabilizer! Great little gimbal stabilizer. Due to the large size of file on YouTube, the quality has been reduced, however here is a sample video I took. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3h-Wo5OgeaY

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unreliable for use in the field This is an update of an existing review. I just saw no way to update it. I'm downgrading my 4-star review to 2 stars. My biggest problem is reliability. On 3 of my last 5 outings, I couldn't use the Pilotfly Action-1 cam. I check it at home, everything works. 15 minutes later I get to the trail head and it won't work properly. At first, I thought I found the answer. I turn on the device and it would quick beep, like it had an error. I got it home and unscrewed the battery pack, then put it back together and it worked again. Today, I went back into the field, turned it on and it went inverted. No idea why. I unplugged the battery and put it back nothing. I tried putting it back to as close to level, it went inverted again. I tried click the button 5 times to reset it, didn't work. Nothing I did would get it to work and since my party was waiting, I missed my opportunity again. I get back home, unscrew the camera, turn it on, error as expected, then I put the camera back on, and it works. I just can't figure out it. I paid $200 more for the German version of this device because Pilotfly has a good name and I wanted something reliable. That is why I bought it over the Chinese brand. If I'd had bought the version to work with my A7r2, I'd probably limit my use and could live with the device being a bit finicky and spend the extra time needed to get everything working. However, this is for my action cam. I just want to get to the trailhead, turn it on and go. I don't want to have to baby this thing to death, nor do I want to try and debug a problem every time I go into the field. I hope one day to get it fixed. I don't know if you've ever gone through a German tech support, but the process is not very forgiving. I feel like I'm annoying them. If I get it figured out, I will publish back here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best action Gimbal I have ever used! This has been the most reliable, most accurate gimbal I have ever used, even over my professional gimbal systems. I modified the mounting bracket to let it slide back more and added a little weight to the outside of the tilt motor so I can use the protective lens cover. Which I have now shattered 2 of them! It so awesome to have a gimbal that allows a lens protector but does not need the stupid water proof cage to protect the lens. This gimbal has been attached to a Yamaha YXZ and subjected to dust, mud, and high-speed. It has also been used on road racing bikes at up to 160mph without any problem. It's a dream if you take the time to mount this to a motocross helmet. Best action footage I have ever shot. The time lapse feature works perfect. Also, if you have a slide or linear track, this unit is so easy to program with the hand held remote for on the fly 3 axis video clips, or time lapse. They don't even advertise much it has the option. It works better than a Syrup genie in terms of motion. One thing I would recommend doing is soldering cables into the battery junction so you can run real LipO batteries. However, don't do this on other cheap gimbals that have poor voltage control or you will destroy your LiPo Batteries. This unit has a wonderful voltage control that shuts off and I have never discharged an RC LiPo as a result. I average 9 to 10 hours of aggressive use with a 1000mAh to 1,400 mAh LiPo RC battery at the correct voltage. Again, I can't say enough about the Voltage controller in this gimbal! The small BlueTooth remote controller works well. Also, the main board is a AlexMos-type controller board, so if you have a Mac, it's easy to program and change the up/down or other parameters. This way I can change the rate of return say from a race car to faster for someone on a motocross track. I have built and bought several professional gimbals and I have never had a gimbal last this long, be that smooth, in extreme off-road conditions. Please read cautiously from those that criticize this gimbal, in particular if they don't know how to balance a camera. Another awesome thing this gimbal does, is allow me to drill thru the back of the Sony X3000 and run a low profile microphone that is about 12 feet away, so I can record stereo motor/racing sounds. The gimbal works perfect with the extra audio cable attached. I own 4 of them, different models, they all looked trashed, they all work perfect! I also, don't write reviews very often but I want this company to do well because I'm finding their other products are just as reliable. From my understanding the original product was designed in Germany. Great job PilotFly.
