Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

An advanced one-lens solution, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM is a Canon L-series zoom covering wide-angle to short-telephoto focal lengths and featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. The version II of this popular lens sports a redeveloped optical design, which includes four aspherical elements to significantly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for great sharpness and accurate subject rendering. Individual elements feature an Air Sphere Coating, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy in harsh lighting conditions.

Complementing the refined optics, this 24-105mm f/4 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. A four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
Four glass-molded aspherical elements, including one large-diameter double-sided glass-molded lens, help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
An Air Sphere Coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.

Very nice lens

I have only got to use this canon ef 24-105 f/4 is ll a few times, paired with my canon eos 5d mark lv. But it seems to be sharp. I will really enjoy this when we travel to England. I won't have to pack my big 100-400. Really looking forward to using it more.

Just the lens I've been looking for.

I've been wanting this lens for a long time, I have the earlier version the Canon USM 24-105mm I, and it's a pretty good lens, the USM II is a tad bit better and a little sharper than it's predecessor IMO, I have the USM I on my Canon 80D and the USM II on my 90D. The focal range is an improvement and the sharpness is better, while it may not be stellar overall I love this lens and will gladly use it from portrait to sports this will be my go to lens.

Stabilizer is broken

The lens is fine other than the stabilizer skipping upon opening the box to use it. I bought it for a shoot and will be exchanging it the second I'm back in the city.

I kept thinking it was me....

I had not had a lens of this type before. My previous and only Canon lens was the incredibly good 100-400mm, mark 2. I use two Canon 7D Mk 2 cameras by the way (both telephotos for birds). I've had this 24-105 for several years now. I have put this 24-105 on both of my 7Ds as well as the older 60D. No improvement in focus on any of the three. Currently the 24-105 is on my trusty of 60D, b/c since there was no difference I reckoned I'd keep this crummy lens on my oldest and lowest quality camera. I kept thinking it was me.... As said this is only my second Canon lens and with my love affair with the 100-400 choosing this lens seemed to be a good choice. Wrong. I've read all of the reviews of this 24-105mm telephoto; I've even seen some comments on it when reading reviews of the Canon 24-70mm. Some people think this 24-105 is just great. Really?! They and I must be in some alternative universe from each other. If there are 24-105s that are just wonderful then I really got a dud. I shoot mainly closeups of plants, like less than 18 inches. So this is where I see the lack of sharp focus that this lens provides. I've tried everything, from using a tripod to getting on my belly trying to get a good solid hold on it, in case the problem was my shaky hands. Doesn't matter. This is just not a good lens for sharp focus at close ranges. And, frankly it isn't all that great just shooting landscapes or people. I've found that I have taken to using my 100-400mm to shoot some close-up plant photos by standing off and using the 100mm focal length! It took me a while, longer than the time allowed for returns, to realize that this lens is just really not good at all. Not...at...all, period. I've been looking at replacing it but when I read some of the reviews of the 24-70mm (mk. 2) I see the same sort of negative reviews to a degree not very reassuring to its quality either. Due to the time zone difference between me and New York City, I have not yet found the right time to call B&H and ask to speak with a consultant there who, I hope, can listen to this 'tale of woe' and suggest a Canon lens that I can try next. Perhaps even rent, which is something I've never done.

Great results with the 90D

Recently took this lens paired with the 90D to the Doodad Farm for a day of music and I was very pleased with the results. The 24-105mm makes a great landscape, or just walking about lens. Great overall lens.

I waited for this to arrive, since it was backordered. But it was well worth the wait. Sharp and smooth zooming. And it used the same 77mm filters that I had.

Canon's Go To lens

As far as I'm concerned, Canon's EF 24-105 hits the sweet spot of focal ranges for everyday use as well as being great for landscapes, architecture and a myriad of other subjects. I also use it as one of my main lenses for photographing automobile races. I use this lens far more than any other lens in my kit. I photograph outdoors most of the time, rain or shine, so build quality and weather proofing are extremely important. This L lens is built tough and has the great quality glass I've come to rely on. I used the previous version of this lens extensively for 15 years and this version 2 is even better. The zoom lock is also a great addition. I have both DSLR and mirrorless bodies so the EF lens is the only one that will work on both systems. This lens is a little heavier (a little over 3 oz) than the R version, but the quality and the optics are just as good. I'm looking forward to another 15 years with this exceptionally versatile lens!

Better than before

Bought to replace the 24-105 that I have had for years and have used to take 1000's of photo. Unfortunately, it was broken in an accident. When I got the new one I found it was better than the old one. Love the lens lock, the new hood attachment and the speed of focus. A workhorse piece of a equipment that every Canon shooter should have
