Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

An advanced one-lens solution, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM is a Canon L-series zoom covering wide-angle to short-telephoto focal lengths and featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. The version II of this popular lens sports a redeveloped optical design, which includes four aspherical elements to significantly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for great sharpness and accurate subject rendering. Individual elements feature an Air Sphere Coating, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy in harsh lighting conditions.

Complementing the refined optics, this 24-105mm f/4 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. A four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
Four glass-molded aspherical elements, including one large-diameter double-sided glass-molded lens, help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
An Air Sphere Coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.

As with my original 35-105 FD lens, this replacement EF is fabulous. I just completed a trip around the Highlands of Scotland and this lens afforded me everything that I needed for creating a travel log

I have only got to use this canon ef 24-105 f/4 is ll a few times, paired with my canon eos 5d mark lv. But it seems to be sharp. I will really enjoy this when we travel to England. I won't have to pack my big 100-400. Really looking forward to using it more.

Canon's Go To lens

As far as I'm concerned, Canon's EF 24-105 hits the sweet spot of focal ranges for everyday use as well as being great for landscapes, architecture and a myriad of other subjects. I also use it as one of my main lenses for photographing automobile races. I use this lens far more than any other lens in my kit. I photograph outdoors most of the time, rain or shine, so build quality and weather proofing are extremely important. This L lens is built tough and has the great quality glass I've come to rely on. I used the previous version of this lens extensively for 15 years and this version 2 is even better. The zoom lock is also a great addition. I have both DSLR and mirrorless bodies so the EF lens is the only one that will work on both systems. This lens is a little heavier (a little over 3 oz) than the R version, but the quality and the optics are just as good. I'm looking forward to another 15 years with this exceptionally versatile lens!

Better than before

Bought to replace the 24-105 that I have had for years and have used to take 1000's of photo. Unfortunately, it was broken in an accident. When I got the new one I found it was better than the old one. Love the lens lock, the new hood attachment and the speed of focus. A workhorse piece of a equipment that every Canon shooter should have

Just the lens I've been looking for.

I've been wanting this lens for a long time, I have the earlier version the Canon USM 24-105mm I, and it's a pretty good lens, the USM II is a tad bit better and a little sharper than it's predecessor IMO, I have the USM I on my Canon 80D and the USM II on my 90D. The focal range is an improvement and the sharpness is better, while it may not be stellar overall I love this lens and will gladly use it from portrait to sports this will be my go to lens.

Stabilizer is broken

The lens is fine other than the stabilizer skipping upon opening the box to use it. I bought it for a shoot and will be exchanging it the second I'm back in the city.

I finally gave up on this lens

I'd owned this lens for several years and lived in denial until now. Finally, like a battered wife, I decided I have had enough of this lens. Despite seeing all of the 4 and 5 star reviews, I finally concluded that I simply got a bad copy. I tried everything to get this lens to focus, including shooting in a high f-stop to see if that would help with the focus. Nope. Nothing worked. It was just a crummy lens. So I finally decided to sell it and buy a Sigma 24-70mm. The loss of 35mm of telephoto was not an issue. Getting a lens that actually takes in-focus pictures was and it does. The first few photos I took with my new Sigma made me giggle with delight! Finally, at last, a short telephoto/macro lens that actually delivers sharp photos! I'm beginning to wonder a bit about Canon's quality control.

This Canon 24-105mm is a must-have 'desert island' lens for anyone, no matter how big of an imprint you are running with primes, etc. This lens (like the legendary 17-55mm) is one of those tried and true lenses that just gets the job done, anytime, anywhere.

It should. Just look at the front of your camera. You should have a red and a white index mark. The white is for you're kit lenses. The red is for the "L" Series lenses. This lens is a F/4L.
