Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 AF Overview

By B&H Photo's

Offering a super wide field of view along with an autofocus design, the AF 14mm f/2.8 FE from Rokinon is a prime wide-angle lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Its relatively fast f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions, and its optical design incorporates three aspherical and two low dispersion elements to help reduce distortion and color fringing for improved clarity and sharpness. Additionally, the lens' autofocus motor provides quick and precise focusing performance, and manual focus override is also available for more refined control.

Super wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 21mm equivalent focal length.
Three aspherical elements are incorporated in the optical design to control spherical aberrations for increased clarity and resolution from edge to edge.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and a neutral color balance.
The integrated autofocus motor provides quick, accurate, and precise AF control. Manual focus override is also available for refining your focus position.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 AF Reviews

Wide Prime

I wanted a wide angle prime lens for a full frame 35 mm camera. The images are clear and I'm learning to stay low in landscapes to control the distortion for more depth and pleasing images. Yes, rules are made to be broken.

Edges too soft

I tried this lens on a Nikon D850. Mine was the Rokinon version but the same lens comes in a Samyang version. Before this I had a Tamron 15-30 f2.8 G2 which was great except it was big and heavy. In use it was fine but it was too much to carry for travel with my other lenses, so I got this because it is small and light and had good reviews. The center sharpness is fine but the edges were unacceptable for my use (and I was stopped down, not wide open in my tests). If you do shoot wide open be aware the vignetting is severe - worse I have seen. Since I want it for landscape and architecture, the blurry right and left side were unacceptable. I don't just mean the corners, I mean the entire right and left side (right side a bit more) from top to bottom, going well into the frame (10-15%). I really wanted this to work as a lightweight alternative, but it won't work for my needs (making large prints with good detail). If you are photographing things that fill the center up close and letting the background go naturally out of focus, then it would be fine. Thankfully BH has a no hassle return policy, as I sent it back today after two days of testing.

Really very good

At first I was a little concerned that it wasn't sharp enough. But I kept with it, and learned its peculiarities. So after a few days I started to get really sharp images. I'm not sure why...I would have thought that the wider the lens the easier to get sharp images...but there you go. I just used it for a pro photoshoot (even coverage), and the images came out very nice. There are still moments when I feel that I'm getting dull images..the lens doesn't give me that "magic" feel. But it's also not an expensive wide angle. So it does what I need it to. Maybe some day I'll spring for an expensive wide angle.

GREAT LENS

I bought this lens for Canon EF mount. I also have Fringer EF-FX Pro II adapter. The lens produces great results on both Canon and Fuji XT1 and XT2. Time to take this baby to shoot some landscapes of Arizona!

Love it

Rokinon has refused to fix major flaw in this lens for years

By Paul

Huge flaw of this lens is that Rokinon stubbornly refuses to fix a gigantic bug, easy to address but they don't care, after getting nagged for years. This lens will not communicate the 14mm focal length over to your camera, even though it's an AF/active-mount lens. So for SteadyShot to work, and for EXIF data to populate correctly (for loading lens profiles, etc.), you have to spend wasteful/priceless minutes probably missing your shot, digging into the menus to manually set it, and then (remember to) switch back to automatic focal length recognition when you swap out the lens.

Wide Angle Lens with Good Edge Resolution

Great medium-priced lens. It has a solid, well-built feel, weather protecting features, a slightly larger FOV than other 14mm lenses and good edge resolution compared to more expensive lenses. The corners do have a slight vignetting but still acceptable in my opinion.

question

So a mattebox is the only option for this lens to use ND filter?
Asked by: Kevin
If you can find a gel that meets your ND needs, there is a gel holder on the rear of the lens. Looks like it will require cutting two rounded corners on the gel.

question

does it transfer exif info to the camera?
Asked by: vikas c.
When on a EOS R or EOS R5 full EXIF data is provided and the lens is recognized as Rokinon 14mm on the camera display. In some editors the EXIF line for lens type just states: "14 mm Lens" but in some (Affinity Photo) it's listed as "Canon EF 14 mm". Apparently all editors don't convert the coded EXIF file correctly.

Does this lens need the update to work with the sony A7III? It costs extra to buy the lens station to update the lens.
Asked by: Nick
Times were when cameras used springs to power the shutter and the lens had to be manually focused. Nowadays with electronically controlled cameras, occasionally the camera or lens needs adjustment or repair. Some of that adjustment can now be done in the convenience of your home often saving the time and expense of sending the device to a camera repair. Cameras and lenses are sent to B&H with the latest adjustments and firmware. However changes can happen anytime, even during the time we ship the item to you. Therefore, sometimes an adjustment will require the Rokinon Lens Station. Because of the high turnover of the inventory at B&H, we feel it unlikely your lens will need extra care. If it does, and you have saved the packaging and it is within 30 days of purchase, you can contact the B&H Customer Service Department to inquire regarding a return or exchange. If beyond 30 days, you can purchase the Lens Station from Rokinon. https://bit.ly/2zyTclL

question

I have the old 14mm and always have a problem with elongated stars to the upper right when capturing Milky Way even at 300 rule. How does this one perform?
Asked by: Edwin
They redesigned the lens for this version. It should be better than the older manual focus version. Coma will still be present but it is well contained.

question

Does anyone have any sample shots? How does this compare to your typical .3X deathlens used to film skateboarding?
Asked by: James
Rokinon, the high end line of affordable lenses made by Samyang as always been considered a maker of good lenses at a remarkable price. We have no doubt the image will be very good and the lens a great value. The FOV or Field of View should be a tad less than the Schneider .3X Ultra Fisheye Adapter if looked at on the same camera.
