Marantz Professional PMD-561 overview

  • 1Description

The PMD561 from Marantz Professional is a portable audio recorder designed for professional uses such as recording in the field, conducting interviews, or digitizing material played through a stereo receiver. Recording directly to SD and SDHC cards, the unit sports two combination XLR / 1/4" inputs for microphone and line-level signals, offering you 48V phantom power for the microphone inputs should you choose to use condenser microphones.

A stereo 3.5mm line input, used in conjunction with the included 3.5mm to RCA adapter cable, provides you the opportunity to input audio from a receiver or an amplifier. Should you wish to connect digital audio, the PMD561 boasts an RCA S/PDIF input.

Playback options abound as well, with a 1/4" input for pro-audio headphones and dual RCA outputs to route signal to receiver equipment. Transferring your audio to computers can be accomplished via USB and while utilizing the included USB cable. This unit can record in MP3 formats up to 320 kbps, and in WAV formats up to 24-bit/96 kHz. With four AA batteries, the recorder lasts up to seven hours.

    Marantz Professional PMD-561 reviews

PMD561 Professional Portable Audio Recorder is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tony D. For what I am using it for it is great. I like the big display and the fact that it has two level meters, the lights on the bottom of the screen and also on the screen by pushing the display button, which like all the others, are big and well defined. Great sound. Even though I gave it 5 stars, there however are 2 small negatives. One no carry strap to hook up with the recorder included. Two, unlike the old Marantz tape recorders, of which I happen to own one, rechargeable batteries cannot be charged in the unit. You have to remove them and use a separate charger. Other than that, great machine.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good machine-BUT the programmer doesn't understand users The good, the variety of inputs-. The BAD, you have to modify presets to use them! Example, you are configured for internal mikes, I would expect the unit would sense plugging in an XLR or (Line in 1/8) connector and automaticlly switch. -Wrong- . For my stations Preset 1 is internal mike. Preset 2 same record settings, but choosing XLR input. Preset 3 High quality split channels with XLR. Preset 4 ( OH WAIT you have only 3 presets) . . FURTHER- You can mute the speakers ( presume in Record) Again NO. Mute should be called OFF. Off in Record and OFF in Playback too!! Not good. If you are,or have technically inclined users my comments are a pain if your in a hurry ( Radio News), but for the challenged users this will be a significant issue. Otherwise it is the quality you've always known. Bottom Line - I only am using this because of a request by a very challenged user. Three presets are a best case scenario...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from dropout between tracks There are so many things I like about this digital recorder that it pains me to have to return it. I was planning to use it to tape delay specialty radio shows (such as The Metropolitan Opera broadcasts). These programs can run 4 hours or more, but I almost never sit through it in one sitting. So I set it to auto track every 10 minutes to allow me to easily find the part where I was up to when I last had to stop it (once you turn the power off, or record another file, it jumps back to the beginning). Unfortunately, when transitioning from one track to the next one, there's a split-second dropout - enough to disrupt the flow of the music. That's a non-starter for me. This phenomenon does not occur with other digital formats that I've used, including CDR's & DVD's. Don't know why it happens with this device. The manual suggests trying higher speed SD cards - didn't help and Marantz couldn't help me either. Too bad.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Recording and Playback volumes are too low I am returning this product. The recording volume level has to be set at the highest possible level to pick up voices. The playback speaker volume also has to be set to the highest possible level and it is still low level. Could be a problem with just this unit. We have older Marantz recorders similar to this one that have worked great for years and years. I guess we will be looking for an alternative recorder as replacements.
