Profoto D2 500 AirTTL Overview

By B&H Photo's
Fast, Wide Power Range, TTL, and Wireless Connection
This light checks every box on a photographer's wish list—a 0.6 second recycling time at full power, a 10-stop a power range, Freeze Mode, and a 300W modeling lamp. Folks, here's the Profoto D2 500Ws AirTTL Monolight.
Shoot Faster and Easier Using TTL
The D2 shortens your shooting time with on-board TTL compatibility. Pros who formerly turned their noses up at the term "point-and-shoot" as amateurish will learn to love this technology. Simply set your lights up, set the camera to TTL and shoot. The first shot is nearly always a keeper. The key to this control is the optional Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Operating on 2.4 GHz bandwidth, the wireless transmitter, which is really a controller, has 8 frequency channels with 6 groups and a range of up to 330' for TTL triggering and 1000' for normal triggering. Each channel has power ratio capability of +/- 2 stops. If you prefer to use manual, you have 10 stops of power variation.
Overpower Any Light
The D2 packs enough punch to overpower the available light in almost any situation. Its power is also an advantage when shooting at longer distances or when using larger light shaping tools. Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000 of a second. Use HSS to shoot with a wide aperture in bright conditions or to freeze action with absolute sharpness.
Freeze the Moment
The good news for special effects photographers and sports shooters is that the D2 can shoot bursts of 20 flashes per second, so you're sure to capture peak action or several versions of it. In addition, the D2 also supports High Speed Sync up to 1/8000 of a second for photographers who want to stop action or use wide apertures with full ambient light control. The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That's fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump, and you'll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.
Advanced Smartphone Apps
The D2 also features an enhanced, intuitive LCD screen display, as well as full compatibility with Profoto Control and Profoto Camera apps, making your life much easier by streamlining the lighting process through your iPhone or Android device. Modeling Light, Ready Indicator, Mode, Sync, Channel, and Group are easily selected through the Settings button. The display even flips around the way your iPhone does in case you're working with the head upside down or hanging it overhead.
Use it Anywhere
The D2 has a self-seeking multi-voltage (100-240) power supply for worldwide use, too. Profoto has covered so many features on the photographer's wish list that you'll wonder what they can come up with next.

I have the D1 Air 500. The power cord often comes a little loose, causing me to lose power, especially when I have the strobe in almost vertical position. I've tried taping the cord in place, but it still comes loose. Does anyone else have this problem? I wonder if this right angle type of plug would help. Might be easier to secure with tape. It's so much cheaper than the Profoto cord, but I assume it would work just as well, right? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/917037-REG/c2g_27909_10_18_awg_universal.html

Thank you, Reuben, for steering me away from the lightweight cable. I had been looking for one with a right angle plug, that's why I was considering that one. I see now that with the Profoto power cord, if I loop the cord through the handle on the strobe and tape it there, the plug does not come out when I reposition strobe.

question

will the Profoto D2 Hyper sync with my Pentax 645 Z ?
Asked by: Gerardo E.
Hypersync would be a feature available on the Pocket Wizard Mini and Flex system, which is only compatible with Canon or Nikon cameras. The same would apply for the Profoto Air TTL-C and TTL-N transmitters which also work only with Canon or Nikon and which uses high speed sync.

Being that the Profoto D2 has a 300 watt halogen modeling lamp is it not recommended for use with the Profoto OCF series modifiers due to a issue with heat.
