Having wowed us with the introduction of the battery-powered TTL B1 and B2 flash heads, Profoto does it again with the AC powered D2 1000 AirTTL Monolight. Building on the foundation of the popular D1, this light maxes-out the D1 performance specs while adding wireless TTL from the B1 and B2. With the D2, "speed" is the operative word.

The D2 1000 recycles to full power in 1.2 seconds, almost half the time as the D1 1000, and in Freeze Mode, achieves flash durations as short as 1/50,000 of a second, outperforming most studio pack systems. That's good news for special effects photographers and sports shooters. It can also shoot bursts of 20 flashes per second so you're sure to capture peak action or several versions of it. In addition, the D2 also supports High Speed Sync up to 1/8000 of a second for photographers who want to stop action or use wide apertures with full ambient light control. The 10-stop power range gives ample choices to achieve your objective.

Catch the Moment
The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That's fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump, and you'll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.
Freeze the Moment
The D2 1000 can provide super quick flash durations up to 1/50,000 of a second. Shoot a splash of water, and it will be frozen in midair.
Shoot with Ease Using TTL
Point-and-shoot in TTL Mode using the separately purchased Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Switch to Manual Mode and control the light with intuitive buttons and menus.
Overpower Any Light

Control Your Surroundings

It is a 300w tungsten modeling light. It can get very hot. Part of it will depend on the temperature in you shooting environment, the overall space, airflow and air conditioning.

The Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight uses a standard 1/8" (3.5 mm) sync terminal on the monollight light fixture. The sync input is located on the bottom of the unit as pictured on page 9 of the Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight's included instruction manual (labeled as #14 in the image). If you are looking for a recommendation, the Profoto Sync Cable for D1 Monolight, B&H # PRSCD1, or the Impact Sync Cord Male Mini (3.5mm) to Male PC (16'), B&H # IMMMPCM16, would both be compatible for your usage needs.

Can the Profoto D2 1000 Air TTL be connected to an external power pack, and if so what type?

The Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight is designed for AC power usage. If you wish to use the strobe on location, you would need to purchase a power inverter strong enough to handle the above strobe. As a recommendation, I would recommend either the Photogenic Ion Lithium-ion Pure Sine Wave Inverter System, B&H # PHION, which should give you approximately 360 flashes per charge with approximately 7.5 second recycling time, or the Hensel Power Max L Lithium Mobile Power Supply (120VAC), B&H # HEPML120, which should give you approximately 220 flashes on a single charge with the recycling time 50% longer than your current recycling time when plugged into a standard AC household outlet.

I've always wondered how the TTL in Profoto heads have any idea how much light to produce. From my understanding, the TTL information is coming from the camera's computer using light coming Through The Lens. So, that information is correct for the distance of the camera sensor to the subject. But, the camera's computer doesn't know where the Profoto head is located. If the head is the same distance to subject as the camera sensor, then it should be accurate, but if the light is further away, the result should be incorrect on the dark side, and conversely , if the head is closer to the subject, it should overexpose, all using the same TTL information.My question for speed is, at what wattage per second is the D2 achieving 1/63,000 sec (500 W/S model), or 1/50,000 sec (1000 W/S model)?With my B1's, if I need fast flash speed, I sometimes need to gang up 2-4 heads to keep my light output at a usable level. I would love it if the flash was controlled to actually cut off at the faster time, without a light tail. That technology would enable higher output while maintaining the short flash duration. If the D2 has the ability to hit a fast flash duration while at full power, I would add it to my studio immediately.

According to Profotos specifications for the D2, the 500 AirTTL unit has a flash duration of 1/63,000s at 1 watt/sec and while the 1000 AirTTL unit has a flash duration of 1/50,000 at 2 watts/sec. Both of these measurements are applicable when the monolights are set to freeze mode.

To sync, can I use the radioflash from other brands or only Profoto?

Using the Profoto air remote would be the most useful as the D2 has a Profoto receiver built into the head. However if you wanted to use a different transmitter and receiver, you could as there is a 3.5mm sync port on the D2.
