Profoto D2 1000 AirTTL Overview

By B&H Photo's

With the D2 Duo 1000/1000 AirTTL 2-Light Kit, Profoto offers two advanced high-performance 1000Ws monolights with power cords and a padded case. At 0.03-1.2 sec, the D2 is almost twice as fast as its predecessor and capable of 20 flash per second bursts. Other features include wireless TTL with the separately purchased Air Remote TTL-C for Canon and TTL-N for Nikon, compatibility with Profoto Control and Profoto Camera apps , action-freezing flash durations and High Speed Sync support up to 1/8000 sec.

Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight

Having wowed us with the introduction of the battery-powered TTL B1 and B2 flash heads, Profoto does it again with the AC powered D2 1000 AirTTL Monolight. Building on the foundation of the popular D1, this light maxes-out the D1 performance specs while adding wireless TTL from the B1 and B2. With the D2, "speed" is the operative word.

The D2 1000 recycles to full power in 1.2 seconds, almost half the time as the D1 1000, and in Freeze Mode, achieves flash durations as short as 1/50,000 of a second, outperforming most studio pack systems. That's good news for special effects photographers and sports shooters. It can also shoot bursts of 20 flashes per second so you're sure to capture peak action or several versions of it. In addition, the D2 also supports High Speed Sync up to 1/8000 of a second for photographers who want to stop action or use wide apertures with full ambient light control. The 10-stop power range gives ample choices to achieve your objective.

Besides super-fast operation, the D2 shortens your shooting time with on-board TTL compatibility. Pros who formerly turned their noses up at the term "point-and-shoot" as amateurish will learn to love this technology. Simply set your lights up, set the camera to TTL and shoot. The first shot is nearly always a keeper. The key to this control is the optional Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Operating on 2.4 GHz bandwidth, the wireless transmitter, really a controller, has 8 frequency channels and with 6 groups and a range of up to 330' for TTL triggering and 1000' for normal triggering. Each channel has power ratio capability of +/- 2 stops. If you prefer to use manual, you have 10 stops of power variation.

The D2 also features an enhanced, intuitive LCD screen display as well as compatibility with Profoto Camera and Profoto Control apps. Modeling Light, Ready Indicator, Mode, Sync, Channel, and Group are easily selected through the Settings button. The display even flips around the way your iPhone does in case you're working with the head upside down or hanging it overhead. The D2 has a self-seeking multi-voltage (100-240) power supply for worldwide use, too. Profoto has covered so many features on the photographers wish list that you'll wonder what they can come up with next.

Catch the Moment

The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That's fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump, and you'll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.

Freeze the Moment

The D2 1000 can provide super quick flash durations up to 1/50,000 of a second. Shoot a splash of water, and it will be frozen in midair.

Shoot with Ease Using TTL

Point-and-shoot in TTL Mode using the separately purchased Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Switch to Manual Mode and control the light with intuitive buttons and menus.

Overpower Any Light

The D2 packs enough punch to overpower the available light in almost any situation. Its power is also an advantage when shooting at longer distances or when using larger light shaping tools.

Control Your Surroundings

Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000 of a second. Use HSS to shoot with a wide aperture in bright conditions or to freeze action with absolute sharpness.

Profoto Bag S Plus for D2 Monolight

The Bag S Plus for D2 Monolight from Profoto is a padded nylon carry case with zippered closure, touch-fastener joining handles, and a removable shoulder strap. It fits three D2 heads horizontally, or two D2 heads with domes and protective caps.

Profoto D2 1000 AirTTL Reviews

Love these lights

I've used these lights before, and finally purchased my own. They've been great to travel with, and are super intuitive. I've been using the air remote with them, and it's been seamless. The case is great, although I will likely get a hardcase if I'm traveling with them.

Poor build quality on multiple orders

I'm a long time Profoto user and the build quality on these lights does not live up to what I thought of as the Profoto standard. I've ordered 3 of these kits and I've had to send back 2 of them for defects right out of the box. My first kit I bought a few years ago is great and works as expected. However trying to buy another kit has been a disappointment. Out of the box, one kit had a head that wouldn't fire. I returned it and tried ordering again. I just received the new kit and the handles on each head is cracked in half. I didn't bother testing the heads. I packed them up and I'm sending them back again. I know these aren't as robustly built as the Pro Heads, but still - it's Profoto, you'd think they'd at least be functional out of the box. After dealing with this twice, I'm definitely considering switching to Broncolor.

WORTH IT

You may be wondering if the sizable investment into these lights is worth it. While I can't answer that for you, for me it was absolutely worth it. The build quality is second to none. They FEEL solid. They perform as you would expect strobes in this price point to perform. They are incredibly fast. The recycle time is enough to make a grown man cry in delight. Your bank account will suffer. But your creative freedom will fly.

The D2 is a worthwhile improvement over the D1.

Best in it's class

It's relatively portable for the power output. There's nothing near this portability with this power out. Battery pack strobes are not practical when you want larger distances between the strobes. It's pretty robust. LED modelling light would be nice if it was 5600k instead of a warm modelling light. Power cable is super smooth and coils up easy. I use it mainly bouncing off walls, f8 , iso 50, so the full power comes in hand. I use the Profoto TTL trigger and never misses a fire. Light is very consistent K value. Wish list for future - smaller physical size, lighter, adjustable tone for modelling light. I have had to change the motherboard after burn out after 2 yrs of use.

The go to for strobe

In my profession, all I use is profoto but the D2 stepped it up from the D1's. Hope for LED model lights in the future. Reliability is key here.

A great light. I use these in a school auditorium to photograph award presentations and play rehearsals. It provides superior light to the lights in the auditorium.

Blown away by the quality

I've been using another brand of strobe lights for the last 5 years and they're great, nothing bad to say about quality for the price I paid but I'm blown away by Profoto and so happy I finally upgraded. It costs a lot, especially when you need several heads, but it's worth it. The recycling rate, the quality of the light and capabilities and solid design is incredible. I'm in love with my new profoto lights!! Can't wait to try the freeze action!

Which reflectors, barn doors, and grids fit this model?

As far as I know, all standard Profoto accessories that fit the standard heads. I have d2s and an Acute 1200 watt pack with two heads and I've rented the 2400 watt packs many times. They all take the same reflectors etc.

question

What is the most common way to power these on location?
Asked by: Josh J.
Not sure if you can power the D2 1000 with the Batpac in HSS. The flash power in HSS will not go below 6.0 which consumes battery power at a rapid rate. In a test, I was only able to get a few shots and then the flash would shut off. Then, I tried using a 2000 watt generator and the first shot was the only shot with the proper flash output. After shooting about 20 shots the generator completely shut off. I repeated the experiment and the generator shut off again around the same number of frames. Very disappointed that I can not lower the power output below 6.0.

question

Profoto specifications for the D2 1000ws model indicate that in HSS mode, the flash will maintain accurate color and fire from 10/10 power down to 6/10 power (for Canon). Most strobes in HSS lose about 2 stops of total output some more. Can you estimate what the max output is when using high Speed Sync? I asked Profoto and didnt receive an answer. Im wondering if 10/10 power is HSS is equivalent to an output of 250 ws for the D2 1000ws. James provided feedback indicating his ability to essential match sunny f16 lighting conditions firing at 1/8000 sec shutter speed at f2.8. Thats a pretty good indication of greater than 200ws depending on the modifier used. Any additional feedback on the power capacity in HSS mode would be greatly appreciated.
Asked by: Thomas
As per Profoto, a D2 1000 AirTTL monolight would give you a max output of 1000 watt/sec when using high speed sync.

question

I want to purchase a spare modeling light bulb (not strobe tube) for the Profoto D2 1000 AirTTL Monolight. What exact bulb does this monolight require? Perhaps someone can send me a link to purchase the bulb? Thanks friends!- Chris
Asked by: Chris
The Eiko DRA Lamp (300W/120V), B&H # EI64514, or the Hensel Modeling Lamp for Integra Monolights - 300 Watts/120 Volts, B&H # HEMLI, would work as a modeling lamp for use in the Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight.
