Kirk BL-D7100N overview

  • 1Description

This BL-D7100N L-Bracket for Nikon D7100/D7200 from Kirk Enterprises is an Arca-type compatible bracket machined from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. Meticulously designed, it enables fast changes between portrait and landscape orientation while maintaining access to your cameras valuable connection ports and battery compartment.

The concept of the L-bracket removes the need to re-adjust your tripod head and completely recompose for different shots. The user can simply release the bracket from nearly any Arca-type compatible quick release clamp, tilt it 90°, and lock the bracket back in place. During re-adjustment, precise positioning is maintained by aligning both your camera and clamp with the centering lines engraved into the L-bracket's base and side. Using an L-bracket also facilitates a sturdier base of support than tilting an entire head to a 90° position and puts less strain on your support gear.

For camera attachment the plate features a captive 1/4"-20 stainless steel mounting screw—an adjacent 1/4"-20 socket is also included for directly mounting the bracket without an Arca-type clamp. The base of the bracket also includes an integrated hand strap loop for those who use a hand strap which requires use of the camera's tripod socket.

The "N" series of Kirk L-Brackets, much like their predecessors, are constructed of two separate parts—a base plate and side-arm—which appear detachable in the images above. It is important to note that the screws attaching the vertical side-arm to the base plate are not removable and thus, the L-Bracket may not be disassembled.

    Kirk BL-D7100N reviews

    BL-D7100N L-Bracket for Nikon D7100/D7200 is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits and functions perfectly I bought this for my D7100 for more efficient changes from horizontal to vertical orientation. The Kirk bracket fits the camera perfectly, and the mount exactly fits the ball head on my Gitzo tripod. Changing from horizontal to vertical is just as easy as it should be. Can't ask for more.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Depends on how much you want a custom fit bracket Yes, it's a custom fit L bracket that's vastly over priced. The centering (alignment) marks are the same color as the bracket itself (hard to see). Other than that......

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost a complete L Bracket. I had high hopes for the Kirk BL-D7100N. It's almost a complete product. First off THE PROS: it fits the D7200 like a glove. It allows use of the Nikon remote release DC-2 while in vertical position. And you can screw in a camera strap to the plate. THE CONS: It doesn't fit all Arca Swiss Plates or ball heads. There is no safety catch while in vertical position. The plate is very thick so it will not work with the safety catches on some ball heads like the 3LT Ah2. And because the bottom of the plates are thick, it takes about one full turn of the lock down knob to remove the plate from the ball head. The vertical plate that's held down by 2 screws into the horizontal plate shifts under pressure. And the Bracket has sensor groves, but they are not painted. Nevertheless, the attached photos show some of the mods I did to make the L Bracket work. I screwed in a 1/4x20x1/2 button head screw into the Nodal Rail for a safety stop because there are no holes in the L bracket to screw in safety screws for the vertical position. To mount the plate in horizontal position, I ground off some of the center material of the L bracket. To make this fit on the 3LT Ah2, I filed off some material so the safety catch on the Ah2 would fit. And, I filed off the finish of the sensor grooves, and whiteout the grooves for easy viewing. Thus, I rate this product a 3 because of the mods needed to make this L bracket a complete product. I've used a Sunwayfoto universal L bracket for over 2 years on a D7100 without the need to mod it, and it fits all my Arca Swiss plates without need for hacks. The only things it lacked that the Kirk has is the sensor markers and the ability to plug in the DC-2 remote. Thus, only benefit of the BL-D7100N is, it's designed to fit the D7100 and D7200, and you can plug in a remote while in vertical position. But it struggles to fit well with all ball heads, and lacks the safety features in vertical position. For the price a good quality Universal L bracket like Sunwayfotos' would out preform this one, without the need for hacks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should have purchased long ago! As my school and sport portrait work increased, I was always so concerned about the camera hanging on the side of the tripod to shoot in portrait orientation. But who wants to spend over $100 for a piece of metal. I finally broke down and ordered this and I couldn't be happier with it. Like anyone, I compared it to the RRS L bracket. I chose the Kirk because it had more of a rounded attachment point for my Peak Design anchor loops. I love my peak design clutch and straps! The RRS plate had more of a square cutout which seemed to have more potential to fray the Peak Design anchors. This Kirk plate is rock solid and serves the purpose well. It is Sooooo much more secure on tripod and quick and easy to swap. The downside is that it is added weight and chunk if you are handholding and not particularly comfortable for that purpose. So far it hasn't bothered me so much to actually remove it but if I were handholding for an extended period of time, I am sure I would swap it off quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flawless My tripod may have changed but my Kirk L Bracket never will. I went from an inexpensive Promaster tripod to the 3 Legged Thing Albert. Both having arca swiss style ball heads the connection with my D7100 is FLAWLESS. The only time I take it off is for a tighter connection when I use my Blackrapid strap although there is a screw mount on the Kirk I could use for that it lack a bit of surface area to grip the gasket to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great! Works perfectly, as described. Built tough and looks nice. I leave this on my D7100, so I can easily mount it in onto my tripod in either horizontal or vertical orientation in seconds. Recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would but this bracket again. I have Kirk brackets on my other cameras. They build a fine product.
