Drobo 5Dt overview

  • 1Description

This B&H Kit comes with the Drobo 5Dt 5-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Enclosure and five 4TB NAS hard drives to provide you with a Direct Attach Storage (DAS) solution. The included 4TB hard drives are designed to run 24x7 and provide a total capacity of 20TB. Once installed into the 5Dt's bays, you can configure these drives in a RAID array utilizing Drobo's BeyondRAID technology. In addition, the 5Dt (Turbo) edition is outfitted with a Drobo accelerator bay that sports an mSATA card for increased performance of up to 30% on streaming video and 3x read performance.

To keep up with the drive's enhanced performance, Drobo has equipped this enclosure with two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which provide daisy-chaining support as well as up to 20 Gb/s bi-directional data transfer speeds. Moreover, there is one USB 3.0 port for greater connectivity options with non-Thunderbolt systems.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from They don't replace failed drives replaced under warranty Knock on wood, things have been ok, other than one failed drive after about two years. However, you'll never get it replaced under warranty. I had the HGST 4TB set with 3 year warranty, but HGST won't cover it, nor B&H. Drobo said they would, but after three weeks of back and forth corporate said they won't. Buy your own drives, otherwise warranty won't cover it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Large, fast, and safe storage for professional workflow I've been using the Drobo 5D at work (as a professional video editor for a major outdoor clothing company), primarily as a work-in-progress mass storage device. After more than a year of positive experiences with it, I decided to upgrade my system at home to include the 5Dt. So far I have not been disappointed. I use it attached to a maxed out iMac, serving as storage for all of my raw photo and video assets. I've been editing 4k footage in Premiere Pro directly off the drobo with success. At times playback can slightly lag, but I'd guess that it's due to my iMac being Thunderbolt 1 (the 5Dt is Thunderbolt 2, which I purchased as future proofing my storage for my next desktop). I appreciate the fact that I can scale storage if need be, there is dual disk redundancy, and it's fast and quiet. I back up to offsite drives weekly and consider my system to be complete.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems great so far! I am not giving 5 stars only because I have not had it that long and really can't give a proper review like this until some time passes. But with that being said I really enjoy the simplicity and app Drobo has being able to monitor your drives, etc. and to have the ability to upgrade drives to any capacity and brand really is cool. Have 20TB now and ideally get it to 40TB soon. Aloha
