3 Legged Thing LEOSWITCHKIT Overview

  • 1Description

Featuring five leg sections and two column sections, the compact Leo from 3 Legged Thing is a micro-traveler tripod providing professional functions for your photo and video applications.

The Leo can be adjusted between a low-level angle of 4.75" and maximum height of 51.5", and fully folded at a length of only 13.8", which can fit in many carry cases and secured to many messenger bags. The included ball head adds another 3.5" to the Leo, bringing the total maximum height to 55". The Leo also has a detachable leg that you can use as a monopod, mic boom, camera boom, or selfie stick. The detachable leg has a 3/8"-16 thread on each end. The Leo weighs only 3.2 lb and supports up to 66 lb when set up at a 23° leg spread, which is considered normal. At 55° it supports 44 lb, and at 80°, 22 lb.

The two-section center column can also be inverted, so that you can have the camera mounted upside-down, as low to the mounting surface as you wish by lowering the tripod height, or you can raise the tripod height. The center column has a 3/8"-16 mounting screw on it, which can be removed and instead secured into the 3/8"-16 threads on the detachable leg. Otherwise you can attach the included ball head onto the screw (or optional tripod heads).

The included Equinox AirHed Switch Ball Head has an 81 lb load capacity, Arca-type compatible quick release mechanism, rubber-padded camera plate with a 1/4"-20 mounting screw, 3/8"-16 tripod mount thread on the bottom, bubble level, and ergonomic tightening knob on the side.

The Leo includes standard rubber feet but also supports optional 3 Legged Thing spiked and claw feet. The Leo employs 3LT's ParaLock lock system, designed to prevent accidental disassembly and provide additional stability and better grip.

The Leo is made from 100% Pure Stealth Carbon Fiber, which consists of eight layers of tightly woven carbon. It's constructed with a focus on optimum weight-to-strength ratio. Its furnishings are precision-milled from aircraft-grade magnesium alloy.

    3 Legged Thing LEOSWITCHKIT Reviews

Equinox Leo Carbon Fiber Tripod System & AirHed Switch Ball Head is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed in this tripod. Stripped screws. I had high hopes for this tripod because it looks very solid on paper. Unfortunately when I received my tripod i noticed that one of the legs would not fold down out of the folded position. The problem was one of the screw that controls the latch was not screwed in at all so it could not fold it over the joint. I thought to myself, what a bummer quality control over at 3lt should have easily caught this. Now this is where the major problem occurs.... to access this screw you have to remove the tripod leg. When I went to take out the second screw I noticed it was completely stripped and spun endlessly to my light touch. This is very concerning because I would of never figured this out if I didn't have to remove the legs. It makes me wonder how many tripods from 3LT have stripped screw and nobody has figure it out YET! I'm returning this product to bh photo but I'm also reaching out to 3lt so future customers will hopefully have a better experience then me. I hope this review helps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3 Legged stands behind its Thing I purchased this tripod and during trip the ballhead would not hold position in the vertical position (slot). I wrote 3LT support in Jolly Old England asking for advice about technique/operaton -- and after a few cordial preliminary questions via email about the camera/lens combo I was using, their rep volunteered to send me a new AirHed Switch Ball Head. Works like a charm. Cannot overstate the fantastic customer support provided by 3LT - earned a customer for life!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for the money! I purchased this tripod for an upcoming trip. My Gitzo tripod, with the ballhead off, barely "squeezes" into my roller carry-on bag. I decided I would trade some level of stability for a shorter folded length, making it easier to pack and to carry on my backpack. This is exactly what I got. A quality built tripod with some nice features and a surprisingly smooth ballhead. However, with four-section legs and the need to extend the center post to get the camera at a reasonable height, I've lost a noticeable amount of stability, even for my Fuji XT-2 system. If you're looking for portability and quality build, this tripod will probably work for you. If you have something other than a mirrorless system you may want to look at a different model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact, sturdy, easy to Use--who could ask for more? Perfect travel companion for my reproduction business.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic little Travel Tripod! I was looking for a nice travel tripod that wouldn't break the bank and was light enough not to break my back. This is it! Amazingly well thought out and made of high quality materials. The other review complaining about the screw, well I suppose. Anything is possible when mass producing products. I am sure the other big name brands have their mishaps too. I've used this with my gripped Sony a7R2, NiSi filters and various lenses with no issues. The ballhead has zero issues holding my gear in place for long exposures. The ballhead reminds me of my previous RRS?BH-40 ballhead. The RRS was a slight bit better built but not at the asking price. If I had any feedback for the manufacturer it would be to allow more positions when adjusting the legs on the tripod- I believe there are 4 now. Just make it a cog all the way. The carrying case is great! I did order the optional Multi-Tool and Heelz (expensive for what they are IMO). Overall, this is a wonderful tripod system that I'll be using for quite some time to come. I've previously owned MeFoto, Manfrotto and even the holy grail (to many) an RRS?TVC-34L so I can honestly compare them. This is a GREAT tripod and ballhead!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldnt ask for more It's sturdy, solid and ultra portable. I had the MeFoto road trip carbon fiber and when compared to this, its night and day. The mefoto twist locks felt cheap. The rubber on them would spin freely, making it hard to tighten them. This 3LT is built like a tank. Amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent travel tripod that should cost much more! This a very well thought out tripod that checks all the boxes needed in a travel situation. it's light enough to not worry about a lot of bulky weight and solid enough to do some really nice long exposure photos. The tripod is extremely configurable. Materials are made of high quality carbon and aluminum. The included ball head is a great value. It holds my gripped Sony a7R2 with any of my lenses without issues. Very little, if any, vibration. you can use the tripod carrying bag as a weight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Build quality is great, but lots of bits that can come loose It's a nice tripod. Light and small yet affordable. Not the stiffest when fully extended, but around what I would expect for something with this many leg segments and this weight. The ball head is built nicely and has a good feel. Smooth feel and tightens up nicely. The only issue is that there are a lot of individual parts to the system. Many of these parts are there to allow for proper maintenance and system flexibility, but that just means there are more parts to come loose.
