Leica's black 8x42 Noctivid Binoculars represent the perfect combination of form and function in a pair of binoculars. They are designed with an array of complementary technologies to produce bright and clear color-neutral images, while fitting comfortably in the hand for long, fatigue-free glassing sessions.

The Noctivid binoculars' performance starts with the use of SCHOTT High Transmission glass with a 12-element lens configuration and their HighLux-System anti-reflection multi-coatings, followed by phase-corrected compact roof prisms. These features produce bright and clear high-contrast images with accurate color rendition across the entire visible spectrum. Internal baffles limit scattered light in the optical tubes, which can affect clarity and contrast, while an innovative lens design and internal field flatteners ensure edge-to-edge clarity across the entire wide-angle field of view. The wide viewing angle and relatively low 8x magnification provide sweeping panoramic views that draw you in for a truly immersive observational experience.

The Noctivid binoculars are made with a dual-hinge/open-bridge that provides added gripping surface area while reducing the overall weight without sacrificing strength or stability. The binoculars' chassis is made of a lightweight and strong magnesium alloy that, when combined with the bridge configuration, further reduces the weight while shifting the center of gravity to the natural hand position, which translates to an improved handling experience with greatly reduced fatigue, allowing you to hold the binoculars for extended periods of time. To withstand the rigors of extensive outdoor use, all of the metal surfaces are treated with a proprietary varnish coating to resist corrosion and wear and the optical tubes are nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be fogproof, waterproof, and submersible.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 8x power magnifies views while helping to maintain a wide exit pupil and long eye relief
  • 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability for enhanced low-light performance such as at dawn and dusk or when peering into dense brush
  • SCHOTT HT (High Transmission) glass and 12 lens elements ensure accurate color rendition with limited distortion
  • Multi-layer high-temperature plasma anti-reflection lens coating deposition process ensures balanced light transmission across the entire visible spectrum
  • P40 phase-correcting prism coatings increase light transmission while improving contrast and clarity
  • HighLux-System (HLS) maximizes light throughput to improve color rendition and contrast
  • Internal baffle system reduces scattered light, which can interfere with contrast, color, and clarity
  • Hydrophobic AquaDura coatings on external optical surfaces allow dirt, dust, and fingerprints to be removed easily
  • Lens design and integrated field flatteners reduce spherical aberration and distortion across the entire field of view for edge-to-edge sharpness
  • Wide 62° apparent angle of view produces a spacious view and an immersive observational experience
  • Generous 406' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Open-bridge / dual-hinge configuration provides additional gripping surface area for better handling
  • Large slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather, or while wearing gloves
  • 56-74mm adjustable interpupillary distance allows easy use for a wide variety of people
  • ±4 right-eye dioptric correction range enables users to compensate for individual optical prescriptions for tack-sharp images
  • Twist-out 4-position click-stop eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • Long 19mm eye relief ensures comfortable use with reduced eye strain, especially during long glassing sessions
  • Wide 5.2mm exit pupil will completely cover pupils when they are open and fully dilated in low light to ensure the entire scene stays in view without vignetting
Construction Details
  • Bridge design helps to reduce overall weight without sacrificing strength or stability
  • Lightweight and durable magnesium alloy chassis
  • Protective black rubberized armoring provides a slip-resistant grip in all weather conditions
  • Nitrogen filled for fogproof performance, especially when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • O-ring sealed to be submersible to 16.5' (5m)
  • Proprietary varnish coating protects metal surfaces from corrosion and wear

Leica Noctivid 8x42 Reviews

Wonderful Surprise

Solid quality feel, vibrant clear optic, wide field of view, and intuitive focus knob have made these a wonderful hiking companion as well as great for window gazing on days you can't get outside. These were a gift from someone who wanted me to get out and enjoy Nature more. I was shocked at generosity, both in price, but after what I know now, I'd have a hard time finding a better choice for birding. LOVE THEM & that Special Someone.

I am completely satisfied with my 8x42 Noctivid binoculars. They are sharp to the edge. The color is spot on, and they have a remarkable depth of field. I have to say tat I am satisfied.

Best Bins Available

I've been a Leica fan for 20 years and these bins are the best. I have three pairs of bins, a spotting scope and camera - all from Leica. Noctivids are lightweight with nice design making them perfect for hours in the field with no fatigue. Sharpness, color and clarity are all impeccable - can't think of any way to improve them.

I am completely satisfied with these binoculars. They are clear, bright, project a very accurate color, and have excellent depth of field. Really a great product in my view, and one that I will be happy to use for years to come.

Worth it

I'd been wanting to upgrade my Vortex Vipers for some time and was ready to make the jump into something high end. Leica was my first choice because of the way they felt in my hand - it was a natural fit. Images are bright and colors stand out in a way I haven't seen in years. My only complaint is the weight - they're a bit on the heavy side - but that's minor compared to the view.

Perfect for Birding

I compared these to the Zeiss Conquest line and decided they are worth the extra money. These give an incredibly sharp, perfectly contrasty image that makes identifying birds in the field much easier.

When You purchase from Leitz(Leica) you expect the best. This pair of bins doesn't disappoint. The brightness and colors jump out at you. The 3-D rendering is amazing. The focusing knob is silky smooth and ever so precise, and the diopter adjustment is the best I have ever used. I read reviews for a month and tried to make sense of the various likes and gripes, but in the end, having owned many Leitz cameras, bins and used their spotting scope, it was not difficult to choose these 8x42's. My family still has their Leica bins from 35 years ago. You get what you pay for.

The binos are just great.

You can't do better than these. They are clear, sharp, have minimal color distortion, and do not distort until the image is at the very edge of the lens. Color rendition is very good. The focus is precise and smooth. I like the center mounted and locking diopter adjustment. They focus as close as 1.6 meters (maybe 1.8?).

I know these have custom winged eyecups as a separate accessory. My question is, do they have a matching rainguard like my Swarovski "WES" (Winged Eyecup Set) ?

It does not look like they have an option like the Swarovski Pair. My apologies for that.

What country are these made in?
Asked by: Steven
I just purchased new (Nov. 2021) and "MADE IN PORTUGAL" is printed on the bridge. I contacted Leica customer support in the US and they said yes, the Noctivid 8x42 (and other Leica Sports Optics) is now made by Leica in Portugal. For the record, I have a 25+ year old pair of Leica binoculars made by Leica in Portugal that still work like new.

Yes. The Noctivids include Leica's Passport warranty which is valid for purchases made from authorized retailers like B&H in the USA only and claims must be also through Leica's USA repair center only. This is not an international program.

Is it best (why?) for birding than the Leica 40094 Ultravid 10 x 42 HD Plus ?
Asked by: Agustin
In the Ultravid HD PLUS line, for its size (smallest premium full-size bins available) and massive field of view, the 8x32 or for its brightness and again, massive field of view, the 7x42 would be the best choices. For the absolute best optics available, the Noctivid 8x42 would be the best choice. 10x is generally considered too much power for birding. If you have to have 10x42, the Noctivid would be the best choice as it has the best optics (best sharpness, contrast, resolution and color rendition) of any 10x42 on the market.
