Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 Overview

Spanning a versatile and long-reaching focal length range, the Nikon F-mount SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 from Tamron is a 4x zoom covering telephoto to super telephoto perspectives. Complementing the long reach is an optimized optical design that features three low dispersion (LD) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range. eBAND and BBAR coatings have also been applied to reduce ghosting and flare when working in strong, backlit lighting conditions.

Beyond its optical attributes, the G2 version of this lens also incorporates a FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism to permit locking the zoom position at any focal length position to prevent accidental zoom extension. Conventional zoom lock is also featured to prevent barrel extension during transport. Suiting handheld shooting situations, Vibration Compensation (VC) is a 4.5-stop-effective image stabilization mechanism that helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper results when working with slower shutter speeds. A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers notably quick and accurate focusing performance to suit working with fast-moving subjects, and full-time manual focus is also supported for fine-tuned control. Benefitting its use outdoors, the lens also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to guard against dirt, dust, moisture, and smudging from affecting image quality. The ergonomic and durable metal construction of the lens also incorporates textured focus and zoom rings, and a removable, rotating tripod collar with an Arca-type compatible foot is supplied to better enable shooting from tripods and monopods.

Spanning a versatile, long-reaching range, this tele to super-tele zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, and can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 225-900mm equivalent focal length range.
Three low dispersion elements are incorporated to nearly eliminate both axial and transverse chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.
A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control.
A FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism enables you to lock the zoom at any position in order to prevent unwanted zoom extension during use. A conventional zoom lock switch is also featured, which locks the zoom in place at the 150mm position to prevent zoom extension during transportation.
A sealed, moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.
A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates. Due to this unique design, this lens is only compatible with select Nikon F-mount cameras that support an electromagnetic diaphragm, including the D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7000, D7100, D7200, D7500, D300, D300s, D600, D610, D700, D750, D800, D800E, D810, D810A, D850, D3x, D3s, D4, D4s, Df, D500, and D5 DSLRs.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 Reviews

Great value for wildlife photographer

Stacks up favorably against competitors and the price and quality offer good value. So far, very pleased with performance on my APS-C, will put it through its paces on CMOS and expect it to shine.

The most frustrating lens I've ever owned.

It is what it is as far as image quality goes. Respectable sharpness, CRAZY chromatic aberration, well built, all that jazz.... But focus. The stupid thing simply doesn't focus consistently across it's focus range. Mounted on a Canon 6DII at 600mm it needs a micro-adjustment offset of +7 at about 30 feet. Focus out to 60 feet out and that needs to be a +9. Focus beyond 100 feet, now you need an offset of +10 or +11. So I bought the Tap-in hub thinking I could fix that. That would be a very hard WRONG. Using test targets I spent half a day going through the focal range and focus distances to dial the thing in. It's a serious pain. When I was all done and feeling confident I'd done it well, I took the lens out. The thing was back focusing on things by YARDS. I applied a -10 offset in the body and that got it focusing mostly right, but clearly the time spent trying to dial the thing in to the points in the Tap-in app was a total waste of time. In short, the complaints you see in reviews about how this lens doesn't focus quickly or consistently are true, and it's because the lens simply doesn't focus in a linear way. At this point I'm not convinced that the adjustments provided through the Tap-in hub make any difference. I will never buy another Tamron lens, and I deeply regret having not just bought the Canon 100-400 L II. No lens should be this difficult to get focus out of.

Excellent Lens.

Purchased this lens for wildlife photography with my Nikon Z 7II. Unbelievably sharp and reasonably quick with auto focus. Feels very well made. Recommend without reservation for someone looking for an affordable tele-zoom.

Great Lens

I am enjoying this lens so far, it works nicely with my D780 body. The sharpness is great and I see very little if any chromatic aberration in my photos. The lens is quite solidly constructed as well. The switches are sturdy and don't slide out of place from accidental brushes. The autofocus gets confused when shooting against the sky zoomed in higher than 300mm. I have missed a few shots because of this, but I learned to back off the zoom for flying birds until the lens gets zeroed in. My biggest qualm with this lens is that, while it fits snugly with the body, it will rotate a noticeable amount when locked in. It is barely enough to see, but it is enough to hear and feel, especially when rotating to zoom.

Fast, Sharp Focus

This lens delivers on what it promises. The pictures are sharply focused, even at 600mm of zoom. The automatic focus is fast, but it does have its moments of indecisiveness. This can be limited or avoided by using the focus limiter switch set to the appropriate range (when you're focusing close-in or far off). Its size is manageable, even in wilderness settings, but its weight may cause difficulty for some. Bear in mind though that it is, in fact, one big hunk of glass wrapped in metal, so the weight is to be expected. All things considered, if you want to reach out to. 600mm worth of zoom, this lens is for you.

Very good for the price

I have over the years taken over 100,000 photos per year with my Sigma and Tamron long zooms, and it seems they each take outstanding photos for that first year, and then the sharp focus starts failing. I'm sure if I didn't go out photographing so often, or take so crazy many photos on each outing (2,500 to 3,500) this lens would have lens would have been an outstanding performer for much more than 1 year. It wasn't the time, it was the number of photos.

Best Wildlife lens for mere mortals

I own the first generation version of this and although it is a great lens I'm finding that this new version is much improved! The build quality, image stabilization and autofocus are all next level. With the image stabilization on the G2 you can use a much slower shutter speed than the G1 resulting in much better low light shooting. Also the G2 has much better weather sealing. I love it. If you've had the first gen for any length of time do yourself a favor and get this lens. It might not be the Nikon 600 F4 that we all want, but for us mortals who don't have 11 grand to spend on a lens this comes close enough. Super sharp with my D500

Great build and function

Great lens for birding and other wildlife. Photography is a hoppy for me so no need for a more expensive lens. All my lenses are Tamron and this one is the best. Easy to use, fast auto focusing and and multiple functions make this lens stand out from all the others!
