SLR Magic Cine overview

  • 1Description

The SLR Magic Cine 35mm f/1.2 FE Lens with Variable Neutral Density Filter Kit for Sony E-Mount from B&H supports cine-style shooting on Sony E-Mount cameras. It covers full-frame sensors with a fast f/1.2 maximum aperture for shallow depth of field. It features geared focus and aperture rings, a clickless iris that allows smooth aperture pulls, and a 13-bladed iris for a rounded aperture and pleasing bokeh. To help you shoot video at fast apertures, this kit pairs the lens with a 52mm ND filter that provides variable exposure reduction of 1.3 to 6 stops. The filter is multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting as well as reflections and also features 62mm front threads which helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses.

  • SLR Magic Cine 35mm f/1.2 FE Lens for Sony E-Mount

The SLR Magic Cine 35mm f/1.2 Lens for Sony E-Mount supports cine-style shooting on Sony E-Mount cameras. It weighs in at around a pound and covers full-frame sensors with a fast f/1.2 maximum aperture for shallow depth of field. It features geared focus and aperture rings, a clickless iris that allows smooth aperture pulls, and a 13-bladed iris for a rounded aperture and pleasing bokeh.

The lens is suitable for portrait, interiors, architectural, and landscape cinematography and photography. The front of the lens does not rotate as you focus the lens; this allows you to use optional polarizing filters, or accessories such as clip-on matte boxes. It incorporates a 52mm filter thread diameter for using a variety of readily available optional lens accessories.

    Coverage
The lens covers full-frame sensors with a 35mm focal length.
The clickless iris allows you to smoothly adjust your exposure during the shot.
Built-in iris and focus gears follow industry standards, allowing you to work with optional follow focus units and lens gear motors.
  • SLR Magic 52mm Self-Locking Variable Neutral Density 0.4 to 1.8 Filter (1.3 to 6 Stops)

The SLR Magic 52mm Self-Locking Variable Neutral Density 0.4 to 1.8 Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter that is designed to mount onto lenses with 52mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 1.3 to 6 stops. The 0.4 to 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with numbers representing different density values and includes a rotation lever to further enable fast and precise positioning of the front ring. Once the front ring is rotated into a position that corresponds to the desired amount of density, the filter's rear ring can then be turned to lock the front ring into place, helping to ensure consistent exposures.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity. It is multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting as well as reflections and also features a 62mm mount which helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
0.4 to 1.8 neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction of 1.3 to 6 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.
Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.
Multi-coated, optical glass for clarity and color fidelity as well as the prevention of internal ghosting and reflections.
Side lever allows the filter glass to be easily rotated.
Integrated exposure locking ring prevents accidental rotation of filter glass and changes to corresponding density values.
62mm front mount helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting with wide-angle lenses.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

SLR Magic Cine reviews

Cine 35mm f/1.2 FE Lens with Variable Neutral Density Filter Kit for Sony E-Mount is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for a great price I was a bit skeptical about the price point, but after using the Sony 28-135mm cine multiple times I decided I wanted something more compact to add to my camera bag. After watching some test videos I grabbed one of these. Works great on an A7sii, yes everything is manual, but I dont really see harm in that for video work. Its sharp, the 35mm focal length is nice because its a little wider than 50mm, but still looks pretty natural on full frame. Build quality is nice, heavier than expected, but I would prefer that to plastic. Definitely a cool lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I wanted to get my first actual cinema lens for my A7sii but I also wanted a good stills lens and Philip Bloom pointed me this way and could not be happier with this lens. I plan on getting all the lenses in this series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hoping for a poor man's loxia I was hoping for a poor man's zeiss loxia but I guess when one lens is priced about a grand under the other....well.... it's not a loxia. It lacks the punch, the contrast, the sharpness, as I suppose it should at this price point. However, I think it has value as a video/cine lens - which is exactly what it is. If used as such, it has some character to it and provides a different, pleasing look to it. The bokeh is lovely and the image can be flattering for close-ups and dreamy for longer shots. It fits nicely on my A73, compact with a solid build. And in that respect it does remind me of the loxia lens. The big difference between the loxia and the magic, besides the image, is ease of use. I have shot handheld, street photography and even some run and gun video with the loxia with really excellent results. The Magic is much more difficult to use in these environments. For me, it's a lens that really requires some set-up time to ensure that the focus is being nailed (which is tricky) and after the shot, I need time again to re-focus and re-compose. What this means, in the real world (my real world, anyway) is that I can use my loxia for wedding work, for instance, and have great confidence in the results. I would be terrified to use the Magic in the same way. I'm going to keep it - and use it when it makes sense - in video production situations where I can control the elements and take my time with it. I urge you to see Philip Bloom's video using the lens. He gets great results with it. I would really struggle to obtain what he managed to, in that situation. Hopefully, I will get better with it and gain some confidence and extend my use.
