ikan EC1 BEHOLDER overview

  • 1Description

The ikan EC1 Beholder is a 3-axis handheld gimbal stabilizer for DSLR and mirrorless cameras weighing between 2 and 4.5 lb. The EC1 offers unlimited 360° rotation along the yaw, pitch, and roll axes, and features an advanced 32-bit controller and 12-bit encoder system. The gimbal employs an adaptive PID algorithm to deliver stable rotation.

The EC1 offers three follow modes plus an auto-inversion mode that allows for upside down operation. Auto-inversion lets you use the gimbal with dual-handle support systems like the ikan DGH. The EC1 also features a lock mode that sets the camera in a fixed position, and a point-and-lock mode that locks the position you hold the camera in for a few seconds. The EC1 also has an OLED display on the rear that confirms the selected mode of operation and provides battery life info.

The EC1 is designed with a quick release baseplate that allows for convenient camera attachment and tool-less balancing. It also has a 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole on the handle for attaching accessories for advanced setups, and a 3/8"-16 threaded mounting hole on the bottom for mounting onto a tripod, monopod, and other support gear.

The EC1 runs on three supplied 18650 batteries that provide 8 to 10 hours of operating life when used continuously, and up to 20 hours when the gimbal is switched between shooting and standby modes throughout the day. These batteries are rechargeable from within the EC1 via an included micro-USB AC adapter, and can also be charged using optional chargers such as the ikan ICH-SC4.

Unlimited 360° Rotation
The EC1 Beholder features three 360° rotating brushless motors that give you a limitless range of motion along all three axes: yaw, roll, and pitch.
Advanced Stabilization
Using a 32-bit controller with a 12-bit encoder, the EC1 uses an adaptive PID algorithm to produce a reliably efficient handheld stabilizer.
Lock Mode
In Lock Mode, the Yaw, Pitch, and Roll axes work together to keep the camera fixed and pointed in one direction. The camera's position will stay the same no matter how you move the handle.
Point & Lock
Quickly lock your camera into any position by manually pointing and holding it in any direction. After a few seconds, the camera will lock and hold its position until it is reset back to default.
Multiple Follow Modes
The EC1 features 3 different follow modes. In yaw-axis follow mode, the EC1 will only follow your pan movements. In pitch and yaw-axis follow mode, the EC1 will follow your pan and tilt movements. The 3-axis follow mode gives you full control, allowing you to pan, tilt, and roll.
Auto Inversion
Switch to inverted mode at any time by simply flipping the handle over the camera. Inverted mode can be operated in conjunction with any of the lock and follow modes.
OLED Status Display
A display screen located on the back of the handle conveniently provides you with information on the battery life and operating mode.
Quick Release Baseplate
Featuring a newly designed quick release baseplate system, the EC1 is easy to balance without any tools.
Multiple Mounting Points
The EC1 handle a 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole for attaching accessories such as a light, microphone, or monitor for advanced setups; and a 3/8"-16 threaded mounting hole on the bottom of the handle for to mount the EC1 on a tripod, jib, or dual-handle support system such as the ikan DGH.

    ikan EC1 BEHOLDER reviews

EC1 Beholder 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Waste Your Money Not even a year of using this product, it has reached its end. It was never a great or good product to begin with, but it was “average” (for the price I originally paid for, $900, was certainly stupid on my part). With that said, it progressively became worse the more times I used it - motors became slow, pans and tilts were slow to follow my hand/arm movements, would constantly tilt regardless if it was originally balanced perfect and what finally made me say, “this is it, this sucks” was last night during a live shoot when it literally wouldn’t stop spinning. Anyways, I will attempt to return it given that it hasn’t been a full year, but I’m not holding my breath. Buy a Moza or Crane.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing, smooth and easy to use I love this, really easy to balance and easy to use! I'm still getting the hang of the movement since it's my first gimbal but honestly love it already. It's light, the motors are strong enough to hold my Canon Mark III with a 24-70 lens. I've looked at some test footage I shot the other night and love it. I'm really excited to take it out this weekend to shoot a longer concept using hand-held and mono-pod overhead boom style.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I previously owned the Ds1 which I was good out the box but still had some vibrations and needed some experience to get good results. I sold that one and decided to jump on the EC1 and i'm glad to say i made the right decision. It worked flawlessly right out the box, no micro vibrations and excellent stability. I will further test it out later this week and update this review if needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Smooth Video We purchased this gimbal just in time to film a wedding and a praise dance at church. I spent the first day getting familiar with balancing it and walking around with it. I would definitely recommend getting familiar with the way it turns while walking. The first time I balanced it, it took me around 40 minutes. It takes me around 5 minutes now. My wife filmed the wedding with a 7D Mark I &16-35mm f/2.8 Mark I with aSennheiser SEMKE600 MKE 600 shotgun mic attached to the side 1/4 - 20 mount and a monopod attached to the bottom 1/4 20 mount. The shotgun mic would not balance very well attached to the hot shoe. Mounting on the side of the EC1 worked very well, but took a little imagination to make it work. The monopod made it easier to handle while walking as long as it was fully closed. For the praise dance, I used the 5D Mark III with the same lens, shotgun mic and monopod. The footage came out really nice and smooth. The only complaint I have is with the threaded battery cap at the bottom of the handle. When attaching the monopod to the cap, it would tend to get cross threaded from the shifting of the weight. I would give it a 5 star if it were not for the fact that I had to use excessive force to get the battery cap to come off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Was not satisfied As much as I wanted to love this Gimbal, I had to return it. I mounted with a 5D Mark II body and 28mm 2.8 prime lens and was never satisfied with the performance. I balanced perfectly via tutorials online, but could not get the results I expected. I also tested with the Ikan Dual Grip Handle. It was especially disappointing because of all the 4 and 5 star reviews online and footage I viewed. My expectations were high but realistic. Perhaps I received a defective model. I ultimately believe my camera setup was too heavy for this product, even though it's rated to support the 5D. I have been shooting and editing professionally for over 20 years and very diy, so I will continue to explore other Gimbals that might work with my package. Hope others have a better outcome.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Constantly tilts or vibrates Terrible gimbal. Even when balanced perfectly (which has it's own issues where certain tightening knobs aren't attached so you can level on certain planes without additional wrenches), the gimbal constantly tilts to one side, or freaks out while recording video. If it isn't tilting, it's twitching, which you can see in the video and feel in the handle. Before you say it isn't balanced, it is. Guaranteed. I've been shooting for long enough that I know what's balanced and what isn't. And in a way, the only workaround is to NOT balance it exactly. I'm incredibly frustrated with this professional equipment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the price Like most gimbals it takes some time to set up and more to get used to using. I had the chance to play with on with my 7dmk2, 24-70 f2.8 v2. And it was rock steady.
    Date published: 2016-10-09
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quality Control (or worse, employee attitude) is an issue I will revise this review once I have received a replacement. The unit I received was forced into its factory packaging resulting in damaging it visibly in several placed on the exterior. By design, the unit can fold flat, IF IT IS ADJUSTED at all gimbal points to allow room to clear its own parts. Rather than adjust the unit, whomever packed this at the factory just forced it into a flat position, bending the middle gimbal arm while forcing second gimbal motor housing on top of the handle. Frankly, I would immediately fire the person who did this as they clearly have ZERO common sense and should not be anywhere near sophisticated electronics. To summarize: Item damaged while forced into carrying case Carrying case foam destroyed on both ends Unit marred and/or scratched in 5 places (I could only upload two photos)
