Is it possible to install a diskdrive, blueray, whatever, into one of the slots and access its contents on the network?

Only storage drives are supported. Bluray or DVD drives would not work.

question

What is the difference between this version and DS 916?
Asked by: Heidi
There are a few differences. First, the DS916+ has 2GB of RAM, upgradeable to 8GB as opposed to 1GB of RAM in the DS416. The DS916+ also is expandable to an additional 5 bays using the 5 bay DX module.

question

Can it operate with less than 4 drives, e.g. start with 1 then add drives over time as the need arises?
Asked by: Denis D.
Yes, but it probably requires that you decide up front how you are going to configure them.1.) JBOD -- can start with one and add them one at a time.2.) Raid 0 or 1 -- Probably need to start with 2 drives, and add them in pairs.3.) The default raid is a proprietary Synology raid configuration. Since I didn't use it I don't know what the rules would be, but a quick perusal indicates that it might be fairly flexible.4.) Raid 6 -- would be best to start with 4 drives.Dwight

question

Can the USB ports be used for a direct connection to a computer for local access to the hard drives?
Asked by: Dominik D.
While the USB port won't work from looking at Synology forums, one way is to use an Ethernet cable to connect the PC to the Synology. I did it this way to set up the Synology initially and then connected it to the home network with a WiFi adapter.

I am confused and need clarification. The specs say max size of data and ssd drives are 2Tb each. However, the specs say up to 16Tb in storage. At 2Tb max that's only 8Tb.

question

can this device be connected to a router, so I can upload/download wirelessly?
Asked by: joe z.
Yes, this will connect to a router. This is the way that I use it. It appears as a standard server on the network, so whether you can wirelessly upload depends on _your_ software, not the DiskStation.
