Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter
Key Features
  • 8-Pin Lightning Connection
  • 3.5mm Stereo Mini Plug
  • For Use with iPhone 7 and iOS Devices
The Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter from Apple is the cable you would use to attach your analog, 3.5mm-outfitted headphones to an iOS device that only accepts an 8-pin lightning connection, a device like an iPhone 7, for example. Indeed, if you wanted a cable from Apple itself to connect your favorite pair of headphones sporting a stereo, 3.5mm mini plug to your iPhone 7 (or later), this would be the cable for you.

Works as it should. Bought an after market version on Ebay that only played on one side. Buy OEM, aka Apple!!

Buy the real thing-B&H has the best price out there. Works not only for HP, but also external mics.

Inexpensive Adapter for Using Analog Headphones

By Gary

Apple has been on a campaign to eliminate connectors and controls from their products because of their preoccupation with minimalist styling. Those of us with quality analog headphones are forced to use an adapter because there is only one plug connection on the recent phones and tablets. This adapter works fine with either 3 wire or 4 wire connections and the mic and analog control switches on the headphones work properly. I enjoy using it for phone calls with ear buds and lightweight headset with a mic. On the minus side is that you cannot use the Lightning connector for charging while using the headphones (but of course you can charge with a Magsafe connector). Additionally, the output signal is fine for most earbuds and inexpensive headphones, but insufficient for many better headphones. It does not have enough power for my classic AKG K240DF studio monitor headphones (600 ohm) nor for my HiFiMan HE5se which both require more power. And you can use the adapter for other USB devices such as flash drives or even a digital camera. If you need more output power then I suggest the Apple Lightening Camera Adapter which includes a USB A connection plus a Lightening port for power. With this adapter you can use variety of quality external DACs (such as an Audioquest Dragonfly) and get a better feed for quality headphones and connecting to other components.

This Apple adaptor works great for connecting my old-style Apple headphones to my new lightning connection iPhone. I also got this to connect a lavalier microphone receiver to my iPhone as suggested by a B&H advisor and it works like a charm!

Screwed up a few video recordings by having bad connection on the 3.5mm side. Unreliable, not good.

Will this adapter work as an audio INPUT from the headphone jack of an external audio device to the Lightning INPUT of an iPad/iphone?
Asked by: B
Yes, you can use the Lightning port on an iPhone as an audio input. If you are connecting from a 3.5mm headphone output, you can use a cable like Rode's SC7 (B&H # ROSC7) which has a male 3.5mm TRS connector on one side and a male 3.5mm TRRS connector on the other side. The female end on the Apple Lightning adapter is 3.5mm TRRS so you connect the SC7 cable to the Apple adapter and then connect the Apple adapter to your iPhone. If you already have a 3.5mm aux cable, then you can use Rode's SC4 adapter (B&H # ROSC4) which has a female 3.5mm TRS connector on one side and male 3.5mm TRRS end on the other side. Both setups achieve the same results.

Is there a version of this adapter that also has a USB connector to simultaneously provide power?
Asked by: Bryan
You can get the Apple Lighting Camera adapter. It has a USB "A" connector and a lightning port to power the USB device and charge the phone. However you will have to purchase an external DAC to plug into the USB port to provide audio output (and they can be expensive). I use it with an Audioquest Dragonfly DAC and it works great with my quality headphones. Unfortunately it is output only-you need to use the internal mic with telephone calls. I'm not sure if the iPhone will accept audio input with this adapter. Another work-around is to use Magsafe charging if your phone has this feature.
