Tascam DR-10L Overview

  • 1Description

With the black Tascam DR-10L Micro Portable Audio Recorder with Lavalier Microphone, you can record full-resolution dialog and speech while skipping the trouble of long cable runs and avoiding the confusion of configuring a wireless microphone system. Whether you use the included omnidirectional lavalier mic or connect your preferred lav to the Sennheiser-compatible mic input, the entire setup can be discreetly affixed to your sound source. Just over 2 x 2 inches (and only 1-inch deep), the DR-10L is ideal for videography, interviews, weddings, vlogs, and lectures where the audio equipment needs to stay out of sight.

Run-and-gun filmmakers will appreciate its ultra-compact form factor and power-up-and-record workflow for time-sensitive shoots. There's no need to select inputs, arm tracks, or choose channel modes. Clip the DR-10L to a belt, or stash it in a pocket, start recording, and let it roll for the rest of the day. A single AAA battery will keep it running for up to 10 hours, so all-day gigs won't be a problem. Power the DR-10L via USB if you need indefinite operating time for sessions that continue on into the night. Worried about clipping? Don't be. The DR-10L's limiter and auto-level functions work to prevent overloading, while the dual-recording feature makes a safety track at a lower level, just in case.

Inconspicuous and Capable
Building on the success of the DR-10X and the DR-10SG, the DR-10L marries the industry-standard TASCAM portable mini-recorder with a high-performance lavalier microphone. Easy to use and easy to wear, the DR-10L can become your secret agent for better audio capture.
Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone
The included lavalier microphone features a mic clip for stable attachment to your sound source. Its omnidirectional polar pattern ensures that audio will be picked up from all directions, reducing inconsistencies caused by head movements and changes in mic position.
Locking 3.5mm Mic Input Jack
The locking 3.5mm mic input jack not only works with the included lav mic, but also provides a secure connection point for most Sennheiser lavalier mics and mics wired to the Sennheiser standard. A 2V mic bias can be activated via the DR-10L's menu system for mics that require plug-in power.
Volume Adjustable 3.5mm Headphone Output
Connect headphones to the 3.5mm mini-jack output for simple monitoring of file playback or input while recording. The volume is adjustable via side-panel buttons.
Dual Recording Creates a Safety Track at a Lower Level
Knowing that filmmakers and videographers often experience sudden audio volume jumps during filming, the DR-10L has several features to prevent distorted audio, and the most secure is dual recording. This feature captures a copy of your signal at a lower level (-6 dB or -12 dB), as a safety track in case of distortion.
Automatic File Closing Saves File Data upon Power Loss
You can always monitor the battery level on the easy-to-read OLED display. If the battery runs out in the middle of a recording, the unit will automatically save the file before turning off so your take isn't lost. The case is designed so that the batteries can be changed quickly without removing the recorder from its belt clip.
Automatic Gain and Limiter Inhibit Distortion
If the input sound level is too low or too high, an automatic gain control function can increase or decrease the recording volume to an appropriate level. Additionally, the limiter prevents distortion caused by sudden input overloads. These functions save you from worrying about input levels in situations when there is no second chance.
Supports microSD/microSDHC Cards
The DR-10L is compatible with microSD cards (up to 2GB capacity) and microSDHC cards (up to 32GB capacity). Record in WAV format for uncompressed audio quality, or use MP3 format for extended recording time on your media card. A 2GB card will yield over four hours of mono recording time at 24-bit / 48 kHz resolution.
Operates up to 10 Hours Continuously
A single alkaline AAA battery (available separately) will provide up to 10 hours of recording time at 24-bit / 28 kHz resolution. The DR-10L can be operated on disposable lithium or rechargeable NiMH batteries, or via USB bus power.
Compact and Lightweight Body
The DR-10L has been designed to be small, light, and easy to conceal. Perfect for on-camera talent, documentary subjects, or entire wedding parties, the DR-10L can easily be hidden away so that nothing comes between you and the perfect shot. Weighing just 2.2 ounces with a battery (available separately), your subject will forget it's even there.
Record Switch Design Prevents Accidental Use
The recording switch uses a sliding mechanism to prevent accidental use. In addition, the hold function can prevent recording from being stopped by unintentional contact with a button.
WAV and MP3 Formats
The DR-10L has a built-in clock and supports recording to BWF format, which has time information for improved searching, editing, and software compatibility. In addition to WAV and BWF format, recording and playback of MP3 files is supported.
Additional Features
  • Creates mono or poly WAV files

    Tascam DR-10L Reviews

DR-10L Micro Portable Audio Recorder with Lavalier Microphone (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 157.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best LAV kit for the price! I did an interview of a bike shop manager in Oakland, Ca using the DR-10L. We recorded inside the shop and out on the busy street (Broadway and 19th). It was very nice not having to worry about the distance from the camera and the potentially overwhelming street noise. I liked having the shop and street sounds but at a much lower background level. I love my Rode shotgun mic for similar reasons but it is more limiting than the LAV style mic. I can video across the busy street with the LAV. That wouldn't work with the shotgun. I like the price of this package especially when compared to wireless kits. It is less bulky than my H1 with a LAV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ode to Zoom H1 (R.I.P.) Zoom H1, you were a good, reliable, great sounding friend. But you didn't have dual record. Your headphone jack was on the side and not the top, which made it awkward and difficult to fit in a pocket, and it was surprisingly difficult to find a 90 degree 3.5mm microphone that was of reputable quality. You did not lock the microphone in place. I never used your on board microphones, and you were too tall. May your new owner from Craigslist treat you well. As for me, I have moved on and found perfection (...so far). Tascam DR-10L(bodypack audio recorder), Lumix LX100 (jacket pocket camera), Aputure AL-M9 (pocket light), Joby Gorillapod Focus (octopus)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'd definitely buy again Mine is fairly new and have only used a couple of times. I use it for interview/events. For my purposes the sound quality of good. If you are coming from a Tascam DR-05 or a Zoom H1, the DR-10L is much more compact and a better solution laving talent. Battery life seems fine. I am recording at the medium low gain setting; higher than often clips. Raising volume levels in post (Audition) is easy and the sound quality is good. The Sennheiser mic mount makes this better than a 3.5mm jack as it will not inadvertently come off (sure you can gaff the Zoom). I've got a wireless lav set up, but this Tascam is easier to work with less to travel with.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very useful compact recorder I've used this recorder several times for sit-down interviews. The audio quality is quite good and the battery life is long. I'm not crazy about the white color for the clip, which tends to show very obviously if it is exposed. The recorder records in 10 minute increments, so you have to join the clips on longer interviews. The settings are pretty easy to use, once you understand them. The screw-in connector is good because the plug will not accidentally pull out. The headphone jack allows for monitoring of the recording. Keep in mind that this is an audio only recorder and will not record into your video recorder. It is a dual system.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can't set recording levels. That's a huge problem. I really wanted to like this product. Mic is great, recorder does a good job. But there's one thing they don't tell you. THERE'S NO WAY TO SET AUDIO LEVELS!! you can set mic gain in one of 5 different positions and hope that your levels fall where you want. For something the is supposed to be a pro level piece of equipment that's a huge fail. And considering this is not mentioned in any description of the product anywhere I call it a huge fail overall. Would definitely NOT purchase it again. Save your money and get a proper wireless set up and be done with it. This thing is not great

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tascam DR10L Recorder, so far - so good I've used this little recorder and mic system on 4 events so far and have to say I'm very impressed. I typically use XLR mics with pre-amps, but have discovered this lav mic and recorder are a much easier system, with little to no sound quality degradation. In fact, when trying to isolate voices from back-ground noise, this system frequently provides the most usable audio track. I typically leave the pick-up at the mid point and all is good. And synching the audio to video is very easy with my video software, Cyberlynk Powerdirector. The Tascam is a very good product, and at $200 a great value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound, easy to use I bought this for my grandfather to record his memoirs. The sound quality is excellent and it's easy to use. I compared this with voice recorders, a pro handy recorder, and an affordable lav mic. This had the best sound. Plus it's super easy to use and the menu is easy to navigate. I like the fact that it has a built in limiter, so I can set the level kind of high without worrying about distortion. And if that's not enough, I can record a separate track at a lower volume. I also like that you have to slide and hold the record switch for about a second to stop and start recording, so there will be no accidental stopping. I think that this is probably the best sounding option for spoken voice at this price point.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Record File Was Silent Cannot trust this device after just a dozen uses. The occurrence was a record file-- 25min interview-- yielded a file of the same duration that was silent. The mic connection and battery power had been checked and tested just before use as always. This is our 3rd Tascam device in the last 5 years that worked fine until a total fail within first dozen uses; always lured by the promise of convenience, price and form factor. Mfr. support not good, no fix in sight.

If I need to purchase a replacement lav, is there a specific one that I need. I tried to use a lav mic from a Sony UTX-V023 (looks same connection) but no audio comes through to the recorder. Not sure why and now not sure which one to purchase? Thank you
    Asked by: Las
Although the locking 1/8 connector looks the same, Tascam has the same polarity as Sennheiser. Not Sony. The Sennheiser lav SEME2II will work with the DR-10L.

What foam windscreen do you recommend for the DR-10L? And not the Auray WLF-014-3. The WLF-014-3 seems to be too large and stands out.
    Asked by: Nelson
It comes with a windscreen as in the photo, with a metal collar. However, there is only one lav mic screen that works and that is the fuzzy one that looks like your cat got too close to a barbed wire fence. All foam screens for lav mics are too small to do anything, and often create more turbulence (noise) than just going bare mic. Without going across town to look, if the lav head is similar to the ECM-77B, then the body is nicely rounded with no sharp corners and only 3-4 pinholes to let sound in. That makes for a pretty windproof mic. I never use a screen and results on the beach are pretty darned good. If you are definitely set on protecting the mic, and I argue that it is a decent mic that doesn't need replacing at this price point, look up a vampire clip. That will sheild you mic body while allowing sound in perfectly. It pins under a collar, under a shirt, scarf, sweater, etc. A Tram mic would require rewiring the connector, and either it costs a lot to do or the work will be horrible.
