Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Reviews

Good lens but plastic lens mount and too expensive?

I bought three of these lenses for myself and two of my adult kids. I like this lens. It's compact and light. I haven't really checked just how good or poor the image quality is but mainly I don't expect great image quality from a lens with this zoom range. I bought it as a light travel kit with a Canon M5 for me and M50 for my two adult kids. The only downside I see is the price at $499 and that the lens mount is plastic. For $499 one would think the mount would be made of metal even if it added an ounce or two in weight. And the fact you have to pay an extra $29 for the lens hood. All that said, I did buy three of these lenses.

The Best Bet as an All-Around Zoom Lens for my Canon EOS M50

I bought this lens as a single-lens-does-everything solution for my Canon EOS M50 camera, and am mostly happy with the result. The small size of the lens and excellent mechanical quality are strong points (the turning action of the zoom ring is easy and smooth). I also have the Canon 15-45mm and 55-200mm EF-M zoom lenses, and the Tamron 16-300mm EF zoom lens (which requires the Canon EF-EOS M mount adapter to attach to the M50). I am giving up considerable zoom range at both ends with the 18-150mm (compared to the other lenses), but gain the single lens advantage with the small size and weight. I was also hoping for optical superiority with the 18-150mm lens, but so far have not seen it. At 150mm, the 18-150mm is a touch softer than the 55-200mm set at 150mm. The Tamron 16-300mm and the 18-150mm are about equal at equivalent focal lengths, with a slight edge going to the 18-150mm. Nevertheless, the 18-150mm takes very nice, sharp pictures throughout it's zoom range.

Excellent quality level matched to the M series

In truth, this lens really deserves 4.5 stars. Rated on value for the money, this lens is a solid 5 stars. It's a great companion to the M series, is well balanced, and much lighter to carry around all day than Canon's more pro models that can be used on M series bodies with an adapter. As for quality of the glass, mechanics, flare, and long term durability, the lens is more like 4 stars. I got this lens in a kit that matched it with the M5, a model now discontinued by Canon. Working with the M5's 24.2mp sensor, it does an adequate job. I would not expect it to be able to resolve anything much larger than that. The variable maximum aperture isn't an issue, however you should keep in mind that your maximum aperture at 70mm and up is f/6.3. You're going to want to boost ISO for handheld shots in low light. Vignetting is evident at all aperture settings but is only really seen in RAW because jpg images are fixed automatically. Flare can be a problem, and Canon doesn't supply a lens hood with your purchase which is a shame; an optional lens hood is available. The lens isn't weather sealed in any way, and the front carriage extends quite a bit at maximum telephoto. That means there's the potential for dust to be drawn in. I would suggest that you be rather careful when dust and sand is being blown around. Sadly, Canon chose to use a plastic lens mount instead of metal (brass would have been ideal). Maybe the logic is that the focal range of this lens is so useful that most people will never want to take it off. Over time and hard use, metal always wins over plastic.

Fantastic travel lens, tac sharp, very light and compact.

This is the third lens that I purchased for my new M6 II. I am sidelining the kit lens (15-45mm) because with this lens 18-150mm and the 11-22mm that I purchased, I can cover 99% of my photo needs. This lens performs extremely well for me. I shoot mainly landscape and wildlife so the f/3.5-6.3 suites my needs perfectly. I do wish that the lens lock was a friction lock not a single click lock. I find the lock mechanism to be very cumbersome. The fact that it locks out as well as in is also a concern (potential stove pipe damage. This lens is amazingly lite and tac sharp. The first thing I did was to compare this to my big 5Dsr and I was shocked at how little difference there was in image quality. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone. I think cannon is on the right track with the new mirrorless cameras and lenses.

It may be unfair to compare this lens to the Canon RF 24-105 f/4L IS lens, but that is one that I use on my R5. I have the 18-150mm on a Canon M6 MKII and it is only ok throughout its range. I would not print larger that 11x14 or crop very much with this lens.

I am excited for a time for the conditons where I will need to use the range; where subjects might be close or ordinary distance, or might be a little further - a little far away.

question

Would this lens be ideal for travel vlogging using selfie-mode or would the 15-45 lens be a better option?
Asked by: Josaih C.
The 15-45 lens is a much better option for selfies because it is so light and short and wider. The only reason to get the 18-150 mm lens is to take photos when traveling. This is highly useful for your Instagram account.
