Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4 IS PR... Overview

Spanning an impressive wide to telephoto range, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO Lens from Olympus is a 24-200mm equivalent zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its f/4 constant maximum aperture, this lens offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range to suit both stills and video shooting. Its optical design incorporates a slew of low dispersion and aspherical elements in order to reduce both chromatic and spherical aberrations, and both a ZERO coating and a Z Coating Nano have been applied to greatly reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast.

Benefitting handling the expansive zoom range is an optical image stabilization system that works in conjunction with select cameras' 5-axis image stabilization to form Sync IS, which compensates for up to 6.5 stops of camera shake. A Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) high-speed imager AF system provides quick, accurate, and quiet focusing performance well-suited to both photo and video applications, and a manual focus clutch permits fast changing to MF for more precise control. Additionally, a lens function button is featured on the side of the barrel for direct settings adjustment, and the lens also features a weather-sealed construction for use in trying environmental conditions.

Spanning a wide-angle to telephoto range, this 12-100mm zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-200mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture provides consistent illumination throughout the zoom range to benefit both stills and video applications.
One double-sided aspherical element and three aspherical elements are featured in the optical design to limit spherical aberrations for improved sharpness with reduced distortion. Additionally, five extra-low dispersion elements, two Super HR (high-refractive index) elements, and one HR element are also used to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and color fidelity.
Both a ZERO Coating and a Z Coating Nano are applied to individual lens elements to noticeable reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color neutrality in strong lighting conditions.
Lens-based image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to benefit shooting handheld with this lens in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, this lens supports Synchronized IS, which pairs the optical IS system with select Olympus cameras' 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization to control up to 6.5 stops of camera shake.
A MSC autofocus system provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance to benefit both still photo shooting and movie recording. Additionally, an MF clutch is used for fast changing to manual focus for more precise control.
Weather-sealed construction guards the lens against dust and moisture for working in harsh environments.
Circular seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

I love the lens, wish I was stronger.

This is a great lens, but a bit heavy. I remember the days when I hiked hills (not mountains) with a Pentax67, three lenses and a Tiltall, can't do that anymore. I have seven OM-D bodies, five 10s, a 5 and a 1. This lens replaces the 12-40 on the 1.2 and the 12-40 goes to a 10.2 the rest of them have various lesser zooms or primes on them just like a box of chocolates waiting to be chosen. One of the most important uses of the 1.2 is to photograph my paintings in high res mode. To my eye the 12-100 has warmer richer colors than the 12-40, maybe it is a difference in contrast or coating, I cannot document this but that is what I think. Why you might ask do I use a zoom lens for copy work of a flat field, because I think the 12-40 and the 12-100 are good enough for my use and much more flexible than a prime. So far I am very happy with the lens and I am very very happy with B&H.

This and the 100-400 with the TC 14 were all I used in Yellowstone to get great shots far and wide. This lens is very sharp and focus is quick and positive

Great Travel-the-World Lens

Bought this lens 5 years ago and love it. When I want to travel light, with just one camera, it's this lens with an E-M1 II camera. Great zoom range; not a macro lens but focuses close enough; quite sharp; it's a great all-around, travel-the-world lens. It's also a great zoom for live streaming.

I've Become Boring...

I got this lens because I was planning on a trip up the Oregon coast in late September and didn't want to bring a ton of kit with me because of a bad hip. The trip was canceled because of COVID, but the lens was definitely not canceled. This is a great all-around lens and it has found a home on the front of my E-M1 Mark III. I figured when I bought it that a travel zoom would only live on the camera during travel, but the image quality of this lens when combined with the extremely useful zoom range and the fast enough aperture for most situations has made me realize that this is the most useful lens in my overstuffed bag. Could it be faster? Probably not given cost and size considerations. Could it give better bokeh for portraits? Sure, f/4 is on the slow side. But this is supposed to be an all around, do almost anything lens, and at that it succeeds wildly. This is the best lens I have ever owned in terms of image quality combined with flexibility. Yeah, it's big and heavy for an MFT lens, but the whole rig on an E-M1 Mark III weighs just over a kilo, which is way less than the slower Canon EF 28-300L (more or less) equivalent lens weighs alone.

Awesome, worth the money

I've been wanting this one for a while and I finally own one. I do a lot of river and waterfall photography along with pictures of fish and flies for companies in the fly fishing industry. This is the Golden Retriever lens for this type of photography. Alongside my 12- 40 f2.8 on my Olympus E-M1 MK3 I also have a perfect street/neighborhood combination as well. The rhododendrons are gorgeous here and the 12-40 is perfect for close ups and pics of bees.

Unbeatable focal length range for its size. I bought this lens for two reasons. First its focal length range and second because with it's built in stabilization combined with the OMD E-M1 mk3's IBIS, I can hand hold shots at 200mm at 1/20th sec!!! I rented this lens a couple of years ago along with a E-M1 mk2 just to test. I only had it a couple of days and did not read up enough on how to configure it. I did not end up buying the combo because I thought it was too complicated. However, I got a night shot at a carnival, of a ride, handheld at 1/13sec at 120mm (equiv) that was tack sharp where it needed to be. I got the ride blurred just like I planned. I was impressed at that. The lens is super sharp in the center but there is a bit of softening at the edges. That does not bother me. The CA is well controlled unless wide open at the 12-14mm focal length. Watch high contrast areas there. Overall, a fantastic lens and well worth the money. B&H service was great. I even had the lens delivered a day ahead of schedule!

Super sharp, great IS, and wide range. I love this lens. I may never take it off my OM-1.

Favorite MFT Lens

)I shoot wedding video. I rented the Olympus 12-100 multiple times before buying it. I use it for everything outdoors and for indoors by a window, such as bridal prep (I switch to faster primes for darker-lit ceremonies and receptions). I love that it allows me to reframe quickly. I achieve a nice shallow depth of field when using the long end of the lens. The short minimal focal distance makes it great for rings and invitations. The focus clutch and constant aperture are invaluable. I tried the Olympus 12-200, but the variable aperture was too much of a pain in the neck to deal with.
