Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4 IS PR... Overview

Spanning an impressive wide to telephoto range, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO Lens from Olympus is a 24-200mm equivalent zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its f/4 constant maximum aperture, this lens offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range to suit both stills and video shooting. Its optical design incorporates a slew of low dispersion and aspherical elements in order to reduce both chromatic and spherical aberrations, and both a ZERO coating and a Z Coating Nano have been applied to greatly reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast.

Benefitting handling the expansive zoom range is an optical image stabilization system that works in conjunction with select cameras' 5-axis image stabilization to form Sync IS, which compensates for up to 6.5 stops of camera shake. A Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) high-speed imager AF system provides quick, accurate, and quiet focusing performance well-suited to both photo and video applications, and a manual focus clutch permits fast changing to MF for more precise control. Additionally, a lens function button is featured on the side of the barrel for direct settings adjustment, and the lens also features a weather-sealed construction for use in trying environmental conditions.

Spanning a wide-angle to telephoto range, this 12-100mm zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-200mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture provides consistent illumination throughout the zoom range to benefit both stills and video applications.
One double-sided aspherical element and three aspherical elements are featured in the optical design to limit spherical aberrations for improved sharpness with reduced distortion. Additionally, five extra-low dispersion elements, two Super HR (high-refractive index) elements, and one HR element are also used to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and color fidelity.
Both a ZERO Coating and a Z Coating Nano are applied to individual lens elements to noticeable reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color neutrality in strong lighting conditions.
Lens-based image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to benefit shooting handheld with this lens in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, this lens supports Synchronized IS, which pairs the optical IS system with select Olympus cameras' 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization to control up to 6.5 stops of camera shake.
A MSC autofocus system provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance to benefit both still photo shooting and movie recording. Additionally, an MF clutch is used for fast changing to manual focus for more precise control.
Weather-sealed construction guards the lens against dust and moisture for working in harsh environments.
Circular seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Solid Build

Great range of focal length. Ideal travel lens without being weighed down. Solid build quality with absolutely no play in the lens. Tight weather sealing works well for me under less than ideal shooting conditions.

A Lens that Sells the System

Excellent build quality. Fantastic zoom range. It's a compromise compared to the f/2.8 Professional models - but makes up for not changing lenses across the capable range. For lighter packing days, it's speed and quality are worth it.

Far Better Than I Expected

I finally caved on trying this lens as I wanted a all around walk around or travel lens. I'd had such lenses in the past and they were ALWAYS compromises. Usually at the long or wide end with either excessive distortion at the wide end or lack of significant sharpness at the long end. I was quite shocked to find out, after running it through a number of tests I run all my lenses through, that it essentially had NO bad habits. It is sharp across it's entire range. Doesn't have much if any distortion at the 12mm end either. The stability with this lens on an OM-1 is like being on a tripod. The build quality is easily equal to the finest that Sony, Canon and Nikon have to offer. Precision to say the least. It is NOT heavy by any means like some seem to feel. It was a bit pricey but it will reap the benefits when I'm out and about and don't wish to carry multiple lenses. The f4 thus far has not presented any issues as the stability for static subjects isn't a problem even in lower light. Highly recommended.

I love the lens, wish I was stronger.

This is a great lens, but a bit heavy. I remember the days when I hiked hills (not mountains) with a Pentax67, three lenses and a Tiltall, can't do that anymore. I have seven OM-D bodies, five 10s, a 5 and a 1. This lens replaces the 12-40 on the 1.2 and the 12-40 goes to a 10.2 the rest of them have various lesser zooms or primes on them just like a box of chocolates waiting to be chosen. One of the most important uses of the 1.2 is to photograph my paintings in high res mode. To my eye the 12-100 has warmer richer colors than the 12-40, maybe it is a difference in contrast or coating, I cannot document this but that is what I think. Why you might ask do I use a zoom lens for copy work of a flat field, because I think the 12-40 and the 12-100 are good enough for my use and much more flexible than a prime. So far I am very happy with the lens and I am very very happy with B&H.

)I shoot wedding video. I rented the Olympus 12-100 multiple times before buying it. I use it for everything outdoors and for indoors by a window, such as bridal prep (I switch to faster primes for darker-lit ceremonies and receptions). I love that it allows me to reframe quickly. I achieve a nice shallow depth of field when using the long end of the lens. The short minimal focal distance makes it great for rings and invitations. The focus clutch and constant aperture are invaluable. I tried the Olympus 12-200, but the variable aperture was too much of a pain in the neck to deal with.

The One Lens to Have if One Lens Is All you Can have

This is my second 12-100 Zuiko Pro zoom lens: I wanted to have a back-up to my main lens. This is a lens that just delivers what I ask of it. For a super zoom, it has unusually consistent (and good) optical performance: IQ is very good-to-excellent from corner to corner, at any focal length. The constant maximum f-stop of f/4 is very convenient and appreciated. It is a bit on the large and heavy side for a Micro Four Thirds lens, but there really is nothing else quite like it.
