Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm f/1.2 PRO Overview

A high-speed normal-length prime featuring an advanced optical design, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm f/1.2 PRO Lens from Olympus is a 50mm equivalent lens designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Its unique 19 elements, 14 groups construction incorporates extra-low dispersion, aspherical, and high refractive index elements to significantly reduce both chromatic and spherical aberrations for notable image clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. The lens is also characterized by a bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, which benefits working in low-light conditions and affords extensive control over depth of field. A nine-blade aperture is featured as well, to achieve a smooth bokeh quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques, and a Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual elements to limit flare and ghosting for improved contrast.

Beyond the imaging assets, the lens' physical design is characterized by a weather-sealed construction to benefit working in harsh climates. It also features a Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system for smooth, quiet, and fast focusing performance that is suitable to both stills and video recording. A manual focus clutch permits quick switching to MF control and a printed depth of field scale is also featured on the lens barrel for pre-focusing and hyper focal focusing techniques.

Standard prime 25mm lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 50mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptionally fast f/1.2 maximum aperture supports working in difficult lighting conditions and affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus techniques.
The intricate optical design employs one Super Extra-Low Dispersion element, two extra-low dispersion elements, one Extra High Refractive Index element, three high refractive index elements, and one aspherical element, which all work in concert to control chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity, reduced color fringing, and enhanced sharpness.
A Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual lens elements to noticeably reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color neutrality in strong lighting conditions.
A MSC autofocus system, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance to benefit both still photo shooting and movie recording. Additionally, an MF clutch is used for fast changing to manual focus for more precise control.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Weather-sealed construction guards the lens against dust, moisture, and freezing temperatures for working in harsh environments.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm f/1.2 PRO Reviews

Worth the challenge

It's challenging to shoot with a prime lens, and sometimes I give in and switch to my also excellent 12-40 zoom. But if I force myself to leave all other lenses behind I'm almost always glad I did.

Everything it's advertised to be!

Debated about this lens for a while. Glad I chose to pony up the funds -- it is worth it! Agree with others that the operation of the lens is SO smooth. Coupled with the OM-D EM 1 Mark ii, this will definitely cover my low-light needs. A few quick shots proved that. Attached photo done in low light to also test the great bokeh everyone praises. I'm happy. Between this lens and the 12-40 Pro I bought with the Mark ii, most of my needs are covered (until I decide I can't live without the 40-150 Pro!).

Sharp sharp sharp!

Aside from being a bit of a monster (in 43 terms) for a non-zoom, it's an amazing lens. I've been walking around with it on my G9 this winter, some great low light shots in the snow.

Wonderful addition

Everything I hoped

I use the lens as my walk-around lens most of the time, especially when I will be in low light situations at night or indoors. Able to use low ISOs and can capture very crisp images that are better than my f2.8 20-40 zoom albeit with the slight restriction of it being a prime lens so a bit more effort on my part occasionally.

Love this lens!!

Purchased for my M1Mk2.  No matter which camera Brand/System I’ve owned, I’ve always had a fast 50 FOV for it.  This lens is absolutely excellent.  Crisp and clean images.  Nice bokeh when desired. Superbly built.  If I had to choose my “desert island” lens,  it would easily be other this one or the Oly 12-40.

This does come off my camera, but...

I always end up putting it back on. I shoot with an E-M1 m3 and love the balance that the 25 mil provides. The size and weight on that body are perfect, in my opinion. I have nothing to add about image or build quality; they're superb as the other reviewers have said. I also have the Voightlander 25mm F0.95, which I also really like. That lens is also wonderful and I think worth the price. But it's completely manual, so you don't get information about aperture in your image data. And, while the Voightlander's build quality is also excellent, it's not weather sealed. For all that, the Voightlander is actually heavier than the Oly. However, the manual focus on the Voightlander is the best I've used. But as I get older, I use autofocus more and more. I switch the Oly 25 mil out for the 12-100mm and 7-14mm lenses when more reach or a wider view is needed, but I keep coming back to the 25. Someone said this would be their desert island lens. I think I agree with that.

Leaves the Traditional Fast 50 1.4 in the Dust

For many years, the standard SLR lens was a 50mm f/1.4 optic. It was fast but not really usable until about f/2.8. F/1.4 was not where one could expect sharp, contrasty results. I had pretty much given up on the Fast 50 standard lens until I bought the Olympus 25mm f/1.2 Pro lens. I am now a believer in the 50mm (full-frame) field of view again. The Olympus lens is quite large and heavy by Micro Four-Thirds standards, so don't even think about getting it if you are concerned about size, weight, and cost. It does work well on an OMD EM 1.3 body and its sold feel matches that of the camera. Weather sealing is a nice feature. Focus is fast, the image is bright, and the lens is quite sharp wide open. Focus is critical because the depth of field at f/1.2 is really very slim so the shooter has to pay attention. Out of focus areas show very soft bokeh, yielding good subject separation, even at this modest focal length. Yes, this lens is going to get considerable use.

question

Will this lens work with the Panasonic GH5?
Asked by: Anonymous
It will fit all Micro 4/3 mounts, but be aware you may be better off buying a Panasonic lens -- especially as this Olympus is rather pricey. REASON: Panasonic puts its anti-shake technology in lenses, whereas Olympus mostly leaves it out of the lenses and puts the technology in the camera body.
