The red BackPacker Air Travel Tripod from MeFOTO is a sturdy, lightweight, and compact aluminum alloy support designed for the modern enthusiast and smartphone photographer.

Extending to a maximum height of 59.5" and capable of supporting up to 8.8 lb, the BackPacker Air is not all that different from its Classic series sibling—with one big difference—HyperLocks. The telescoping 5-section HyperLock design allows the user to set-up and break-down the tripod with speed and ease by simply turning the rubber foot in one direction to extend the leg and in the opposite direction to lock it at the desired length. This design also helps to reduce the tripod's overall weight down to a transportable 1.98 lb.

Appealing to both system camera users and smartphone photographers, the Air series comes equipped with a few features that many users will find both fashionable and functional. Starting off, the Air series features a color-matched Arca-type compatible ball head, which not only includes a color matched Arca-type plate, but is also capable of independent 360° pans—an uncommon feature on a ball head this compact. Secondly, the entire center column may be removed from the tripod and, using HyperLock technology, is capable of extending into a stand-alone selfie stick. A folding smartphone adapter is included for convenience as is a universal Bluetooth remote capable of triggering the camera on most smartphones. Lastly, MeFoto aims to make user manuals a thing of the past with new intuitive icons on the tripod's body. Each icon is placed at a point of interest or adjustment and details, in easy-to-understand pictograms, how to adjust the tripod for any shooting situation.

For those looking to use the BackPacker Air for low-angle photos or on a table top, each one of the tripod's anodized aluminum legs can be spread independently down to a minimum height of 11.2". The 3-position leg angle stops allow the user to adjust the tripod's height to accommodate almost any shooting situation. Additionally, a removable spring-loaded hook is located in a recess at the bottom of the center column, allowing you to hang a variety of weighted objects to increase the tripod's overall stability.

As a travel tripod, the BackPacker Air is designed to fold in an inverted style with the 3 legs collapsing upward around the center column. This design allows the BackPacker to attain a compact folded length of just 10.4", which fits conveniently within the included soft carrying case.

    MeFOTO BPAIRRED reviews

BackPacker Air Travel Tripod (Red) is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Small and light but flimsy design Solid feeling, light weight and tiny design. Build feels solid and fast setup as advertised. The problem is that even with pretty light weight cameras the center column collapses and slowly rotates when using this fully extended. The head has no separate pan control, so moving the camera twists the column loose. So the twist design for the column and legs seems great in practice, but makes for a very shaky and unstable tripod. I had legs and column collapse on their own, even though i though they were tightened enough. Ended up returning. The regular BackPacker tripod from MeFoto is a lot more stable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from don't waste your money I purchased this tripod prior to leaving on an extended work/pleasure trip in Argentina. I take full responsibility for not putting it through some real life situations before I left the country. I'm using it with Fuji X-T2 and a Fuji f2.8 16-55 lens. No matter how much I fuss with the tripod, the legs unscrew & release constantly. As a previous reviewer mentioned if you move the camera on the ball head it unscrews the top section and it releases. I couldn't be more disappointed with this tripod, it was a complete waste of money!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't trust your camera on this one I have a MeFoto standard tripod and like it very much. I was lured by the price point, size and weight of this one. It weighs half of my othe one ( about 2 pounds vs 4 pounds). I liked the design too. But upon receipt, and trying it out in my living room, without even mounting the camera, the legs kept collapsing. No matter what, I couldn't get them to lock properly and hold their lock. Other aspects of the tripod seemed silly - a removable selfie stick is something I don't need. And the detailing is mostly plastic. Not something I want to rely on when I'm traveling. I returned it and will stick to my heavier one for the time being! In addition, it says it is designed for mirrorless or small cameras, something not obvious when I ordered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great compact tripod! I have owned the original MeFoto backpacker and roadtripper for well over two years now and both have seen plenty of miles put on them. They've both been really great for my needs, but I was always looking for something just a bit smaller that would be able to be stored on the inside of my bag rather than on the outside. This tripod fulfills that demand and works wonderfully with my Fuji kit. The one click opening system is very fast and makes moving around a breeze. For owners of smaller camera systems this is a great travel option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice light weight Backpacking Tripod This product was exactly what I was looking for. I have a few tripods that are great for really keeping the camera steady. The only problem with them is that they are quite heavy and bulky. Even the carbon fiber ones are just to cumbersome to put into a back pack and go for a hike. I have been eyeing the MeFoto ones for awhile but what really put me over the edge was the single twist legs that fully extend in one twist and pull. I can set up very quickly and tear down just as fast. Love the weight and compact design. Plus the center pole converting into a selfie stick is a nice bonus. It even came with the bluetooth remote and phone clamp. The only issue I had was the bluetooth remote does not want to stay into the clamp that holds it on the center column. It pops out really easily. I can see me loosing this. I just glued it into the clamp and it should be fine. Since it is rechargeable I don't see an issue. Other than that love the colors and would buy this for a friend or my wife. She has been eyeing it up already.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little package Great product. It's light, and solid enough, and tiny! Had no trouble carrying it around on my backpack, and just by hand. The twist to turn is probably the most cumbersome aspect of it. It does make it quick to set up, but if you don't twist it correctly you might find your camera falling! So for future purchasers, just be aware that this is a twist to lock design. The aspect of having a selfie stick is novel, and it's nice that it does come with a smartphone holder, definitely a monopod would have been better (MeFoto does have a model with a monopod, but the weight I believe is 4 times more!).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Unstable I bought this because of the compact size. I know that buying a compact tripod i'm not going to get the most stable; however, this was very flimsy. Fell over 2 times doing long exposure when it wasn't windy at all. I am returning this item for sure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best lightweight/compact tripod I wish I could give it 4.5/5 but I have to knock one off. I know you make some compromises on a tripod this small/light, and believe me it's the best for that, but the panning feature on the head is quite clunky. You rotate the entire top head as one piece to telescope it up or down and there is no way to physically lock it in place, so if you do any kind of movement/rotation with your camera even with the ball head loosened you can easily unlock the telescoping mechanism of the head. It would be much better if you could lock it in place with a little switch or button, or if the mechanism to extend it was at the base near the legs rather than up in the head.
