Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Overview

  • 1Description

Sigma looked to create a peak portrait prime with the 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens, and they delivered an optic with high performance, a large f/1.4 aperture, and a variety of technologies. Available here with a Canon EF mount, this lens offers a super-fast f/1.4 aperture that is great for getting images with an exceptionally shallow depth of field and smooth bokeh. It also uses two SLD elements, one anomalous partial dispersion/high-refractive index element, and one aspherical element that minimize aberrations and ensures a crisp, clear image. A Super Multi-Layer coating helps by suppressing flare and ghosting.

For operation, a Hyper Sonic AF motor provides fast, accurate focusing and a large focusing ring permits manual focus override for making fine adjustments. A rounded 9-blade diaphragm also helps create round, smooth bokeh. It is made from a thermally-stable composite material that is light and durable and it has a brass bayonet mount. Additionally, it is fully compatible with Sigma's USB Dock.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
This short telephoto 85mm f/1.4 prime lens is designed for full-frame format Canon EF-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Two SLD elements, one element with a high rate of anomalous partial dispersion and a high index of refraction, and one aspherical element have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps to control distortion and limit vignetting.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Reviews

85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 135.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Possibly Best Lens I've Ever UsedAnd I've Used Everything This lens has been perfect in almost every way. I had high expectations and it's exceeded them. I am a fashion photographer and I've owned the 85/1.4g from Nikon for years. I used to use it a lot on outdoor shoots, but I stopped after a while because the chromatic aberration was just too hard to deal with in post. I have to say, this has NOT been a problem with this lens. It's better than the Nikon in almost ever way, including focus. It hunts less. I received it perfectly calibrated and the sharpness is amazing. There is a small amount of CA wide open, but small and easily controlled in post. I'm a huge, huge fan of this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes and Yes I needed a lens (prime) that would be my major workhorse for portraits. I have a few sigmas which I highly recommend like the 35mm ART. Not such a fan of the zooms. I had a few sigma zooms, not impressed with the sharpness, which is something to be expected but still. I tend to be a prime person. But it has one major weakness (thus the 4 start rating). Mine was front focusing quite a bit at all ranges. Luckily I had the Sigma USB dock and was able to fine tune it. With this lens finetuned, the sky is the limit. It quickly became one of my favorites of all and likely will fuse to my Nikon D750 body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT LENS!! SO far I am LOVING this lens!!! I haven't played around with it too much as of yet but I own the Sigma 35Art and its definitely one of my favorite lenses that I use all the time for all different types of photo I have no doubt that this lens will also become one of my favorites!! It produces a clean, sharp image and also a nice depth of field. The focus on it is excellent as well. The only down side to this lens is that it is a bigger lens and heavy as well. It is definitely a lot bigger in size than the Canon 85mm. The up side is that it is a great lens for the money!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sigma 85 F1.4 I recently purchased this Sigma lens along with two others, the 20 1.4 and the 35 1.4. All three lenses front focused, the 20mm was so extreme, it could not be corrected within the +-20 range of my Nikon. It was replaced by Sigma. The other two lenses both required varying degrees of fine focus corrections with the Sigma USB Dock. Once you get them corrected they are very sharp, but for a lens in this price range I expected much better quality control - these lenses have significant variation in focus, it they are all calibrated at the factory to the same standard, one can only assume they don't hold their calibration and must be constantly tested. They should include the USB Dock at no cost as well as a focus target.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Is A Truly Great Lens I already have three great ART lenses and this one did not disappoint. It is very sharp wide-open on my Canon 5DSR's. I think the best thing about this lens is that it is not only sharp in the center, but sharp out to the edges. This means that you can shoot portraits using the rule-of-thirds or Golden Ratio and have sharp shots. A surprise was in how well it works on my Sony A7RII's with the MC-11. All focus points work well in relatively low light and even the Eye Focus works well. As a note, I was pleasantly surprised to find that no calibration offsets were required on either of my 5DSR's when checked agains my LensCal target. I had set aside several hours to dial the lens in with the Sigma Dock, but didn't need to do so. I was thrilled since that process can be a bit arduous. I will say that it is a beast of a lens in terms of size and weight, so it will not be the best lens for travel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My absolute favorite lens! This lens was by no means a necessity, much more of a luxury treat your self purchase (and really, I need a macro more than I needed this lens), but after seeing it at work with another photographer I decided I must have it! Such a beautiful lens! Tack sharp out of the box (shot with it last night and could see individual arm hairs and goose bumps on the models arm), fast focus, and produces beautiful bokeh, and beautiful images. It is a big lens, but that doesn't bother me (yet, I haven't used it for long periods of time though). My only complaint and I use that term lightly is that the lens cap comes off easily. This isn't a huge issue as it's always kept safely in my bag, but I do worry a little about it getting scratched. May just be my cap though. This is definitely a beautiful lens and I can't wait to use her for sessions!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The results make up for the size & weight! This lens is an absolute beast - in more ways than one! I use a Canon 5d Mark IV. First off, this lens is huge! For an 85, and being able to compare it to the Canon 85mm f1.8 and the Canon 85mm f1.4, this thing is still huge and heavy. However, this thing is also tack sharp! I am constantly finding myself using this lens even if I have to be a bit further away from my subject than I am wanting to. The color, contrast, and light is just amazing. Plus, the sharpness wide open, at f1.4, is just incredible! I get sharper images with this lens wide open than I do with my Canon lenses that are stopped down. Which means, I get a tack sharp image with amazing bokeh! Unless you're someone who can't support a lot of weight for a lens, this is a win-win lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely sharp lens with fast and accurate focus I have around 10 lenses in my collection, mostly Canon L lenses, this one is by FAR the sharpest! Handheld, with autofocus and without focus peaking (why, Canon, why?) portraits resolve each individual eyelash more often than not. Its autofocus is fast and silent, I haven't seen it focus-hunt yet. F1.4 lets you shoot in most everyday conditions without having to use flash, except to fill shadows. The one drawback is it's heavy - close to my Canon 70-200 f2.8L in weight.

Does this lens fit on the canon t6s?
    Asked by: Johnny L.
Yes. Since the T6S is a crop sensor camera, this lens would give you the field of view comparable to a 135mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Will this work for video with a camera that doesn't have image stabilization either? I'm worried about the micro-jitters. Telephoto lenses tend to pronounce vibrations. I'm always on a monopod, tripod, or gimbal for reference.

    Yes it will.

Would this lens fit canon rebel T5?
    Asked by: Alexander
Yes it will fit on the Canon T5. With the crop factor (1.6) this would equal a 135mm lens on a full frame camera.
