Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Overview

Sigma looked to create a peak portrait prime with the 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens, and they delivered an optic with high performance, a large f/1.4 aperture, and a variety of technologies. Available here with a Canon EF mount, this lens offers a super-fast f/1.4 aperture that is great for getting images with an exceptionally shallow depth of field and smooth bokeh. It also uses two SLD elements, one anomalous partial dispersion/high-refractive index element, and one aspherical element that minimize aberrations and ensures a crisp, clear image. A Super Multi-Layer coating helps by suppressing flare and ghosting.

For operation, a Hyper Sonic AF motor provides fast, accurate focusing and a large focusing ring permits manual focus override for making fine adjustments. A rounded 9-blade diaphragm also helps create round, smooth bokeh. It is made from a thermally-stable composite material that is light and durable and it has a brass bayonet mount. Additionally, it is fully compatible with Sigma's USB Dock.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
This short telephoto 85mm f/1.4 prime lens is designed for full-frame format Canon EF-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Two SLD elements, one element with a high rate of anomalous partial dispersion and a high index of refraction, and one aspherical element have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps to control distortion and limit vignetting.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Working pro, shooting advertising for 38 years. Having read many great reviews from DXO Labs and others, I finally bought this highly-rated 85mm 1.4 ART Lens 'on sale' from B&H in late May '21. It arrived looking beautiful, but AF back-focused by 2+ inches on my Canon 5D IV at all distances, 36"-20' (tested w/ LensAlignPro Focus calibrator). Returned it to B&H for exchange in early June for a 2nd 85mm ART copy. Same exact back-focusing issue. Called Sigma USA Tech Support, they sent me a free calibration Dock. Did not work with my Mac's OS so I exchanged that 2nd 85mm ART copy for a 3rd ART copy. Same exact back-focusing issue. Called Sigma Tech again. They wouldn't pay my inbound shipping cost ($105 insured, w/ my 5D IV body), but they did fix the lens this last week of July. I've tested it rigorously using LensAlignPro, and it's now a winner. But after eating up my "Sale Price" reduction and wasting 3 months of my time, it was NO bargain. Beware of the very poor factory quality control currently being experienced with Sigma ART lenses!!

Lens works great. I didn't realize that this only works for a certain depth however, so I can't use it for what I originally purchased it for. I bought a macro lens kit to adapt this so that I can take fine detailed photos.

Absolutely love this lens. The clarity is great. A little heavy but worth it for the look it gives.

Phenomenal Portrait Lens

I recently got this lens in the hopes of using it for portraits and as a second shooter at weddings, after reading through plenty of reviews that led me to it. And it has been absolutely amazing. Doing just one second shooter shoot and a fun shoot of a friend of mine who modeled for a local clothing boutique, it has been everything I've wanted.

The Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 DG HSM that I have, has (I believe) a course thread. Does anyone know of a good adapter that can convert the course thread to standard?
Asked by: Benjamin
Thanks Kirk. For anyone else interested. After further research I can confirm this lens DOES indeed have an 86mm filter thread with a 1mm pitch, and course thread to standard thread adapters/ couplers apprently just do not exist. Which is a problem for people like me who are using it for video purposes. So in order to attach a matte box adapter ring to this lens I have contacted Smallrig/ DreamRig to custom make it for this lens which should be available to others in the same situation as I am.

question

Does this lens fit on the canon t6s?
Asked by: Johnny L.
Yes. Since the T6S is a crop sensor camera, this lens would give you the field of view comparable to a 135mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Will this work for video with a camera that doesn't have image stabilization either? I'm worried about the micro-jitters. Telephoto lenses tend to pronounce vibrations. I'm always on a monopod, tripod, or gimbal for reference.
Asked by: Garrick
Yes it will.
